What are you watching/reading/playing right now?
Ever since I started posting here way back when I have tried to get one of these posts up about once a quarter. The basic premise is simple: we get to learn about each other by finding out what books, bands, games and movies/shows each other are in to. As always I will go first!
Currently reading BA's and John Sickels prospect books and Book 3 of Steven King's Dark Tower series, The Waste Lands. I have never read anything from King before but a friend got me the first four Dark Tower books for Christmas and they are amazing.
Currently watching "The Big Bangs Theory" Season 2 with my girlfriend. She kept telling me how funny it was and I resisted, but I admit now that it is quite humorous.
Currently playing Mass Effect 2. Best. Game. Evar.
Now what are you into?

Crazy mann
I was thinking about making one of these posts a little while ago. Always nice to see what the TC faithful do in their free time:
Reading: Uhhh…my stupid text books? I dont really read much since im always reading for class
Watching: VALENTINES DAY!!! Just kidding… I saw Book of Eli the other day and it pretty badass movie. Im not really into TV that much, but definately will be watching FlashForward when it comes back on in a month. And I always have ESPN or MLBN on as well.
Playing: CoD:MW2 (still) on my 360. I’ll do work on any of you fools. And then just the really good PS3 games that came out a while ago…we got one for Christmas and I’m still playing the big games from 07 and 08. MLB The Show 2010 comes out soon…CANT WAIT.

why back to the “Omar Minaya is my hero!” signature again?
"Batting second and playing shortstop-he's Cuban. Yeah, his name's Pablo...no, eh, Yunel Escobar, sorry"
Because he did absolutely nothing to help my least favorite team out this offseason…that, and just to remind myself that he took HWSNBN away from us when no one else would. :)

Thanks
The charactors in The Stand were so well developed, it keeps calling me back. Who knows, maybe M-O-O-N spells Swan Song. Tom Cullen is my favorite charactor in any book, ever, Trash Can Man had a tough trip cross country. Mother Abigail had her issues to deal with. So much of it was visual, you could see the settings. Nick Andros in the jailhouse, for example. I’ve never found a book that managed that like The Stand. Matching up a deaf mute Nick with a slow minded Tom, the people dying from stupid little things we take for granted. King was brilliant when writing that book. I’ll try to find Swan Song, If it’s even close, I’ll enjoy it.
My wife is NOT a reader and she picked up and ate it up. Same post-apocalyptic (did I spell that right) premise, but nuclear vs. disease. I’ll tell you my favorite characters after you read it. I wouldn’t want to influence you in any way. Enjoy!!!

It wasn’t at the used bookstore, Books a Million carries it, but were out. It is between printing editions, so they cannot order it. There’s a better used store and plenty of other new book bookstores I haven’t gotten to yet. But I intend to get it. Living so far out, about 40 miles, it takes a minute when something goes wrong. I’m going back to Chatt next Tuesday, I take my Dad to breakfast every Tuesday, I’ll try again.

Reading: The Southern Vampire Mysteries, aka the Sookie Stackhouse novels. Its the series that True Blood on HBO is based on. I’ll finally be reading CB’s book after the first of the month when I get paid and can afford to put my order in:)
Watching: Just picked up the Star Trek:Enterprise series on DVD. Current series that I’m watching include NCIS, Caprica, Stargate Universe, Warehouse 13, Pawn Stars, American Pickers, and I’m looking forward to the return of V next month.
Playing: Still playing Lord of the Rings Online, recently picked up Everquest 2 and have really enjoyed it so far. I really want to try Star Trek Online, but I’m waiting on that for now. Recently got my hands on Dragon Age Origins, but I really want to get Mass Effect 2 soon.
Shouldn't Reid Gorecki get a shot in RF before that Heyward kid everybody talks about?
Watching: The Olympics. Though this stuff starts out slowly. Stuff like cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and women’s hockey doesn’t do much for me-neither do the free-style skiing events. Have to wait for more of the speed skating, Men’s hockey, figure skating, and slalom to pick up.
Also watch a lot of NCIS-that show is still getting better even into the 7th season. That and Burn Notice are the only series’ I follow.
Reading: Nothing at present, but the last book I finished was The Gathering Storm, from the Wheel of Time series by (the now deceased, RIP) Robert Jordan.
Playing: The Show 09, of course.
I’m into a lot of graphic novels at the moment because I’m going to be doing a thesis on them next fall, so “Batman: The Long Halloween,” “Watchmen,” “X-Men: God loves, man kills,” “Marvel Civil War,” and “V for Vendetta.”
Watching “Law and Order SVU” (What I can get of it when the Olympics aren’t dominating NBC’s schedule, that is), House, Human Target, and Community.
Listening to Flogging Molly (saw them live in Memphis Friday night- AMAZING show), Flatfoot 56, and Skillet.
Playing Mass Effect 2 and BioShock 2.

