Spring Training Open Thread: Braves at Marlins

Another televised game today as the Braves take an over-nighter and travel to Jupiter for the Marlins today and then the Cards tomorrow. I'm scheduling this post the night before as I will likely be at the Braves minor league camp all morning. The game is once again on Fox Sports South at 1:05pm.

Here are the pitchers scheduled to throw; Tommy Hanson, followed by four guys competing heavily for the last bullpen spots, Jesse Chavez, Manny Acosta, Michael Dunn, and Mariano Gomez.

If you're going to either of those two games (or any Braves game for that matter) make sure you take a picture and submit your own View From Your Seat.

Good Spring so far

I like what the starters have been doing both on the pitching and offensive sides… I cringe at some of these bullpen outings, but its still early… Especially whenthe starters are throwing a heavy diet of fastballs and guys start to catch up once the bullpen comes in

The best thing about this spring not named Jason Heyward...

Kris Medlen. He is looking very good so far.

Intriguing, but I dunno that he’s got the demeanor of a typical Braves player… and the best he could do is challenge for a bench spot — that might not go well with him.

Some Spring stats thus far...

BB: Braves as a team: 82 walks. First in majors; second is RedSox at 58.
OBP: Braves first at .404. DBacks second with .385.
AVG: DBacks at .322; Braves 8th at .294.
K: Braves 11th best at 79, but every team better has played fewer games than ATL’s 14. Braves are the only team with fewer K’s than BB’s. Phillies (12 games) have 70, which is second to the Dodgers (10 games; Taiwan didn’t count).

Pitching:
ERA: Braves (9-5) third at 3.85 (Phils, 7-4, 3.36)
K’s: Braves 5th, essentially even with top teams that have played more games.
BB’s: Braves 10th, again very comparable to best teams playing fewer games.
WHIP: 8th at 1.40 (indians 1.20; Phils 1.23).

Oh, by the way: That ‘Best Rotation in Baseball’, the Angels, have 26th best WHIP and 25th best ERA thus far. Just sayin’, Mr. Heyman.

Does any one know a good source explaining how, for example, we could keep Heyward longer if he comes up later in the season?

by Gage23 on Mar 17, 2010 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

If Heyward stays down for a few weeks, his major league service time isn’t a full year, and major league service time is how they determine when you are eligible for free agency and arbitration. If Heyward stays down for about 3 weeks, his free agency is delayed 1 year. The Rays did this with Evan Longoria. If he stays down for about 2 months, his arbitration is delayed 1 year.

by eaheckman10 on Mar 17, 2010 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

So how long do we have him before he is a free agent? How many full years?

by Gage23 on Mar 17, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

also, when is the date after which he can enter the season and it not count against his service time?

by thenightstallion on Mar 17, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Chipper

Doesn’t care about the Braves 6 years from now, when we could have Heyward for a huge bargain if we just send to Gwinnett for 3 weeks. 3 weeks! 60 ABs of Heyward now for 600 ABs of 26 y/o Heyward. No question in my mind what the right move is.

by Shark Judge on Mar 17, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

You are incorrect.

The three weeks sending him down would only mean the difference between Heyward being a fourth year arbitration player and a free agent in six years. The difference in third year arbitration and free agent salaries is generally small, the third year arbitration players usually get about 80% of market value. Fouth year arbitration players are naturally a little bit higher. This means, that the “bargain” we would get in six years for those three weeks does not amount to much. Remember that we can always keep him indefinitely if we are willing to pay the market rate—-the question isn’t a different between 60 ABs and a full year of Heyward, it is whether we are cheap enough that we are worried about a couple of million dollars six years from now.

by cavebird on Mar 17, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

True

I got my dates mixed up. And I don’t actually think we should keep him down till June to avoid Super 2 status. He’s too good right now for that.

Thanks for the correction.

by Shark Judge on Mar 17, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

that's not what he's saying...

He’s saying he will be eligible for arbitration for that year and the year before anyway.

by alligatorimpersonator on Mar 17, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

A player may not become a free agent until after 6 full years of service (unless the team simply doesn’t offer him a contract/arbitration during his first 6 years).

A player is recognized as having a year of service at 172 days, if he has fewer days of service he is not credited with a year of service, thus delaying their free agency by a year.

Hanson has been sharp – Marlins haven’t been able to put anything together. Their run was a single, sacrifice, single. Since then it’s really been a shutdown, pretty much. No walks.

Andrew Miller could have had a better fate, but gave up walks and ill-timed hits, especially in the 3rd inning (double by McCann cleared the bases for 3 RBI). Hensley has shutdown the Braves since then… and is still in, I believe.

Cheers, all.
