Frank Wren Evaluation
I know a lot of us already read CAC (and PJ is a poster here). But I really thought the effort here was nice, analyzing some of Frank's most important moves.

Great read
CAC is one of the few places I actually read when I’m looking for someone else’s thoughts about the Braves. The ideas are always well thought out and researched…beats the crap out of most blogs out there (I’m looking at you, bleacher report)
The third-base umpire ran into the outfield and retrieved the biggest chunk. "It's a f***in' potato."

And we went 86-76 last year.

Nice read.
What exactly is true talent level?
I'm more critical
Jurrjens was a fluke. But a jackpot nonetheless. Delighted with that.
McLouth I still like a lot despite having a forgettable 09. I like Morton but couldn’t bear watching Schaffer struggle anymore. (I love Schaffer too).
Tex? people argue we couldn’t afford him. But we turn right around and shovel $15m, 8.3m, 11m contracts to 3 average pitchers (average at the time – Javy was outstanding and I loved that deal at the time). Tex is a legit cleanup hitter, switch hitter, .300 – 35HR great D, made Chipper much better. I still say he would have signed if we’d offered a tad more. Suffering through Kotchman was embarrasing. 10HR out of a 1B – laughable. Glauss is a lottery ticket but at least we can hope. With Kotchman, you knew what you were going to get and he still managed to surprise to the downside. I’m sick of having the worst 1B in MLB.
Speaking of… $15m a year for 4 years to 36 year old Lowe who has been pitching in LA for years? Simply unforgivable. I can’t imagine there was another offer that was even in the same stratosphere as that disaster.
Kawakami… $8m for this guy? I’d rather have Medlen! I’d rather have Morton!
Last but not least, the disgraceful caving in to old pal Hudson and shu-ing out the outstanding J Vazquez. Prices were similar. We decided to keep the guy who is:
a. not as good (I’d predict JV to go 220 IP, 3.1 ERA. Hudson to go 185 IP [if he’s lucky] and a 4.0 ERA. Be honest with yourself – that’s a fair assessment.
coming off the most major surgery a pitcher can have. This one could be the old Mike Hampton ghost of Christmas past.by nathan rothschild on Mar 15, 2010 4:25 PM EDT reply actions

Tex got 22.5 mil per year…youd have to cut at least two of those pitchers just to sign one player (and then be stuck with a risky 8 year contract). Who are you running to the mound if you have to cut two starting pitchers?

oh
and tommy john surgeries have an incredible success rate..its not unreasonable to be concerned, but you shouldnt expect him to not be able to come back from it.

KK is not $8m...
not close. Try under $7m.
And I’ll bet my house Javy can’t post a sub 3.2 ERA this year.
well
The AL and Yankee Stadium will probably make that statement true…but on the other hand, if he were still with the Braves, he just might do it…

He's actually under 7 million this year.
Last year he was paid 9.667 million (with his signing bonus), and he’s paid 6.667 in each of the next two.

And they'd be wrong...
we aren’t paying average. if we dealt him, it’d cost the new team under 7 each of the next two years. When Wren is calculating pay roll for this year and next, KK goes in as under 7.
LOL So we’re just supposed to forget that he made nearly $10 MM last year because he’s making almost $7 MM this year?
Well, when talking about how much he is getting paid, yes. When talking about how much he got paid, no.