I read it over two nights because I kept deliberately slowing myself down and forcing myself to savor the artwork and the story, rather than rush through the way the kid in me wanted to. Tim Sale is a master, and my favorite Batman artist not named Jim Lee.

How did I miss this conversation. Batman Returns and Hush are my favorites. Also have to love the Batman & Robin All Star because you get Frank Miller and Jim Lee. Wow.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it: https://www.createspace.com/3407939

Hush is hands-down my favorite. Jim Lee is a god among men in that field, and the story was fantastic. Not so much the Hush follow-ups, but the original 12-parter is amazing.
I still love the art of All-Star, but the story did not sit right with me because of how it perverted my childhood hero into that sadistic, dark(er) almost-villain. There is only one Batman, and he isn’t that much of a bastard.
See, I loved the story in that, because he was making Batman such a bastard. The stuff with the Green Lantern was classic. As many other amazing things as Frank Miller’s done nothing is better than what he’s done with Batman. He understands that character even better than Bob Kane.
And how amazing is Jim Lee at drawing women? I realized a few months ago that the reason I have completely unrealistic expectations of women isn’t because of TV or movies or anything, it’s because of Jim Lee.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it: https://www.createspace.com/3407939

I know, right? Catwoman in the Hush story? Are you bloody KIDDING me? No woman I meet out here is ever going to match up to that. I might as well cash in my chips and stop playing.
Though I can see your point, I’ll never get past the bastion of good that is the Batman I grew up with and who is part of my inspiration for wanting to go into law enforcement, so I’ll never be able to fully appreciate All-Star. It’s just not within me to do so.
I get that. The Super Friends Batman most of us grew up with, who hangs out with Superman at the Hall of Justice and says things like ‘old chum’ is very different.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it: https://www.createspace.com/3407939
www.dropoutproductions.com
Well, not THAT Batman. Not the gay one. My first exposure to Bats was the animated series, which lgically led to the Tim Burton movie, etc… The Batman who is dark and fear-inducing and absolutely pants-crappingly devastating to criminals, but is a good man at heart and is just soft enough in the right places. There is a difference between being a dark and conflicted (read: cool) character and being a spiteful asshole, and Frank Miller skipped right over that line in All-Star.
Hmm, I guess the way I looked at it is that the animated series (which is still the best animated show ever made) and the Burton movies are great, but they’re also necessarily simplistic. Since they’re aimed at a very wide audience the ability to really delve into the character and show how he’s conflicted, how someone can be so good and so twisted at the same time, gets taken away. Basically, I see things like that as being great when you’re a kid (and I was 8 when the first movie came out and 11 when the animated series started) but as you become an adult it’s time to get past the cursory glance at the character and understand the realities of a man who’s deranged enough to put on a bat suit and fight crime.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it: https://www.createspace.com/3407939
www.dropoutproductions.com
Well, obviously the show was a bit simplistic because no matter where they went with it it was ultimately a kids show, so that spectre kept it from being something even more epic (not that that stopped me from buying all four seasons on DVD or anything). But, like Rorschach in Watchmen, the true Batman is not quite all there, yes, but not to the point of hating everyone and everything. He has an uncompromising moral system that nothing has yet been able to break, and though in All-Star he didn’t already have the Batman-Robin relationship to lean on, there’s no way the true Batman takes a kid- from the same life-altering circumstance as himself, no less- and treats him like the bad guy. There’s other evidence that he’s slightly off-keel, like the whole “Bruce is the mask, Batman is the man” deal, but All-Star was just on an entirely different plane. The Burton/Nolan/Jim Lee/Jeph Loeb Batman is a figure i can respect, despite social shortcomings. The All-Star Miller version is not; he’s not any better than the psycopaths he fights against.
I’ve read the Killing Joke, possibly the greatest Joker story ever. Year One is a prerequisite if you want to get the most out of the Loeb/Sale trio (Haunted Knight, Long Halloween, and Dark Victory) because those two used Year One as the setup for their stuff, revisiting the characters and using the interpretations of Gordon etc. that Miller set up there.
hows the new Bioshock? I loved the first one but no tengo dinero to buy the new one.

