FINALLY

I am itching for baseball and spring.

Yes. Yes.

Watching the same six old Phillies, Yankees, MetsRed Sox “classic” games on MLBN with two feet of snow outside can only cut it for so much longer.

MLBN actually plays a bit of Braves games

Ive seen the early 90s twins and pirates series several times recently.

They do have the Braves in relatively regular rotation..

Just seems like the only ones I catch are heartbreakers.

the walk off wins of 2009?

Every time I catch one, it's the Lonnie Smith game from '91.

I’ll keep the DVR on the lookout for happier Braves times.

Spring Training Success

How do you guys view it? Does it mean anything?

I had always considered a good spring training record to mean we had a lot of ‘not quite ready for prime time’ players who wouldn’t contribute for a few years.

by rhinoskin on Feb 19, 2010 9:35 AM EST reply actions

I view baseball ST as I view NFL preseason…not a good barometer unless there is something blatantly obvious wrong. I think success can’t be judged by any amount, but it can expose flaws in your team (aka the pen keeps getting rocked over and over in ST). But I take all results from ST with a grain of salt and am just happy to see them out there playing.

by soup du jour on Feb 19, 2010 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

I never pay attention to our record, just how the guys are performing and who they’re performing against. I mean, i hate to see the Braves lose, ever, but it’s not like these are real games.

You can’t really rely on ST record to indicate future success, mainly because of the regulars only playing half-games or less for the first half of ST. So many of those game results are influenced, if not downright dictated by, guys who never had a chance to make the team in the first place who will be sitting in the minors come Opening Day. Like soup^ said, Looking at ST results holistically can expose a systematic flaw, so in that way it is diagnostic, but it is not indicative of future performance.

by J-Freak on Feb 19, 2010 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah

didn’t the Braves have the best record in ST last year?

by J-Freak on Feb 19, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

eh

i look at match ups a lot more towards the end of the season. like i wont care how well Heyward does against a AA lefty as much as against Santana towards the end of ST after pitchers have worked out some kinks

That should be fun since UGA is always so good. And the Braves have a history of getting UGA guys so you might see some future Braves.

Anybody around Atlanta should try to get to a Georgia Tech game on a Friday. Righty Deck McGuire is Tech’s ace and he’s going to be a top 10 pick in this year’s draft. He’s definitely worth going to watch and maybe trying to get an autograph from, which won’t be hard since Deck is one of the nicest kids you could want to meet.

Georgia will depend a lot on how the kids develop...

they will be very young, and look to be heavy on defense, speed, and pitching, with suspect power. Colby May and Zach Cone are keys offensively. It’ll be an interesting team to see develop. They have a good bit of talent, but as said above, it’s very young and not much for slugging.

Also, Bobby Valentine was saying some great things about Gordon Beckham on ESPN this morning. Not sure if that’s a good sign, or bad.

I’ll be shooting the Tech game on Saturday afternoon.

If only I still had friends at the Green house...

you could enjoy one of the best experiences in college baseball, talking trash from Kudzu Hill. So many great stories, from the umps for a regional coming to the house late one Friday because they didn’t know Athens liquor sales (non-bar) end at 11:30 and wanted some beer, to heckling Travis Storrer (Clemson) so bad he had to be pulled for game 3 of the series, to former Red and Black cartoonist Mack Williams doing such a fine job heckling LSU’s RF he got congratulated for it (he called the guys mom posing as a reporter for the Times-Picayune doing a feature story to get some background). Good times.

So I'm starting it now...

Because they started so late last season and we didn’t really wear them out (alright so the Bravos corporate managment wore one of them out)…
