Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

August 9, 1989

This is my first Talking Chop post, although I've been an avid reader for a while now.  I was perusing www.mattwietersfacts.com, and noticed all of them applied to our own wunderkind, Jason Heyward.  Someone on that site even took the time to research the Orioles game played on Wieters' birthday, and noted the stats for the Orioles catcher that day, so I decided to do the same.

Heyward was born on August 9, 1989.  On this day, the Braves  were playing the final game of a three game series with the Dodgers.  Pete Smith was the starter for the Braves, while John Wetteland took the mound for the Dodgers.  The Braves right fielder was Dale Murphy, of course.  In this game, Murphy went 2 for 4 with two homers and 5 RBI, beating the Dodgers almost single-handedly.  Atlanta won 6-3.

This may be a bit of useless information, but 1989 was arguably the worst season of Murphy's career up to that point.  Fitting that one of his best games of the season came on the day that the phenom, Jason Heyward, came into this world.  After watching him today, I have no doubt that JayHey could go down along with Murphy as one of the greatest ever to wear a Braves uniform.

I understand that feeling

The first time I remember watching the Braves play was on TV in 1981. If I remember correctly Bob Horner and Chris Chambliss homered, and Gaylord Perry was pitching. The RF I believe was Claudell Washington at the time.

Man I am getting old.

First Braves game I went to was in 1988...

…and I was 7 But I saw Dale Murphy hit a home run, and saw John Smoltz pitch (for a loss, but whatever). I’d never heard of this “Smoltz” guy before, but going to the park to see Dale Murphy was enough for me.

I hope that one day, Jason Heyward is even better than Dale Murphy. The Murph should be in the Hall Of Fame, so why not wish a better career on Heyward?

I didn’t even know what baseball was until the late eighties, and became a Braves fan because they were always on TBS… I only got to see the twilight of Murphy’s career. but I understand how people thought he was great. Atlanta has been a bastion of strong RFers, from Aaron to Murphy, so hopefully JayHey is next in that group.

Nice work

reminds me of Mark Ellis eclipsing Dick Green last year in the A’s record books for HR by a 2B. Both were are from Rapid City, South Dakota, population: 60,000. Eerie…

It was more of a dammit at the indescribable awesome

Now we just have to wait for someone to post the link to the Jermaine Dupri Braves commercial and we shall be set for our decade-old hip-hop tinged Braves nostalgia. You know Soulja Boy is gonna write a song if when we win the World Series this year… and in 2020 it will be just that much more amazing to re-watch.

First game

When I was a kid, my dad brought me to see the Mets/Braves doubleheader in July of 86. We were supposed to get creamed as we were really bad but obviously the Mets weren’t. We won both games. Looking back, it’s funny because the losing pitcher in the first game was none other than Roger McDowell.

Been a fan ever since…

I wish I could remember...

my first Braves game, but the years are creeping up on me. We moved to ATL in 1975, I was 12 and I did get to see the first half of many Braves games (my dad was famous for wanting to leave early to beat traffic). But one of my favorite memories was June 16, 1978. I was working at the little league field keeping score and working the scoreboard for games. My mom came to pick me up in our AMC Pacer. I got into the car and she had the game on WSB. She told me the score and this guy I had never heard of was coming to the plate. He crushed a home run and I was officially introduced to a very young Bob Horner.

I miss the old days of WTCG Channel 17. Does anyone remember when Ted put nicknames on the back of jerseys and on the back of Andy Messersmith’s # 17 jersey Ted put “Channel”. The Commish yanked that pretty quick, but I thought it was hilarious!

really?

Im too young to remember that. I heard that story before and thought it was a joke. But while we are on the subject, the first game I ever went to was in ’97, and I was 7 years old. The Braves were facing the Cardinals who had recently aquired McGwire. Danny Bautista hit a walk off home run to win the game for the Braves.

by Shoert on Mar 4, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

I remember that

I was a big McGwire fan as a kid, and I was excited to see him… Bautista pinch hit for Klesko, who was another one of my favorites. I was ticked, until he hit a homer.

I was at that game with my dad!

I’d never heard a stadium louder than that when that ball went over the fence. Awesome.

ha no way I was there too

with my dad and uncles from Michigan. I was also 7, strangely enough.

the first games i saw were those of the Twins/Braves WS….

End of comment.

Pujols is NOT God.... sure he'll hit .350, hit 50 bombs, and drive in a 125....but then again...so will Heyward..

Early 70’s. Gibson pitched, Lou Brock stole a base. Long drive back to Tenn after a loss and no I-75.

Final 2 games of 1973 season...

I was turning 7 and my Dad brought us up for the final 2 games of the 1973 season.

On Saturday night, Hank Aaron hit home run #713.

As I like to say, I saw the last home run of Hank’s that didn’t set any records!

BUT… that home run also gave the Braves THREE guys on the team with 40 or more HR’s (Davey Johnson and Darrell Evans and Hank)… so it set a record that had never before been accomplished in MLB!

Sunday was a HUGE day in that Hank could have TIED and BROKEN the Babe’s record…but he didn’t.

But I still give my Dad credit for making me a Braves fan that weekend and for giving me a CHANCE to see history!!

awesome! Oddly enough several of us went to our first game when we were 7. I am too young to remember Hank but I love the footage of him breaking the Babe’s record.
