"Jeffery Loria, owner of the Marlins, has almost flat-out said that if the Marlins don't go to playoffs this season, manger Fredi Gonzalez will be fired."

What did people think of him during his time in Atlanta? He had one year as manager in Richmond when it was still our AAA club, and another 4 as 3B coach, so he knows our ways and how Bobby handled things. He's been heading up the Marlins for 3 yearas now, 2 ended with a winning record despite the constant penny pinching and revolving door of young players. If he was available, I'd love to bring back Gonzalez. Where would you put him in the pecking order of hopeful managers next year, as I might put him at the top of the list.

Interesting

Gonzolez would be a good choice. Yost, Pendelton, Perez, Glavine, Chino, Snitker, Wellman, the list will be long. I figure Wren might have somebody from his Baltimore days in mind.

I would love to see Fredi G back in the dugout. He has done an outstanding job with the Marlins.

How can the owner say such things when his team is operating within a budget that AROD laughs at.

They cut Giradi lose after a quality year...

although personality may have effected that decision.

by Mr. Sanchez on Mar 15, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes but....

Girardi really did a number on those starters over there in his tenure. Dontrelle and Scott Olsen have never been the same

I thought hurricane season was over........

by bravesguy311 on Mar 15, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Girardi had nothing to do with Willis’ arm abuse. Girardi had Willis pitch in 223 innings. The season before, he pitched in 236, and before that, he pitched 197.

Olsen only pitched in 180 innings under Girardi.

Yeah, ever since he told the owner to stop heckling the ump, the Marlins FO had it out for him.

I know right? How dare he tell a grown man to act his age and let him do his job. The nerve.

The really sad part is that the Ump had to tell him to shut the owner up. I hope, for that owner’s sake, that he was drunk.

I’d be so freaking happy if Freddi came back to the Braves. He’s an incredibly smart and capable baseball man and just an all around great person.

I would definitely be cool with this. Imagine if he was a head coach for people that weren’t bat shit insane with their roster.

He'd be number one on my list

Whether he was fired or not.. Frank wren should go get him at seasons end. Always pulled for the fish because I liked his coaching, when it didn’t involve the braves, but honestly just always liked him.

If he isn’t at the top of the wishlist yet someone needs to sneak into FW’s office and add him immediately. Go get him Franky!

sounds like a job for 10-4. He’s got connections to FW. Greatly influenced him over the Damon escapade.

I saw that. He was my hero that week.

by J-Freak on Mar 15, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh hell yeah

I’d love to have him. And he’s also great with the hispanic players so Esco, JJ, Marteeen, etc. along with all our young pitchers like JT and Vizcaino would likely benefit as well.

I’m down.

Are there any other Cuban managers?...

I noticed he was from Cuba, and maybe that with our willingness to spend might make it easier to acquire desired players from the island.

Hmmm...

Ozzie Guillen maybe? That’s about the only name I’m coming up with.

Ozzie is Venezuela, not Cuba.

Fredi is ah-mazing.

He’s definitely at the top of my list for replacements.

Yes, Yes, Oh Hell Yeah!

If I was Freddie, I’d leave just based on threatened to be fired if I don’t make the playoffs. That kinda thing would seem to be over his head every year.

by Sparhawk on Mar 15, 2010 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

Fredi would be a good choice.

The Marlins would be insane to fire him. I mean, if they make the playoffs, it’d be just short of a miracle. Hell, winning 87 games with that pitching staff last year was pretty darn miraculous if you ask me.

I know a lot of owners have unrealistic expectations, and no owner is ever going to say that he doesn’t expect to make the playoffs, but Loria is crraaazy if he means that.

Yep, sign me up for the Fredi bandwagon.

by Lizziebeth on Mar 16, 2010 1:45 AM EDT reply actions

I was worried that Bobby would retire and Fredi would still have 1 year left on his contract with the Marlins. If the rumors are true that he’ll be canned if the Fish don’t make the playoffs, that’s great news for the Braves. Wren has shown that he isn’t a homer (see Glavine, Tommy and Smoltz, John), so there’s a decent chance that he wouldn’t be pulling for someone like Pendleton to take the reins. It’s still way too early to realistically think about this as an option. Let’s let Bobby do what he does this year first then figure it out. Hopefully Fredi will still be around in late October when the Braves season finally comes to an end (hopefully).
