Going into Spring Training, the Braves had very few open spots on the roster. Our starting rotation is set, which is a much need breath of fresh air compared to previous years. Our bullpen, with the exception of 1 or 2 open spots, is set as well. And while we already know who will likely man the 8 positions on the field (Right Field being the exception) our lineup appears to be very flexible. There are only 1 or 2 spots in the lineup that appear to be set in stone.
I got the idea for this post while looking over at the Red Sox blog, Over The Monster. It seemed to spark a lot of good discussion over there and if it does the same on TC, perhaps this could be a running series until opening day.
On the poll I'll list every player who could possibly hit in that position. Obviously, Troy Glaus won't be hitting leadoff and Chipper won't be hitting 8th. It just wouldn't happen so there's no reason to let those wonderful trolls throw the results off.
Here are the candidates for hitting leadoff, with their respective career and 2009 stats:
Matt Diaz - LF
2009: .313BA .390OBP .878OPS 12SB/5CS
Career: .310BA .358OBP .817OPS 25SB/13BB
Yunel Escobar - SS
2009: .299BA .377OBP .812OPS 5SB/4CS
Career: .301BA .375OBP .801OPS 12SB/12CS
Nate McLouth - CF
2009: .256BA .352OBP .788OPS 12SB/6CS
Career: .260BA .342OBP .796OPS 76SB/11CS
Martin Prado - 2B
2009: .307BA .358OBP .822OPS 1SB/3CS
Career: .307BA .360OBP .810OPS 4SB/4CS
Personally, I'd be really interested to see a Matt Diaz/Nate McLouth platoon at the top of the order. However, if I only could only have one, I'd take Nate McLouth.
Who would you have hitting leadoff?