Not bad. Not as great as the first one, but pretty close. You dual-wield plasmids and guns now instead of having to switch back and forth, which makes the combat flow better. Not much of a graphical improvement though, other than the tweaks to the little sisters. Most of the plasmids are retreads, they didn’t add much new stuff. In short, if you have the money it’s pretty fun, but its not quite in the hallowed must-have territory.
ah that's a bummer
I think i’ll just wait to rent it or wait for the price drop in a few months.

I mean, read it. Alan Moore is the best writer of the comic medium ever and he was never better than with Watchmen. He completely upends the notion of the superhero all while re-writing history and telling one of the most lyrical and harrowing stories anyone has ever come up with. To me, humanity is going to be hard pressed to create something more intricate and telling about humanity as a whole. But that’s just men.

never could get into it, and the Jackie Earle Haley voice overs put it over the top bad for me. But hey, different strokes for different folks (as we see in the Gilmore/Idol discussion).
The movie was just about as true to the original story as was possible. If you didn’t like it, you won’t like the comic either.

This. I thought their handling of Roarchach was phenomenal. He was exactly what he should have been. And the Dr. Manhattan creation section was perfect, far better than anything I could have imagined from reading the book.
As far as being drawn out, it’s an epic, that tends to happen.

Well...
I’ve never been a comics guy, so that is true. Although I have liked several of the movies from graphic novels, comics, etc.
I'm still divided about whether I'm okay that they switched the ending.
They didn’t switch it any way that changed the story greatly, but it felt…unnecessary.

I was very very bothered by it when I first saw the movie. I saw it at an early screening and couldn’t even talk to anyone I knew who’d read the book about it, so it was doubly bad. But after seeing it a second time and realizing that it was basically the same ending I got over it. I actually like the fact that it made things more centered on Dr. Manhattan. Still, I do agree, pretty unnecessary.

Reading – Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon, he’s seriously the best living writer. Just finished reading Good Omens by Neil Gaiman (the second best living writer) and Terry Pratchet and Look At The Birdie by Kurt Vonnegut (the best non-living writer). All are fantastic.
Watching – Good stuff on TV like Chuck (Kristen Kreuk!), The Office, Community, Archer, and others. Not a lot of good movies out lately, but I just saw Valentine’s Day and it’s not that bad.
Playing: I usually don’t play games but I’ve actually been playing Baseball Mogul 2010. Pretty interesting to employ the develop, use up while they’re cheap, trade for talent, rinse and repeat method.

My favorite Vonnegut novel is still Slaughterhouse-Five. Nothing he did hit closer to home for me than that. It’s probably because it was the first one I read, but still. After that, maybe Timequake. It’s hard to pick, cause I’ve read them all and they’re all just so good.

I get sad everytime I see F&G
I dunno why it was ever canceled. Right up there with Kitchen Confidential and Studio 60 as great series that died for no reason.
"If I have asthma, they won't let me scuba. And if I can’t scuba, then what’s this all been about?? What am I working toward??"
The reason F&G was cancelled
Was because of th music. The music was such an integral part of the show but billed too costly to get the rights.
Oh how I miss that show…

