Willy Tavares - 5th OF?

The A's finally released Willy Tavares (after getting him with Adam Rosales from the Reds). Here's a guy who plays (from what I understand) good defense and is a career 82% (194/236) in stolen bases. I'm assuming Schafer will be getting ABs in AAA, leaving us Heyward, McLouth, Diaz and Cabrera...with all due respect to Mitch Jones (who deserves a shot somewhere, sometime) wouldn't Tavares at the minimum salary make a lot of sense for us? Heaven forbid we get a guy who can actually steal a base when we need one...

First of all, when’s the last time the Braves had a 5th outfielder? For at least the last decade or so they’ve only carried 4 and with the versatility of the guys they have (maybe none are amazing in the OF but they can all play around at the different spots) why would they even need one?

Second of all, Willy Taveras? Are you freaking kidding me? I shouldn’t even have to point out how bad he is. And I’m not going to. You obviously have the internet, find out for yourself.

Greg White. First, he’s already on the roster and cheap. He has options so you can send him to AAA if you want. Taveras likely won’t be as cheap, would have to be added to the roster, meaning you’d risk losing another player, and you wouldn’t have the option of sending him to AAA after you’d called him up once without risking another team claiming him off waivers or Taveras himself deciding he wants to become a free agent.

After that, if you look at the two guys, they’re basically the same player, except Gregor can take walks and Taveras can steal bases. They’re both good outfielders, though Taveras is limited to LF and CF, but that’s not that big of a deal. At the end of the day, I’ll take the guy who gets on base better every time.

Hell, I think he is, more or less, Gregor Blanco.

Taveras is at least very similar. They both have wildly fluctuating batting average based upon BABIP and are both slap hitters, fast runners, useful defensively, with absolutely no power. Blanco has better patience and takes more walks, while Taveras has better base stealing ability. Neither of them is particularly valuable. I don’t think Taveras will be more expensive as both will be at league minimum (with Oakland picking up the remainder of the contract). We could probably send Taveras to AAA because nobody would claim him on waivers and what would be the point of Taveras being a free agent after nobody claimed him for a major-league minimum salary?

That all being said, I can’t see a good reason why. How many Gregor Blanco’s does one organization need?

by cavebird on Feb 9, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

My thought was pick up Tavares and dump White...

so you’d swap out one for the other. But it does seem a bit pointless.

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 9, 2010 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

Our emergency 5th and 6th OF’s are already on the team. Infante and Hinske can both play the OF for a short time. Besides why would be want a player that neither the Reds nor the A’s wanted.

There’s not really any way to judge if he’s getting a chance or not until they actually start playing some games.

CB i care about your opinion more than most around here, because you are the most in the know when it comes to the minor leaguers, esp around here….What do you make of this Mitch Jones character…I don’t see the allure…he has power thats great, but he is kinda old and he strikes out a lot and has been playing in hitters leagues for most of his minor league career, should people really be expecting that much outta him, or is it just that people have nothin better to do than talk about bold predictions for AAAA sluggers?

Exactly.

I think the biggest issue isn’t that he wasn’t highly regarded, it’s that he wasn’t highly regarded enough. He started his career with the Yankees and unless you’re a once in lifetime prospect (or at least hyped as one) you just don’t move up to the Majors with them. They’ll sign a vet before they give a nobody a shot. Add in that he was a college guy so he was already 22 when he started his pro career and you’ve got the makings of a guy who’s not gonna get a chance. He was 26 before he even got to AAA, which is nuts since his 2003 at AA as a 24 year old was decent enough to justify a promotion (unfortunately the Yanks often take the same approach to their AAA, just sign a vet) and the next year as a 25 year old was ridiculous and he should have been promoted sooner. So as a 26 and 27 year old he puts up 2 very good years with Columbus in a league that generally favors pitchers. I got to see him play a ton of times these two years and he was generally one of the more impressive hitters around. But, at this point he’s 27 and hasn’t played in the Majors, which, fairly or not, creates a stigma. People think you’ll never be able to play in the Majors because you haven’t already. It’s a Catch 22 and it happens all the time. And his new team, the Dodgers, is more apt to call up the guys they put time and money into developing than some guy they signed to fill out a AAA roster. Then he gets hurt and misses the second half of 07, which means he won’t get called up that year, and the first half of 08, which means he won’t get called up that year because some other guy that’s been grinding it out all year gets advantage. No clue why, he just does. So finally, in 09, he’s doing so well that the Dodgers can’t help but call him up when they need a DH for their interleague play. But, they only use him for that week and don’t even bother to call him back up in September, mostly because by then they have Jim Thome and don’t need a guy like Jones.

Really, there are plenty of logical reasons why Jones, and other guys like him, was never given much of a shot, and very little of it had anything to do with the way he played. This has always been one of the more fascinating things about baseball to me, so much so that I wrote a novel about the phenomena.

As far as what we should realistically expect out of Jones, I don’t honestly know. My guess is that if he got regular at bats, especially as part of a platoon, he’d probably be very effective. He likely wouldn’t hit for a high average, it’d probably drop toward the .250 range, but he’d hit the ball with authority and take some walks, along his fair share of strikeouts. If he was relegated to a less regular role off the bench, I’d like to have the confidence to think that he could handle it, but honestly you never know because the guy has never been a bench player. He’s been playing every day his whole career, and he’s not even a guy with the “pinch hitting” experience of being a DH because he’s a good enough fielder in RF, LF, and 1B that there’s no reason to waste the DH spot on him (by waste I mean use it on him when a worse fielder could be put there).

I think if anyone expects him to come in and hit 40 home runs and win Rookie of the Year as a 32 year old they’re crazy, but I don’t think it’s out of the question that he could earn the spot that Greg Norton had last year, as a first or second option pinch hitter, and one who provides more versatility on defense. While I’m sure there was an inflation in his stats by playing in the PCL, this guy is a true hitter, a true power hitter, and I think he can succeed in the Majors. The fact is, a lot of times the “marginal” guys who end up in AAA forever become better hitters than most of the Major League bench guys because they get the opportunity to play every day (think Keith Lockhart).

While I do think he could be very successful assuming Norton’s role on the bench, I’m betting that he ends up at AAA Gwinnett to start the year, and for the vast majority of the season. Again, it won’t be fair, but that’s the crappy situation for guys like Mitch.

common courtesy

Goodness.

A Braves’ fan posts a question and folks jump down his throat saying he should not be allowed to have kids because he asked such a question. That’s ridiculous, guys.

There are, as several folks pointed out, plenty of good reasons that Tavares is not a fit for the Braves. I realize it may be very obvious to a lot of you, but some fans are not as knowledgable – and that is fine. If we required fans to have a certain knowledge base the crowds in Atlanta (and everywhere else for that matter) would be much smaller.

I enjoy reading this blog because its a great place to learn about the Braves. The petty nonsense really detracts from the blog.

I’ll stand down from my snow-filled soapbox now.

by hollerin' brave on Feb 9, 2010 7:56 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I understand what you’re saying. But in this particular case, the only “advance” level of knowledge that someone needs to have to realize that signing Taveras is unecessary is a base-level knowledge of our active roster – we have plenty of OFers and don’t need a “5th”.
