Baseball Roadtrip
Hey everybody, I have a baseball-related question and I'd like gather a few opinions if I could.
I'm currently planning a trip with a couple buddies this summer to visit about 6 or 7 different baseball stadiums throughout the country. We've already decided on three we'd like to visit - Wrigley Field, Fenway, and New Yankee Stadium (gotta get the cliches out of the way). This leaves me with about 3 or 4 more stadiums to check out.
I've read about some great stadiums to visit, but I'd like to get a first-hand account of what some stadiums are like. Has anyone been to some stadiums that are just too good to pass up? Any that I should look into more deeply? Thanks.

Good to know
a lot of lists have Dodger stadium as a must see. Have you been able to trek over to AT&T park ever?

AT&T is ok
It’s in a cool loctation of town, and is neat because it’s by the water – otherwise it wasn’t my favorite. The lower level has a closed concourse, which is a big negative for me. I liked Seattle quite a bit, Coors in Denver is nice (but not close to any other parks). I’ve heard good things about Kaufmann in KC, although that would involve going to see the Royals. Definitely reccomend Fenway and Wrigley if you’ve never been.

PNC Park in Pittsburgh is really nice, as is Camden Yards in Baltimore. Philadelphia was okay, Cinci was sorta meh, I would skip Nationals Park.
PNC is one of the best in the league, IMO. Pittsburgh is a must for anyone! I spent six years there for my PharmD. and was able to experience everything it has to offer. I highly recommend it. I don’t know if you heard, but the Pirates suck, so the game tickets are not pricey at all. Make sure you hit the Southside up (streets 10 through 26). It’s all bars and restaurants. Must hit: JAck’s, Fatheads, and Casey’s (the midget bar).
Went to Wrigley last year and sat in the bleachers… good God! The bleacher seats were an experience themselves. Beer throwing, chicks flashin each other, I heard cuss words I didn’t know existed, Wrigleyville is a must if you go. You can’t really miss it.

Awesome.
Thanks for the tip about Pittsburgh. That’s another thing – I’m gonna want to check out the stadium, but I’m definitely going to want to check out the city before and after the game.

Have fun getting tickets to Fenway. You got to go to Camden, its a classic stadium.

Haha thanks
they sell out every game, but they still have plenty of tickets for sale now. Except when they’re playing the Yankees – those are sold out for the next few years at least.

for not tooo much, they’ll be pricey but not ridiculously so.

I haven’t been there personally, but I have it on very good authority from family members that Chase Field is a great place to see a game.
this
very easy to get to off the highway, pretty cheap and its a beautiful stadium. i go to at least 5 or 10 games a year and its a blast.

I’m new to the area, so I was thinking about spending a couple of weekends during the summer in Flag. I hear it is quite a bit cooler there. How’s the traffic in San Diego? I’ve noticed that the 10 is really backed up on weekends headed west. A customer told me that everyone heads to the beach on the weekends. I don’t know if I could stomach it. You need to know that I am a rural FL Panhandle transplant and city traffic kills me. That’s why I like getting around over here. It’s stupid easy! HAHA.

Ya, Flagstaff is great during the Summers. There’s basically nothing to do if you’re not an outdoors person, but if you are, you’ll love it.
And San Diego traffic is def. worse than Phoenix, but you get that anywhere you go in Cali. It’s nothing compared to LA traffic tho (barf.)

Chase
I live here in PHX and the stadium is really nice. Easy to get in and out of as well. Don’t know much about the nightlife and such because I’m such an old married man, but I love the stadium.
I went to a Brave’s series in HOU and it’s really cool to see the hill in center. I still don’t know if I like the idea of it that much, but it is certainly different. And the stadium itself is beautiful. I also saw a couple at Wrigley and I agree that it is a must see. Note: I actually got to see Glavine win his 300th game there! I hate that it was a Mets game, but I framed the ticket anyway.
by I Saw Buzz Beaned on Feb 17, 2010 2:04 PM EST up reply actions
I dont know much about the PHX nightlife, but there’s some great places to eat and drink before and/or after the game that are within walking distance of the park. If you go to Chase, you gotta go to Alice Cooperstown.
And for being downtown in a big city, it’s safe as can be around the stadium…which is the total opposite of St. Louis or NY.

