Around SBN: NHL Trade Rumors: Do You Make A Move For Rick Nash?

David O'Brien just won't let it die...

Per DOB via mlbtraderumors.com:

Dave O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution passed along a text message (via Twitter) from Johnny Damon about the possibility of joining the Braves: "I hope. They are definitely a team that is on top of the list.”

LINK

I have to assume this is some kind of Boras tactic to drum up more interest. Maybe he told Damon to start texting writers or something. Just let it go already.

Of course Damon would like to come to the Braves. He’d like to be signed by anybody right now.

I'd take him for a million.

No more than that tho.

why?

what does it hurt if we can get him for a million bucks? He gives us a true leadoff man and gives us a ton of flexibility with Heyward. And yeah, his defense isn’t very good, but he’d be in LF and couldn’t possibly be worse than GA was.

Damon
Prado
Chipper
Glaus
BMac
McLouth/Esco
Esco/McLouth
Diaz

And once Heyward is ready:

Damon/Diaz
Prado
Chipper
Glaus
BMac
McLouth/Esco
Esco/McLouth
Heyward

That looks mighty fine to me. It gives us a very good lineup and lets us keep Heyward in AAA to get a few hundred AB’s before his callup in June. It could only help his development and will save us money in the future.

I guess I’m in the minority here, but I’d LOVE Damon for a million bucks or so.

Because, as we learned last season, $1M in June can make a big difference.

I’d just be quiet about it if I were you, mvhsbball. It’s now scripture that Damon would be a terrible signing.

The problem in your scenario is the horrible OF defense...

…until Heyward comes up. Diaz in right and Damon in left is just downright bad. If we had Andruw in his prime in center, we might get away with it, but otherwise, it is pretty ugly.

by cavebird on Feb 10, 2010 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Of course we also learned last year that having an awful hitter in your lineup for months at the start of the season can keep your team from making the playoffs at the end of the season.

by Lennox on Feb 10, 2010 7:56 AM EST up reply actions

Who's awful?...

Diaz isn’t if he can keep up close to his platoon pace, and Melky is average. Heyward should at least be average while getting his bearings at the bigs. So which option is “awful”?

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 10, 2010 9:36 AM EST up reply actions

Melky has a career .716 OPS, that’s awful, especially for a LFer.

by Lennox on Feb 10, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

Did you really just call Damon an awful hitter?

Remember folks, I'm almost always wrong.
My sig was too long...

by Scott Coleman on Feb 10, 2010 11:35 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

He isn;t awful, but I would take Diaz and and Heywards potential over him this year, I’d probably even take Melky. He was jitting in front of Jeter, Tex, and ARod last year and Yankee Stadium. We can’t offer that to help him. His defense is well below average. He’s 36, and the reward simply isn’t worth the risk, even at a million.

by JKowalek on Feb 10, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

well, I think we learned that you can’t have 3 hitters like that…most teams can obsorb one black hole.

I'm with you, mvhsbball

If he can be had for a million, he is worth a shot in the lineup. Even if he ends up being just a bench bat, I think no one could complain for a million.

Hell, I'd take Damon for 2 million

if we platooned him with Diaz.

by alligatorimpersonator on Feb 10, 2010 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

Damon would not sign for a pittance...

…to play in a platoon. If he has to sign for low money, he’ll go where he can get fulltime AB’s (like Detroit).

by cavebird on Feb 10, 2010 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

I mean, that might be the way it is, and if he isn’t willing to platoon we should pass, but there’s no way to know for sure that he wouldn’t be willing to platoon unless he comes out and says so.

by Lennox on Feb 10, 2010 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

That’s fine, I’m only in favor of bringing in Damon under some specific circumstances. Right contract, right use, et cetera … If that’s not what he’s willing to do, let him sign somewhere else.

by Lennox on Feb 10, 2010 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

But…but…it would be such a good platoon…

"Sometimes I wonder what'd it be like to be outside and not hear the birds chirping...I think it'd be kind of nice."

As I have said many places...

…Damon for the right price is okay, but only if you are happy with Diaz on the bench. You mention (correctly) that Damon’s defense is bad, but certainly not worse than Garrett Anderson. This is true. But signing Damon to play left, puts Diaz in right where he is horrible. With McLouth being average in center and not having huge range, that is an absolutely horrible outfield. Atrocious. (Not the worst ever, obviously, as the Nats trotted out OF’s with both Willingham and Adam Dunn in them last year; that is just untoppable.)

So, if you think that Damon is $1 million better than Diaz, signing him for $1 million makes sense. Any other contract value can be substituted in that formula. I don’t really know that he is.

by cavebird on Feb 10, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

well, he’d be our best leadoff hitter, thus moving Mclouth lower in the order where he’s better suited.
