John Smoltz Finds A Job

John Smoltz will once again be joining the Braves... but this time it will be in the broadcast booth. It was just announced that he will join TBS as an analyst, working TBS Sunday MLB games. He will also serve as the analyst for games on Peachtree TV, partnering with Joe Simpson.

It's great to have John back in the Braves fold, even if it is only as broadcaster. This also looks to unofficially end his 21-year Major League career, though no official retirement announcement has been made.

As a contributor to Fox Sports South, who is broadcasting the first of two consecutive spring training games today, I can't help but notice the timing of this announcement from rival station TBS. Just a bit of one-upmanship.

And who knows

Injuries in the bullpen and we may need to put him back in uniform

I'll put you through hell, but at the end of it all we'll be champions.

Awesome for Smoltz! He seems like a natural talking about the game.

Hopefully he’s just doing this till the pitching coach job is available. Smoltz belongs in the Braves dugout.

So, what's the lineup for the Braves?

I’m thinking:

SportsSouth & FSS — Chip Carey play-by-play
                                          Joe Simpson color

Peachtree — Joe Simpson play-by-play
                       John Smoltz color

Add Tom Glavine into the FSS mix as a part-timer, and Brian Jordan may still do some Peachtree TV games.

It would be awesome if after getting plenty of experience we see Smoltzy and Glav covering a game together.

by Fischerking on Mar 16, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be amazing.

Especially with Smoltzie as the color guy.

What about Brian Jordan?

Thats great thought, I’m happy for Smoltz.

I don’t think Brian has ever been comfortable in front of the camera.

…what about Brian Jordan? The dude’s a really nice guy, but he is far from being a good analyst or color commentator.

by djvog on Mar 16, 2010 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully, he uses his first 30 seconds to apologize. After that, I welcome him with open arms. Perhaps the only thing that John does better than getting outs is broadcasting and commenting on the game.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who holds a little grudge against him.

Glad to have him. Would’ve liked to have seen him come back this year as a reliever if he was able.

Interesting

that neither he nor Glav have really used the “r” word in admitting that their playing careers are (likely) over.

I know nothing about his comfortability and fluidity in front of the camera, but he has a great, resonant baritone that should serve him well. I hope he’s a success in the booth.

Count me as super excited for this

Welcome back John

I’ve missed him. Feels real good to have him back.

The future has come...in the form of Jason Heyward.

I'm super excited to have Smoltz back with us,

he’s a natural in front of the camera, unlike Brian Jordan.

When asked what aspects of Heyward’s game need improvement, one scout simply replied, "Nothing."

this is great news for any Braves fan. Glad things got patched up & Smoltzie & Glav are back in the fold. The ST game today was great. This team seems to be carrying itself with a little swagger that I didn’t notice last year. Not cockiness. Just confidence. Wags was great in his inning of pitching hitting triple digits on a fastball. Either the radar gun was off or Wags pulled one out of his hat. I’ll take the latter. Glaus & Chipper looking solid. The team overall showing patience at the plate. And Jason being Jason. Not to mention Moylan & his new change up friend “Dave”. I’m feeling good about this team & this year. Go Bravos.

really didn't expect this so soon

seems too good to be true from a PR standpoint

If he pitches this year, I can’t see it being with anyone but us:

Sept. Bullpen:

Wagner
Saito
Smoltz
Moylan (ROOGY)
EOF (LOOGY)
Medlen
Proctor (With Kimbrel Maybe ready)

Count me in as another who's very happy glad about this.

I’m gonna love hearing a familiar voice and unique perspective only he and Glavine will be able to bring to the games. In my heart, they’ll always be Braves to me.

Welcome back, Johnny

Good to see that there’s no hard feelings from the messy divorce. Here’s a full rundown of the next John Smoltz, Sports Casualties’ main man Craig Kimbrel.

(Ok, so maybe not the next Smoltz.) Enjoy.