Anyone been to Kauffman Stadium?
Here are Pujols's stats: 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000. That's right. He is batting a thousand, with a thousand OBP (naturally), and every hit has been a home run, and thus his OPS is a perfect 5.000.
i have, but not since it was renovated.

I'm glad you posted this...
Cuz I wanted to road(air)trip to a Braves away game this year and wanted some suggestions too. I’ve thought about St, Louis (April), Philly (July I think), or Cincy. Any thoughts from anyone?
Options
If you’re already going to be in NY, then there is no reason you can’t pull the New England Swing, starting obviously with the Mets. From there, if you’re on a budget, you can take china town buses to philadelphia, baltimore, and DC. Philly has hostels and great public transportation to get around, Baltimore is a great city to spend the day in, but I did ride back to the bus station through the real live set of The Wire. When I did my trip, new National Park wasn’t built, so I can’t tell you too much about there.
If you’re not from the New England Area, it might be worth your time, if you have a car, to go from Fenway to Toronto simply for the fact that you will be able to experience the great city of Toronto (beautiful women), and also the obligatory—dare I say mandatory—stop at Cooperstown. For those that haven’t been to Cooperstown, make the effort to experience that little slice of Americana.
Outside of that geographic region, PNC is one of the best, comparable to St. Louis (best hot dogs) for the most magnificent view looking out of park. Kansas City has a great collegiate field feel, although with the outfield expansion, that may have gone by the wayside—additionally, however, there is the negro league hall of fame and museum there.
Lastly, the best ballpark of the new breeds is far and away San Diego. Great area of town, great city, great food, great weather (watch out for June gloom). Outside of that, stay as far away from Oakland as you possibly can.
As voucher for these opinions, I spent the Summer of 2007 driving to all of the parks in the major leagues. I maintained a blog for the first half, but couldn’t maintain the grind of driving, finding internet and blogging once I got past fenway down the east coast for the final stretch. Lets just say the trip involved a lot of sneaking into hotels in the morning to eat free breakfasts, showering at Gold’s gyms across the country with a travel pass, and a mild breakdown on the long haul from Seattle to Milwaukee.
It's looking like
for budgetary purposes, I should make an East Coast trip this summer and then a West Coast trip next summer. Do you have a link to your blog? I’d like to check it out

attitudes like
They have the smartest/best fans in baseball.
No other team is as classy and historically significant as theirs.
I've found
That A’s/Giants fans to be the most smarmiest, arrogant, pompous in baseball. But I think a lot of that has to do with the area they live in, first and foremost.
I have to second the notion that Cards fans are some of the best around. They always travel well, but they’re often decent folks, and they actually like the game of baseball, and aren’t nearly as bandwagon as Cubs or Red Sox fans.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I’ve been amazed at how clueless Nationals fans are. I can only hope that once baseball has been around a few years they’ll get a clue.

In all fairness
There are a lot of intelligent Nationals fans, just like there are intelligent Marlins, Pirates, and Rangers fans. It’s just the ones that know the team aren’t the same ones going to the games. Nationals Park isn’t exactly fan-friendly, no matter what way you spin it – drive there, and drop $20 to park and get slammed in car traffic, or take Metro (pay to park, pay to ride, time consumed, usually equates to more than $20) and deal with people traffic after the game. And those who tend to know the team doesn’t like their odds given the last three seasons, leading them to not bother.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
You gotta show up before 6 and park at one of the meters a few blocks away. I didn’t pay to park at any of the games I went to.

I'll have to think about that
Last time i was at Nats Park, it was a 15-inning meaningless game between the two worst teams in baseball, and I took Metro, and didn’t get back to Springfield, and then home until about 3:30 am. A car would have been nice to have had instead.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I’ve seen a few folks mention Camden and I’m going to second (third?) that one. I hadn’t been in a decade or so then I went last year and I was blown away by how outstanding it still is. Top notch park and you can buy a 9 dollar ticket and hang out on the outfield wall, if you’re tall enough.
Also, the new park in DC is fantastic. I know it has a good seating capacity, but it’s a very intimate ballpark and there doesn’t seem to be a bad seat in the house. Lots of great stuff around the park, including the ugliest statues ever made.

