Very Interesting

He’s getting a prolonged look, can’t imagine they’d stick him on the bench to start the year as it’d be better if he could play everyday in AAA, but a great sign

I have a question...

This is off topic but for fantasy reasons I’m wondering what the word is on Jason Heyward. I hear he is a beast but do you think he will 1) Make the team 2) be a bench guy 3) become a starter? Sorry I don’t know much about him. I’m actually an Astros fan….Yes, I know they are terrible :) Thanks for the help and good luck this season.

If he makes the team he will be starting and all signs point to him making the team so far in ST. He may be spelled on occation against tough lefties by some combo of Diaz or Melky, but I get the feeling he will see over 500 PA this year.

Not a viable option

I wouldn’t draft him unless you want to get him with a last round pick and hope he’s the ROY. He’s probably only going to be a 1 category fantasy player (BA). I doubt he plays every day. I doubt he cracks 15 HRs, 50 RBI or 8 SBs. Worst-case scenario is he struggles early on a la Schafer and gets sent down to Gwinett. I know that someone in my draft this Sunday will draft him cuz we’re all Braves fans, but I won’t.

And I completely hope that I’m 100% wrong.

Lets all hope he doesn’t injure his wrist in the first game of the season. I know i couldn’t hit .280-.300 one handed.

Jason Heyward can hit .300 with one broken wrist and the other hand tied behind his back.

by J-Freak on Mar 16, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for the info guys. I could just leave him as a FA and try and be one of the first to pick him up if he catches fire. He’s on my radar.

by wescox10 on Mar 16, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Fatvirus, there is one implausible scenario there.

If he is up, he will play more or less every day. The Braves have already said that (that he’ll be playing more or less every day either in Atlanta or Gwinnett) and honestly, to do anything is would be horribly dumb. You don’t stunt a 20 yr. old stud prospect’s development by making him a bench player. Either you have a spot and you play him or you send him down and play him there. If he plays fulltime the full season, he’ll certainly crack 50 RBI and have a good number of runs, too, due to the OBP. The HR’s are a tricky question because he is more or a line drive hitter than a HR hitter, but he’s so strong, I think he would get 20 in a full season. As for the steals, we all know Bobby doesn’t run, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that number is low.

i know, A LOT, but everyone wanted him and it was at 10$ so i went to 12$.

I know, a bit dumb, but for 3 years i’ll have him for 18$ per and while that’s A LOT now, in 2012 it will be a STEAL.

Freddie Freeman could do it. I don’t think we’ll spend much next offseason because, well, we won’t have much money to spend. However, once KK’s contract is up after 2011 along DLowe’s and Chipper’s in 2012, I imagine we would add a big time free agent.

5 starters, 7 relievers

Locks: Hudson, Hanson, Lowe, JJ, KK (starting rotation)
Wagner
Saito
Moylan
O’Flaherty
Medlen

2 spots open by my count-another LOOGY is desirable.

by Bronn on Mar 16, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, the locks are:

Wagner
Saito
EOF
Moylan
Medlen (I don’t see how we couldn’t keep him after the spring he’s had)

So…2 spots. My money is on Chavez and Reyes, with Proctor coming up in May and (hopefully) Kimbrel in June.

anyone think

that if the team doesnt find a good internal option for a 2nd LOOGY that we’ll sign someone like Mahay or Beimel?

I mean I would like Dunn to make the team but he hasnt been to impressive. same for Reyes who has shown he isnt dependable in the bigs

by drumzalicious on Mar 16, 2010 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

only on a minor league contract, but every other team in baseball would take them too. LOOGYs are so damn inconsistent. Ohman was great for us in 08 and he was horrible/injured all of 09.

And I’ve also heard Beimel is a douchebag to fans and in the clubhouse, so I’m not too interested.

by mvhsbball on Mar 16, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think so

If we don’t have another worthwhile lefty, we’ll just send Dunn to the minors and go with one LOOGY. Wags is a lefty, so he could used situationally if the 8th inning looks to be full of tough lefties and the 9th would be bottom of the line-up guys.

Dunn would get time to work on stuff in the minors and we might bring him back up later.

From what I’ve read scrolling through this, he was up in the zone in the 1st and then got better in the 2nd and 3rd and had a good changeup working.

How did he give up the 3? Any walks involved? Any HRs? Or just a bunch of hits?