Watching Flash-forward, Human Target and Caprica (which I am pleasantly surprised by). I completely whiffed on the Battlestar Galatica series so I figured why not start with the prequel first (how’s that for an original idea?). Movies – District 13 Ultimatum!!! Sat down to watch it thinking I was about to sit through a b-list movie and was blown away. The action scenes and special effects were far beyond what I expected and my only complaint was the rather abrupt ending.
I haven’t read any publications in a while so I’ll list some of my favorites. Loved the first 2 Dark Tower series books by King but the lengthy delay between the third and then fourth books killed it for me. “The Stand” is still my all time favorite! Blogs – TC is my home but I"m really digging PWHjort’s work over at Capitol Avenue Club.
I still have not delved back into the gaming world yet though I have been tempted by friends. The last gaming system I owned was a Sega Genesis (no laughs please) before I switched to PC gaming way back when. I’ve always been a Sodoku fan and recently I’ve been frequenting Web Sodoku at least two or three times a week just the clear the ole knoggin.
Drinks – not really a big liquor fan but a friend of mine brought a bottle of Zaya with him on a recent visit. Absolutely the best liquor I have EVER tasted! Grolsch is still my fav beer though I did enjoy some Sam Adams Noble Pils recently. My wife is friends with some folks who own a local micro-brew so I’m fortunate to beg off some decent ale’s every now and again.
You aren’t the czar of typographic emphasis
Caprica has been pretty good so far. The producers have said they wanted a show that appealed to a wider audience so they designed it to be a “family drama” similar to the old Dallas or Dynasty shows, just with a SciFi spin.

This entire season has been mediocre

His books are relaxing
I have several of his books, and the one thing is that even in the most tense of situations, the rest of the book is so eloquently written that I find it easy to relax when reading. Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is still one of my favorites, but he seems to have this reoccuring theme of always having his protagonists find solace and perspective through an underaged girl.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I have only read the Wind-Up Bird, Kafka on the Shore, and Sputnik Sweetheart, but that does seem to be a common theme. His books are relaxing, it’s almost like I’m dreaming them instead of reading them. Wind Up Bird in particular
I absolutely love Murakami
He is my favorite authors, even if his books often depress me. Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World got me hooked first…try it if you havent…

Hmm
Reading: I finished this lame book called Word Made Flesh by Jack O’Connell, and now I’m reading the Total Money Makeover by David Ramsey. Not really digging it, but it was a gift, and I said I’d commit to it, unfortunately.
Watching: I just finished watching season five of Weeds, and that’s really about it. I still don’t watch a whole lot of television other than sports, but I’d like to catch up with the rest of the Nip/Tuck seasons.
Playing: Mass Effect 1 – I tend to be behind when it comes to games unless it’s Left 4 Dead or Resident Evil related.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Reading: Sickels’ lastest book. Always a good bathroom reader. I’ll probably add BP to the spring required reading material as well….
Watching: Not much… I catch a movie here and there, but if it’s not sports, I’m probably not watching it on tv (I might on the web though)…
Listening: Rebelution. I can’t wait to see them Wed night in ATL. Bright Side of Life might be my favorite album from 2009… Also, played some Sgt Peppers tonight at work, I gotta say for as much hype as it gets, IMO it doesn’t even compare to Revolver, Abbey Rd or Rubber Soul. A great album for sure, but it gets a bit over-rated at times. And Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde, which isn’t over-rated at all. Just incredible.
Playing: Street Fighter 4… I try not to waste too much time gaming
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

Lol, I wouldn’t call myself a musician but music tends to take up most of my free time. Be it listening to vinyl, cds in my car while at work, playing acoustic and bass guitar, or going to shows. Especially when it’s not baseball season.
I get restless playing video games. I love it in small quantities of time, but I get bored with it quickly. It’s weird because I’m constantly around people who are game addicts, most of my friends, even girls I’ve dated who worked at the video game store. I’m just not that into it.

True
No doubt Olivia Munn is hot, I’d give my left nut, as well as all of all the dudes’ here just to speak to her. Maxim truly failed with their spread of her; it’s like having the bases loaded with nobody out with three Pujolses coming up to bat with Eric Gregg as the ump, and failing to score. Instead of all their horribly touched up photos, they could’ve just given her a camera and been like “go be hot and give this back to us in three weeks.” She’s such a camwhore that the camera would have come back full of images better than what they published.

The most dangerous thing about Olivia Munn is that you can tell she’s 100% self aware of her power over the male universe. And at the same time, she’s capable of thinking like a guy, and a nerdy guy at that, and because it all comes so natural, and not at all well, phony, it serves to purpose her as pretty much the most perfect woman on the planet.

The first 2 seasons of Lost have been the only good ones, but here i am feeling obligated to finish it out because some jerk told me to watch the first episodes.—— It will make you appreciate shows like Law and Order, or CSI. The creators of HIMYM fought the laugh track, but CBS required it. They even said in an interview once that they considered themselves an “NBC” comedy because they dont like to use things like the laugh track.
It’s also really dumb how CBS makes them do the laugh track. They cant film in front of a studio audience because there are so many flashbacks and flashforwards. So, they film the show, edit all the pieces together, and then show the finished product to an audience. Then they record the laughter from that audience for the show.