Hmm
My favorite AL park thusfar has been Camden Yards. And that says something, because I’m a native Virginian, and hate Baltimore and Maryland, but Camden Yards is a great ballpark. My favorite NL park has been PETCO Park out in San Diego – it’s beautiful, and is so much win on various aspects of architecture, design, and just watching baseball at. That, and when you leave the park, you’re still in beautiful San Diego.
And something to definitely not overlook, is if you’re on the road, don’t hesitate to find out what MiLB parks are in the crossroads, because as much as I treasure my trips to the MLB parks, I’ve had some of the most relaxing and often, best food, at the Minor league parks.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Camden Yards is looking like it’s a must see park. Definitely going to look into it.
And good call on the MiLB games, I really hadn’t thought about it yet. Although I’ve only been to three MiLB parks, each one was a great experience. The vibe is different from MLB in a good way, for sure.

The best part is
Usually when you road trip for MLB parks, there are almost always MiLB parks peppered in between. I had this grandiose idea for a road trip I was going to do before some financial issues, that would have started with the Brewers, Cubs, Kane County Cougars (A’s), White Sox, West Michigan White Caps (Tigers), Tigers, Indians and concluding it with the Lake County Captains (Indians). It would have been cold, but no doubt epic.
Hell, one of the biggest things I’m looking forward to this season is the re-opening of the Diamond in Richmond, Virginia for the Giants’ AA squad. MiLB is just that much fun.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I just can’t wait to go to the Diamond and sit on the uncomfortable bleachers that are awkwardly pitched forward and enjoy the general smell of stagnant water and piss that wafts around the place..

I mentioned it elsewhere, but I’m absolutely checking out some minor league stuff in the Mid-South this year. I live in Memphis, so Redbirds games are easy and I want to get up to Nashville to see the Sounds at home, too. Going to Jackson, TN, to see the Diamond Jaxx when the MS Braves come to town and also want to get down to MS to see some Braves home games. Probably gonna hit Chattanooga, too.

I almost forgot about the Travelers in Arkansas, too. It’s been years since I went to a game in Little Rock and they have a new stadium now. Louisville is probably my best shot at seeing Gwinnett. My family has an apartment there that’s about a ten minute walk from the stadium, so I’ve seen quite a few games there. The stadium is great and has easy access to the players, like CB said.
It’s up on a huge hill so you have a great view of the city, and it’s right next to the aquarium and the rest of downtown. And, if you wanted to check out Lookout Mountain or Rock City, they have a free shuttle service that’ll take you right there from the stadium.

I went to a couple of Bay Bear games in Mobile to see the Braves play and it is a really nice minor league park. It’s also a quick drive to Biloxi (added bonus). I also recommend the park in Jacksonville. It’s only a couple of years old and it’s very nice.
The cool thing about MiLB is that if you plan ahead, you can book cheap tickets really close to the field. I got front row, third baseline tix in JAX only a month or so ahead of time.

There's a lot I love
but it isn’t cheap. Maybe I’m spoiled, but 30 bucks for parking is a lot. Parking downtown during business hours is crazy.
Stadiums
Wrigley is a must…if you are going to be up in Chicago I would look to see if you can map out a road trip from Minnesota to St. Louis. In that trip you can see the Twins new stadium, Milwaukee (nice..but miss county stadium), wrigley, US Cellular, Kauffman Field (Perhaps my favorite park), and St. Louis. This would not be the best parks..but would be an easy trip and all (with the exception of the White Sox) are good places to see a game.
I have been to Turner, Fulton, Camden Yards, Miller Park, County Stadium, Wrigley, old Comiskey Field, Kauffman Stadium, Mile High, Oakland Colisium, the old park in San Fran, Jack Murphy in San Diego, Dodgers, and Camden Yards.
The two best parks were Kauffman and Camden for what it is worth.
i have also been to a bunch of parks
the Metrodome, Wrigley, Camden, Fenway, Mil County, Turner Field, the Trop, the Marlins Stadium, Miller Park (i dont know what the hell they call that thing anymore)
the worst is the Trop…the oddest was the Marlins because there was literally 7000 people there (i dont care what they told me the attendence was, we counted)…and the best were Miller Park and Camden…Turner is a great stadium as well (cheap tickets)…as for the getting there early I would do that for any stadium i went to, but Milwaukee is definately a must, most people are pretty nice and will let you hang out and enjoy a brat so long as u bring beer. plus Milwaukee is a great city ( although i may be partial cause i used to live there).
