Jason Heyward will be the Atlanta Braves Opening Day Right Fielder

From an Tweet by AJC beat writer Carroll Rogers:

Cox announced today that Jason Heyward has made the team and will be Braves opening day right fielder.

There you have it! Financial considerations be damned, and for good reason, Heyward is the best option for the Braves in right field. Congratulation to Jay-Hey... let the new era of Braves baseball begin.

UPDATE 12:45pm

According to the Braves twitter feed, Heyward will wear uniform number 22.

Diory Hernandez is going on the DL, to clear a spot for Heyward. I think CB (sorry of it was someone else) had a post about it a while back

by eaheckman10 on Mar 26, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Has Diory been DL’d yet? If it hasn’t happened yet, I don’t see it happening soon.

CBs post was speculative (not that it was bad or anything – it was a great read), but he was making the point that IF Diory got DL’d it could be a really good thing for Atlanta.

Very excited to see him out there from Opening Day forward but would like to have that extra year two weeks in Gwinnett would have bought us.

by blairblink on Mar 26, 2010 10:47 AM EDT reply actions

What would it matter if he signs a long-term deal before he’s eligible for arbitration? I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sign a long-term deal before the end of this season. Use Longoria’s contract as an example.

And by the time that happens, we’ll be done with Chipper and Lowe’s contracts, which frees up $30 million right there. Plus count in Billy Wagner and Saito and there is another $10+ million gone. Now I know others will have received raises, etc. But we’ll have the money for him.

I’m all for this move, regardless of any financial implications.

by dunnytwogloves on Mar 26, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

it matters in terms of bargaining power…Heyward’s FA will start in 2015 opposed to 2016 now…most players only sign long term deals through thier arb years…well we just lost one year of control…so even if he signs that dela through arbitration (which is more than likely going to happen, it seems) we still have him fro one less year.

Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

by fatazfoot on Jan 7, 2009 8:59 PM EST

by Swo12bv on Mar 26, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

The bargaining position isn't that much different.

It is just that he would be bargaining on a free agent year instead of a fourth arbitration year, and there just isn’t that much difference there. If we had held him down for two months, it would have made a difference, but not two weeks.

by cavebird on Mar 26, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

That is IF he walks as a free agent...

for all you know, he’s another Chipper, McCann, etc about to spend his entire career with a tomahawk on his chest.

Wouldn't "the worse"...

be Nick Adenhart, at which point he never reaches free agency (cold, I know)? Basically, worse is he busts like French, or suffers a debilitating injury early in his career, at which point service time means nothing.

by Mr. Sanchez on Mar 26, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

This

In fact, I think this show of good faith on the Braves part could be part of the negotiations:

FW: “Jase, we don’t want to screw around, whadya say we buy out your arb years and go $50m/12. We’re not trying to screw you, after all we could have held you down until June but didn’t.”

JH: “Hmm…good point. Eric, what do you think?”

EH: “Never turn down your first million.”

Although maybe I’m just living in denial.

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

they NEVER "ignore" financial elements

Baseball-wise, it’s an obvious choice.

Wren et al must have also concluded that financially they gain more from having him in big boy pants (i.e., ticket sales, significant boost to win pctg, etc.) than whatever they would gain from contract timing games.

Bobby put his foot down!

He said, “If this is going to be my last year, give me the horses to win it all!”

Love it!

Hopefully he can put his other foot down in August and get a CF like Grady Sizemore! LOL

What about Jordan Schafer?

I think Freddie Freeman is a perfect example of how a busted wrist can really stop your development.

Give the kid time.

Jason Heyward and Josh Smith are justifiying my decision to go to school in Atlanta only for the Braves and Hawks.

Hey Everyone...

Turn on ESPN. ZOMG! They’re actually gonna talk about us and Jason Heyward! But I thought baseball wasn’t played outside of the northeast??? Weird.

I’m not exactly sure when it’ll come on, but probably after their ARod segment.

I don’t know where the clicker is, but the remote is probably in between the cushions of your couch.

Bad call. No one will remember the first two weeks of this season in 6 years when Heyward is signing his monster deal with the Yankees. When we could have had him for another year.

no. no. no.

in 3 seasons, Chipper’s, Huddy’s, DLowe’s, KK’s, Wagner’s and McLouth’s contracts will be off the books. Just adding it up in my head…that’s about $55-$60MM.

We’ll have money to pay him. There’s no doubt about it.

by Scott Coleman on Mar 26, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Chipper, DLowe, and Wagner will both be retired by then. I can potentially see Huddy still being there but that’s all from that list.

This will work out.

by musicman on Mar 26, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Theres a reason we haven’t dished out bigger offers lately. We have to lock up Hanson, JHey, maybe JJ. Esco and Prado are hitting arb soon. The kid is a Brave.

Dude, Heyward would never even consider signing long term with the Braves. You’re just as stoopid as Wren and Cox, and everyone knows they are complete moranes.

by fandave on Mar 26, 2010 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

and Frank Wren is a Yankees fan too cause he didn’t trade DLowe and traded out BEST PITCHER Javier Vasguez for Melky Cabrera and 2 other guys!!

I’m excited… but in all seriousness, is anyone concerned with his recent “slump”?

I know. What happens if he has an 0-8 slump during the year and he gets booed out of town….. this might be a big mistake.

I’m not. Maybe if it strings to 0-20 or so (which it won’t, because he got a hit already today), but 0-10s happen with regularity.

People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

This just in....

In light of the announcement of Jason Heyward as the Braves starting right-fielder, every other team in Major League Baseball has decided to forfeit the next 15 seasons, accepting the fact that there is really no point in trying to compete with perfection.