Doesn’t look like it’s going to be good. And apparently they changed the classic scene to " jacket on, jacket off". That made me sad. Also, I think little Smith (Jayden, right?) is too cute to play the role. He needed to be cute foe something like The Pursuit of Happyness and his whole scene “did they spell fuck correctly?” but he seems too cute to be the karate kid.

I actually really like the new album too, Skeletal Lamping
“An Eluardian Instance” from SL is what I’m addicted to atm…“St. Exquisite” and “For Our Elegant Caste” are good too. “Just Recently Lost Something of Importance” from The Bedside Drama was actually my first favorite oM song.
But McCann is right about albums — if you’re going for whole albums, Gay Parade and Hissing Fauna are probably where you start.
James Husband is actually a band fronted by one of the guys from oM. It’s pretty good too, if you can find it. Sorta like a less crazy version of oM.

I would love some of your recommendations though!

Well, check out the He Is We link I posted above. Also, as far as acoustic stuff goes:
City and Colour – The Death of Me
Kevin Devine – All of Everything, Erased
Iron and Wine – Cinder and Smoke
Death Cab for Cutie – Title and Registration
Bon Iver – Skinny Love
As far as some indie-ish bands (I use the term loosely, not really sure how to classify some of these guys):
The Avett Brothers – I and Love and You
Jack’s Mannequin – Bruised
Band of Horses – Great Salt Lake
Arcade Fire – Wake Up
Let me know if there are any of those in particular that you like, this goes for everyone, and I can point you in the right direction of other goods songs, albums, bands. I love talking music, so let’s hear what you think!

Passing Afternoon is really good too. I finally just got into I&W and Cinder and Smoke is my favorite so far which is why I posted it. Can’t really go wrong with anything on that album.

I randomly picked up this one on a whim at my local recordstore: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_6/20/05_%28album%29
Turns out its hard to find, was only released in Indie record stores. Anyway, the live version of Upward over the Mountain is literally one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard.

nice recommendations. What do you think of The Postal Service (band that had DCFC’s lead singer)?
"Batting second and playing shortstop-he's Cuban. Yeah, his name's Pablo...no, eh, Yunel Escobar, sorry"
One of the best albums ever, IMO. A part of me wants them to get back together and write some more stuff, but another part of me doesn’t because it’s pretty much impossible to top Give Up and whatever they put out would be a let down.

Good call
I’ve never really considered it one of the best ever (but I haven’t listened to its entirety in a while.) As I look it over right now I completely agree. I’m content with DCFC so i’m good with them not coming back, but would be awesome.
What about Dispatch?
"Batting second and playing shortstop-he's Cuban. Yeah, his name's Pablo...no, eh, Yunel Escobar, sorry"
I was not a fan of DCFC’s Narrow Stairs, but The Open Door EP has literally 4 of their best songs ever. Have you heard it?
I like Dispatch although I only have a few songs. The General, Out Loud, Hey Hey (favorite), Flying Horses, Mayday, and Elias.

Lets see- The Open Door EP: I’ve heard it, and I like it, although my favorite, I’d lean to Plans there, but probably number 2.
I think I’d consider Dispatch one of, if not my favorite bands; and I definitely recommend the song Two Coins from Bang Bang
"Batting second and playing shortstop-he's Cuban. Yeah, his name's Pablo...no, eh, Yunel Escobar, sorry"
Plans is fantastic. “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” is one of my favorites. I’d have to go with Transatlanticism as my #1 album of theirs though.

I completely agree about the TBS New Again album. I think Fred leaving really hurts them more than they think. Definitely now in the process of downloading the Emery discography to check them out. I have two Saosin albums already including the self titled one that includes It’s Far Better to Learn. Never really liked Silverstein for some reason.
Some of my other favorites on a punk/poppier note are Starting Line, Punchline, FOB, All Time Low, and I grew up on Blink 182.
Cockchafer
Every since John Nolan left they’ve been in decline. Tell All Your Friends was one of those albums that redefined music for me. I really, really enjoyed Where You Want to Be and thought that Fred was a pretty good successor. Not really a fan of anything else they’ve done. Can’t remember if Fred left after WYWTB or not.
I personally think Emery’s newest album is there best, but The Question is full of good tracks too. Alot of people think their first album is their best though (“Walls” and “Ponytail Parades” are classics) but I would stay away from I’m Only a Man.
When it comes to pop-punk you’ve got to check out two bands: 1) Valencia, 2) The Dangerous Summer:
Valencia – Safe to Say
The Dangerous Summer – Reach for the Sun
Alot of people relate them to The Starting Line. Pretty sure each band only has one album and I highly recommend you pick them both up.

