Spring Training Open Thread: Braves at Muts

I'm going to put this up a little early in anticipation of today's game (provided, of course, that the weather cooperates).

I got the following note last night from the Media Relations manager at the MLB Network:

FYI, the blackout has been lifted in the Atlanta Braves' television market for MLB Network's simulcast of the Braves at Mets Spring Training game live on Tuesday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m. ET. MLB Network will carry SportsNet New York's call of the game.

I had no idea there was going to be a blackout, but if you were worried about that, unworry yourself. The unfortunate part is that we'll have to listen to Mets announcers. Of course, being that there's not too many good things to say about the Mets, they may end up bashing the team more than a Braves announcer would.

Here is the expected Braves lineup:

Nate McLouth, CF
Martin Prado, 2B
Jason Heyward, RF
Brian McCann, C
Yunel Escobar, SS
Melky Cabrera, LF
Eric Hinske, 1B
Omar Infante, 3B
Mitch Jones, DH

Tommy Hanson on the mound first, followed by Jesse Chavez, Michael Dunn, Chris Resop, James Parr, and Manny Acosta.

Chipper, Glaus, and Diaz did not make the trip.

I predict the Braves will cruise early then lose the game in the ninth when Manny Acosta "does his thing."

I'd agree...

not counting, no prizes, just to get things going and work off some rust, like the players are doing this spring.

Score
Player of the Game (this would be hard with limited time in spring, so maybe make two miscellaneous cats like First run/hit and last starter in the lineup)

Do you not remember the last time miscellaneous cats were used in NAHWAL? Somebody forgot to feed them, and somehow bigjoe ended up with his own blog.

FYI

For anyone who has DISH and doesn’t get MLB network, you can send a letter to DISH requesting they add the channel. Just go to MLB network’s website, and enter your zip code in “channel locator”, and there will be an option under DISH to send a letter to them. Who knows if it will do any good, but its worth a try.

The FCC mandates that all apartment complexes mom’s basements allow tenants to install satellite dishes as long as they have a balcony/patio or an exclusive use area. Seriously, look it up.

High School Flashback

Jesse Chavez, Abe Alvarez (ex-Red Sox farmhand) and I played for Miller High School in California and we used to dominate Tommy Hanson back in the day! Ironic how things work out.

Oddly enough, the best pitcher in our league back then was Ricky Nolasco. He was just plain filthy.

Good: Heyward. We scored a run

Bad: Chavez, and we resumed our LOBs

"Batting second and playing shortstop-he's Cuban. Yeah, his name's Pablo...no, eh, Yunel Escobar, sorry"

by GoBravesNY on Mar 2, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

GOOD: Heyward is a beast at the plate, he blistered a single past 1st and was pitched around the next 2 times up, and he stole 3rd. Hanson had 2 IP, 1 hit, 3 k’s.

BAD: Mitch Jones swing has major holes. Chavez got lit up. Too many LOB’s. McLouth and Esco looked bad at the plate as well.

- I miss Spooneybarger :(

by Mighty Healthy on Mar 2, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Heyward battled back from 1-2 in first AB to get a walk. 2nd AB hits a rocket single down the line. 3rd AB gets a walk.

Also he stole 3B.

Hanson did well. Got i believe 4 K’s in 2 innings. Medlen did well also.

Chavez was terrible.

Mitch Jones has a terrible swing

Adios guys and gals

its been fun.

Omar Minaya is my hero!

What would happen...

if Resop ever pitched to Heyward?

I’m pretty sure they’d have to invent the 9-run home run for that matchup.

Mets win

4-2

All that matters is Heyward dominated

by drumzalicious on Mar 2, 2010 3:47 PM EST reply actions

I hate to lose,

especially to the Mutts.

When asked what aspects of Heyward’s game need improvement, one scout simply replied, "Nothing."

Let them have this...

It’ll probably be the highlight of their season.

I watched the first 3 innings and the last 2

I had class in the middle innings, did Chavez look bad or what happened?

by JKowalek on Mar 2, 2010 3:49 PM EST reply actions

Yes, very much so.

I've never really seen him pitch before.

Either way I want to see Hyde up there for the season. I think DOB said Friday for him right?

by JKowalek on Mar 2, 2010 3:52 PM EST reply actions

I was a little disappointed with Heyward's debut

he’s OPSing less than 4.000

The third-base umpire ran into the outfield and retrieved the biggest chunk. "It's a f***in' potato."

by alligatorimpersonator on Mar 2, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Yeah

He really didn’t seem himself today, maybe tomorrow he’ll pick it up….

by JKowalek on Mar 2, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

I'd like to see some more hustle, honestly.
