Another possible reliever to consider.
Instead of Downs (totally not), and Calero (unless he's cheap, but if he was he'd be signed).........
Why not bring back Will Ohman. there seems to be little interest in him so far, and the few teams that are interested in him seem to be only offering minor league deals.
If he's going to accept a minor league deal (Orioles) if we gave him around the same money he'd likely rather play with us. (Better chance at winning, been here before with success, and he'd have a good shot at getting to the majors.
He'd be cheaper than Downs by a lot, and would give us the 1 thing Downs has over Calero (lefty). He would also not require a roster spot until the end of spring and that's only if he pitched well.

He was solid for us in 2008, but what is his medical status? He only logged 12 innings last season, spent 4 months DLed with shoulder issues and then had surgery in the fall. According to this article, the Orioles watched him throw recently and have offered him a minor league contract, but he is waiting for something better.
If injuries are a concern...
i still don’t see the harm in a minor league deal, and like Proctor he can take his time getting healthy and back in form, and possibly be a great mid season addition.
Why even bother, though
So he can be the 4th, maybe 5th LHRP on the depth chart? (Counting Billy Wagner).
I mean, seems like overkill. It’s nice to have plenty of bullpen options, but, well, we actually already have plenty of options. This team should be able to dip into the minor leagues several times for bullpen options without suffering too much.
Should be...
but where does it hurt to have an extra bullpen arm Bobby can trust waiting in the wings for cheap?
And I don’t count Wagner as a lefty. I know he is, but he’s also the closer and will be used in that role. Unless it’s the last inning or two of a close game, I don’t expect to see Wagner getting the call to face Ryan Howard or Adam Dunn (among other lefty sluggers).
Mariano Rivera or bust.

maybe heyward should pitch
"If I have asthma, they won't let me scuba. And if I can’t scuba, then what’s this all been about?? What am I working toward??"
He could certainly be the right handed…uhhh, lefty pitcher we’ve been looking for!

I understand the rationale of signing relievers to minor league deals. But I don’t understand anyone wanting to throw more money into the bullpen. Much of the anti-Damon rhetoric revolves around the issue of saving what little money they have for midseason needs. That is exactly what they should do. If they’re not going to spend money on a veteran leadoff hitter, then I’m not sure I want them throwing more money at the bullpen. Besides, don’t they have a pretty damned good pen as it stands now?

wait, Jorge Julio, Alan Embree and Ron Villone are still alive?!?
"Batting second and playing shortstop-he's Cuban. Yeah, his name's Pablo...no, eh, Yunel Escobar, sorry"
re: villone
In fact, when he joined the Washington Nationals in 2009, he tied Mike Morgan for the record of most franchises played for in MLB (with twelve different teams).
from wikipedia…we should obv help him break the record…

Love the posting off available relief opts cbwilk.
Now I must admit bringing back Ohman is not a good idea from my end b/c of his shoulder’s status among other problems. For me I would look at Mahay perhaps later in the year or even a Embree or Beimel could be a good opitions but cost could be an issue with Beimel even though he is still unsigned. As of right now I like our bullpen but if Mr. Eric O goes down we could have some problems and Jo-Jo is no way any type of answer.
I of right now I wouldn’t sign anyone and lets just let pitchers and catchers report in 11days and see how things play out.
Their are still some decent-average veteran arms still left on the market but in about another month the list is going to shrink quickly as it always does.

Actually.....
…I’d love to get Bradford on a MiLB deal. Maybe its partly because I just read Moneyball but I think he’d go well with our guys.
Don’t we have 2 non-closer lefties already in O’Flaherty and Dunn?

Don’t forget guys like Mariano Gomez and Lee Hyde that should be in camp with the team in a few weeks, both lefties with track records of success. Oh, and Reyes is likely to make the team as the long reliever since he’s out of options. I’m usually all for some depth signings for our bullpen, but I think we’re fine. With Wagner-Saito-Moylan-O’Flaherty-Medlen-Chavez-Reyes our likely bullpen when we break camp and guys like Dunn, Valdez, Proctor, Hyde, Gomez, and Resop waiting in AAA in case we need them, I think we’re fine.
Right.
I didn’t mean to imply there weren’t others, just that those two were likely to be in our BP all year. EOF, especially is a lock after last season was pretty damn good.
