Braves the Leading Candidate to Sign Top Dominican Shortstop
Talented Dominican shortstop prospect Edward Salcedo may be nearing a deal with the Atlanta Braves. Via MLBTR, the Braves are considered the front runners after asking the commissioner's office to investigate his actual age. From the translation of the original Univision.com article, Salcedo was originally signed by Cleveland as a Scott Boras client in 2007 for $2.3 million. Since then his age has been in dispute. He is now represented by Edgar Mercedes, and Salcedo's correct age has been determined.
The Braves have apparently applied for a visa for Salcedo to have him visit their spring complex in Florida. Atlanta has a history of signing top level Latin shortstop talent, with their most notable signings being Rafael Furcal and Elvis Andrus.
Here is a video of Salcedo (hat tip Prospect Tube):

He better be a badass shortstop for $2.3 million bucks
Lord knows we need solid middle infield prospects.

well, he never actually signed (hence why we can sign him)...
and who knows how much the asking price is now.
Maybe he could be the future at 2nd
and prado could play 1st in the future. Or one of them at third after Chipper retires. I just want someone who can hit
Freddie Freeman sucks
he had a busted wrist while making the toughest jump in minor league baseball…he struggled a little bit, so obviously he’s not a good prospect anymore. Trade for Adrian Gonzalez!!!!!

Then Logan Schafer and Heyward suck too cause those guys have been injured.
Just messin mvhsbball, I know you weren’t serious cause you’d rather trade for Pujols, right?
I guess
the only problem is that we already signed Troy Glaus for 2010, so im not exactly sure where Albert would play.

we’ll field 8 and let albert DH……national league style…:p
Pujols is NOT God.... sure he'll hit .350, hit 50 bombs, and drive in a 125....but then again...so will Heyward..

Amen, Escobar could be gone in 3 or 4 years, same with Chipper. This guy sounds like a 1st round type player, I hope we get him and a few more infield prospects in the mix.
I was thinking Esco moves to third eventually.
Here are Pujols's stats: 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000. That's right. He is batting a thousand, with a thousand OBP (naturally), and every hit has been a home run, and thus his OPS is a perfect 5.000.
me too.

2013
We have Escobar in arbitration thru 2013, we have an option on Chipper in 2013. Will Wren deal with Escobar’s agent? Will the Furcal debacle cost the Braves an extension of Escobar? WHen will Chipper retire? Thank goodness we have some time. I’m glad we’re front-runners for this type player. When he’s 22 or 23 years old, we’re likely to be needing help at short, 3rd or both.
We can sign Escobar without ever even talking to his agent.

Chipper
We’re past due needing to back up Chip long term. I’d like to know more about Salcedo’s tools. His swing actually reminds me of Esco. Can he run/steal, field etc? He must be fairly intelligent. He’s a former Boros client, emphasis on former.
Supposing we do sign this guy, which seems like it will be the case… Where does he play this year?
My bet is that they hold him out of full season ball and he crushes Danville.
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.
Was about to link that...
very interesting. And from size descriptions, he sounds more likely to end up at 3rd than Esco.
another old discussion about Salcedo
In this discussion a good point was brought up about Elvis Andrus. Being a key part of the Tex trade, but still being years away from the bigs. Signing Salcedo strengthens our farm system and could be used to grab another big part down the road.
Also, interesting tidbit of info. The Braves offered Felix Hernandez more money than Seattle, but he signed with the Mariners because Freddy Garcia was his idol and was pitching there. Never knew that.
DOH!
And Freddy Garcia was his idol?!?!?!?!?
WHAT KIND OF AN IDOL IS FREDDY GARCIA?
The Braves had a few pretty good idols play in their organization. Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Warren Spahn, and Phil Niekro to name a few.

I remember I used to had this free internet service called Freei. They advertised the crap out of Freddy Garcia for some reason. I believe they were a sponsor or something. I guess some people thought Garcia would be Mr. Somebody..

