Braves 2010 Caravan - Publix in Suwanee, GA
I decided to swing by the Braves Caravan on Monday 2/8 that was taking place at the Publix right down the street from my house in Suwanee, GA. I left work at 4 PM thinking I would get there at 4:30 and that would give me enough time to park and be ready for them to arrive at 5 PM. Well, when I got there I saw a line that went all the way down the strip mall, around the corner and around the back of the building. Oh well, so much for getting an autograph today. I later found out from one of the managers of the Publix that fans started lining up there at 10 AM that morning. That's a full 7 hours before the Braves appearance! So I grabbed my camera and my Flip Video and headed to the front of the store. Here's the view from the entrance of the beginning of the line:
Shortly after I arrived the caravan arrived. Brian McCann pulled up first in his Range Rover (I guess he drove separately since he lives in Suwanee) and parked it right next to the people lined up to get in.
Next, the rest of the players got out of the Caravan Bus
Mike Dunn
Jo Jo Reyes
And Don Sutton
Bobby Cox somehow sneaked in the back, and Roger McDowell showed up late. Here are all of the guys sitting at the table signing autographs
Also interesting to note that Jordan Schafer has assumed Kelly Johnson's old #2 jersey. So maybe Heyward will pick #24 now.
Here's a shot of Roger McDowell looking right at me
And a shot of Bobby Cox
You can check out all of the pictures from the first hour of the event (I left after that) and 3 video's at the following gallery: http://ten1photography.com/Sports/Atlanta-Braves/Atlanta-Braves-2010-Caravan/11184321_w4qxm#784136076_wY8mv
I can't wait for the season to start!

I think Roger is checking out the chick behind you. She seems to be really hot..

Thanks gondee. If you ever need someone to come along with you on a media event to document it, let me know. :-)
I’ll be the Photography Intern for the Gwinnett Braves this year…so hopefully I’ll get to meet some of the players then.

lord, thats insanely awesome. I’m jealous. Have fun with that.
If you don’t mind me asking, how do you get a job like that?
"Batting second and playing shortstop-he's Cuban. Yeah, his name's Pablo...no, eh, Yunel Escobar, sorry"
Well, it’s not a job per se but an Internship (which means I get no money!). Anyway, they posted it on their website this summer that they were looking for someone, so I responded and sent them my online galleries from the Gwinnett Braves games I attended last year (link here). They called me in for a meeting then called me back yesterday to say it was mine if I wanted it. It’s going to be tough having to go to 60+ games over the summer and work them instead of watching them, but it should be a great experience.

That last bit is a toughie...
as a born fan, I’ve always found it difficult to stop watching games I’ve worked and actually do work.
I became friends with the girl who had this job with the Norfolk Tides this year and she loved it. She’s not even interested in sports photography, she just likes baseball, but she still had a great time. And you should definitely get to meet the guys, you’ll be in the dugout taking pictures. On most teams there’s somebody who’s into photography, so there’s always an unofficial photographer’s assistant. Should be a great time man, and don’t worry, you’ll see plenty of baseball through the lens.

Gaaaaack. Incredibly jealous!
But you deserve it. I’ve been really impressed with your work – seen it around here and there, and always admired it. I hate to lose the use of my 300mm Canon lens, but I am jumping on the Nikon bandwagon soon. I look forward to watching you leave that miserable cubicle behind and make this your full time gig (living vicariously through you; it’s my dream, too). Let me know when you need an assistant or when your business gets big enough to add more shooters!
Where do you buy your equipment?
Thanks for sharing – I love that you got shots of them arriving. Very cool.
Thanks Lizzie. If you go with Nikon, get their version of the 300mm, it’s a great lens. I probably won’t be able to leave the cubicle behind just yet, but hopefully one day. I normally buy my stuff either used or from bhphotovideo.com.

how do you know about B&H
I thought it only existed around here. Huh. I guess they do a good job at advertising
"Batting second and playing shortstop-he's Cuban. Yeah, his name's Pablo...no, eh, Yunel Escobar, sorry"
B&H is known nationally…I visit a photography forum and it’s mentioned quite a bit there. I never got a chance to go there though when I was in New York last year, but hopefully I’ll get a chance to go one day. I have ordered my last 2 cameras from them.

Yep, I had a pro recommend them as well. Ever deal with Showcase or Professional Photo Resources? I haven’t made it to either just yet.
Outstanding pictures man. That must be one hell of a camera and one skilled ass camerman. It sucks you didn’t get any autographs but thanks for sticking around and taking pictures for us. And good info about Schafer, maybe not mvshball can relax about Heyward’s number.

Thanks
The pictures were taken with a Nikon D700 and 28-70mm f/2.8 Lens. Photography is my hobby and something I’m trying to do on the side so I won’t have to sit in my cubicle for the next 20 years.

bobby looks thrilled
I am most jealous that you had Don Sutton at your stop…I’ve always wanted to meet him…
"If I have asthma, they won't let me scuba. And if I can’t scuba, then what’s this all been about?? What am I working toward??"
Dude, Don Sutton is cool as hell. He is seriously one of the better people I’ve met in baseball. And it’s crazy to hear that voice in real life.

Bobby who?
It’s funny that they put a name card in front of Cox. If you don’t know who he is, get out of the line.

I saw that too
When they make the Mount Rushmore for Baseball, Bobbys head should be there!

Wow,
awesome pictures, nice job. Mike Dunn is a monster, I like him already. And Schafer could pass as Eminem.

I never really noticed it but does look a lot like E. He is getting the tats to pull it off too.

Thanks
Yes I think Schafer looks like he has some thug in him. He has a very confident stride when he walks.

And it’s funny because he’s really very soft spoken, which makes me think that confidence isn’t an act, it’s just him.

Schafer had his arms covered
does this confirm that the Braves don’t allow sleeves of tattoos?
"Batting second and playing shortstop-he's Cuban. Yeah, his name's Pablo...no, eh, Yunel Escobar, sorry"
Huddy pitches with his wrist tattoos exposed every day. Andruw had that awful spider web thing on his elbow, among other arm tats. I don’t think the Braves have an official “cover the tats” rule.
I think you’re right. I do believe that MLB has a rule that when a pitcher has a “sleeve” of tatoos that he has to cover it, based on the theory it can be distracting to hitters, thus giving him and unfair advantage. Again, not sure if that’s an official rule, I think it is. I know that’s the rule in the Minors.

LOL, I can’t believe they actually put a name card in front of Bobby. He’s got his Purell ready, and that expression tells you just how excited he is to be doing this for the millionth time.

I don’t know what color his hair has been, but I do know he eyed up my girlfriend for a solid 30 seconds. He had that locked-on “I’m undressing you with my eyes” man-whore stare.
BTW, we stood in line for 3 hours, were number 321 in a line of over 500. They only gave out 350 tickets which guaranteed an autograph. There were about 150 people that went home disappointed.
It was cold. It was long. But it was worth it…