Everything I read about him suggests he's moving to 3B.
Read: Chipper’s replacement.

Chipper's replacement for a little more than $2MM?
Done deal.

A prospect project.......
Maybe Terry can work out the rough edges in that swing and make him a solid hitter.
TP
he doesn’t even project confidence. He always has a look on his face like he’s trying not to shit.
lol…its weird how our former NL MVP gets bashed so much as a hitting coach….

seems like we’re always getting top notch prospects from the DR is that because our scouting is jut that good?
i wouldnt say we get top prospects…it seems we do the most with what we get….we get really solid players who fly slightly under the radar…Teheran was highly touted, but far from the top prospect that year (if i remember), the same goes for the Delgados.
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?
by fatazfoot on Jan 7, 2009 8:59 PM EST
Teheran is from Columbia, and he actually was the top international prospect that year.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it: https://www.createspace.com/3407939

i knew he was from COlumbia, but I forgot whether there was a higher prospect than him…so i was wrong…eh it happens…i still hold firm that we dont traditionally get the high end talent out of the DR

I think you’re right, the big name DR guys all seem to end up with the Yanks and Red Sox. But I think the Braves get the best out of Panama, a lot of the best out of Venezuela, and do very well in some of the more untapped places.

completely agree…. they do a much better job than everyone else gettin players from the nontraditional Latin American countries (Andruw Jones from Curacao for example)

So this gets a front page article...
a possibly signed Dominican, while our actually signed Europeans get a lowly fan shot? I’m thinking their may be a bit of Hemispherism going on around here.
We signed some cricket players?

well
seeing that nobody in Europe plays cricket (silly Americans call the UK Europe), i don’t get your point.
we signed some pretty talented players from Europe. will they pan out? doubtful, but we’re making in-roads in a new talent pool (where VERY few teams scout).
we’re going to sign this kid to be our defacto 1st round pick, allowing us some flexibility to go over slot for some pitchers we like in the supplemental round (knowing we have the 3B of the future in the fold).

well
Silly Europeans pretending they don’t play cricket. Saying that nobody plays cricket in Europe is like saying nobody expects a special ending at Fran’s Spa behind most truck stops on I-75.

Wait, if people in the UK play cricket, and the UK is in Europe, then don’t people in Europe play cricket?

thats whati was thining, but theres tons of wasted movement and that makes it harder to make contact, generally.

true
but big long swings and a great eye can get you A LOT of hits (just ask AROD (pre ’roids)).
by apoxonbothyourhouses on Feb 19, 2010 5:23 PM EST up reply actions
Tons of upside but....
let’s not get carried away people. He’s 18 years old, we haven’t even signed him yet, and he hasn’t played one inning of pro ball. Let’s hold off on penciling him as Chipper’s replacement for at least a couple days.
R.I.P Jazz #6
Let's Get Him
He looks good on film don’t know how he’ll do in live games against better pitchers but we really need infield depth in our minor league system. If we can get a 3rd base prospect to take over when Chipper leaves.Maybe our recent draft pick Kreke I think his name is can fill that hole.
no offense but Kreke was a 22 year old who showed no power at all in Rookie Ball..im not really sure he is the guy thats gonna help us out too much.
I’m still holding out hope for Brandon Hicks…he adjusted well later in the year…if he can keep getting better he has the skills to be a very good 3b/ss. I love his stat line for 2009, he just needs to bring that contact rate up a bit and his slugging will increase over time…and i love the 17/18 steals

I'm partial to Edison Sanchez..
big kid, interested to see what he can do once he gets stateside after a couple years for the DSL. Still young, big frame from the listed size.
There is a Hanson kid down on the farm too, but he seems like a DH type with very poor fielding #s.
by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 22, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions
I hope we sign this kid before
Other teams get involved and push the bid higher.
I hear this guy's Dominican...
If that’s the case, why hasn’t Omar Minaya signed him yet?
The only time the Mets win is in the offseason.
Cause he’s young and talented, neither are Omar’s style.