Valencia is really good, they have two albums, the second is called This Could Be a Possibility and I have them both. My cousin turned me on to them.
Cockchafer
TAYF, DE, and TTtYG are all some of my favorites as well. Not so much YFW, but there’s some real great tracks on that.
I’m trying to think what other albums I would put up with those three. I’m assuming you listen to Saves the Day? Bayside? Alkaline Trio? Relient K?
Glad to hear you like Valencia. Make sure you check out The Dangerous Summer, you’ll thank me later.

If you like that song by Jack’s Mannequin I suggest you buy Everything In Transit immediately.. A perfect album IMO. Here’s some more songs by him:
http://www.purevolume.com/JacksMannequin
“The Mix Tape”, “Bruised”, “MFEO / You Can Breathe”, and “Into the Airwaves” all come from that album. The rest of the songs come off his more recent release The Glass Passenger which I found to be a total disaster aside from 2-3 songs. Alot of his fans loved it though, so who knows maybe you’ll like it.

Well unfortunately I haven’t been able to buy any of their full albums yet, just a few different songs from iTunes. My favorites are Distraction #74 from Four Thieves Gone and Sanguine, When I Drink, and If It’s the Beaches from the EP The Gleam. If you aren’t a fan of country I would recommend The Gleam, I think it’s more of a modern folk sound.
Also for anyone who likes the Avett Brothers and would like a more bluegrassy sound (but still more folk than bluegrass), I would recommend Old Crow Medicine Show. A great, great band also from NC I believe.
+1 on OCMS. I love my bluegrass songs about cocaine.
And if people are interested in indie bluegrass & country-esqe songs,
Uncle Tupelo
Wiskeytown
The Jayhawks
Wilco’s first album, Being There
and for poppier country I love me some Old 97’s.

As far as He Is We goes the two bands that I find similar are Straylight Run and Lydia. Both have a male lead singer, but a female counterpart that is included on almost every song and many times will take the lead.
Straylight Run – Buttoned Down
Lydia – This Is Twice Now
Other bands that you should be listening to:
The Shins – Saint Simon
The Decemberists – Engine Driver
Fun – The Gambler
It’s hard with alot of these bands because they can cover so many differents sounds (especially guys like the three directly above) that posting only one song could turn someone off simply because they might not like that song, you know? Let me know what you think.

I really liked the Straylight Run and The Decemberists songs. I like The Shins sound, but not the song. I did not care for the Lydia or Fun songs. I was pumped at the beginning of the Fun song (I love piano), but the rest of it, not so much. I really appreciate you digging throught the archives for me. I will be spending some time on i-tunes and purevolume tonight for sure. I guess I need to start giving some of the indie and alternative folks a shot. I was being pretty closed minded about it and classified them all in a “not gonna” category and that wasn’t very fair. You’ve opened my eyes SB, Thanks alot!

Check out that site. You can listen to any song once for free, and then after that you can pay $0.10 to save it to a playlist where you can listen to it from any computer as many times as you like. You can also apparently buy MP3s off the site at what look to be reduced prices as opposed to itunes, but I haven’t tried it out yet.
I normally give any album that’s been recommended to me a once over on Lala before plunking down the money on itunes like I used to do blindly. Saved me quite a bit of money.
I highly recommend you give The Shins another shot especially if you like their sound…it might have just been the wrong song for you. Chutes Too Narrow and Wincing the Night Away are both terrific albums. I didn’t much care for Oh Inverted World, but alot of people think it’s their best.
You might also like some of the other Fun songs on their album Aim & Ignite. It was probably my 2nd favorite album of last year.
Glad I got you to change your mind on some of these new bands. You’d be amazed at how many of them incorporate sounds of the past with their current sounds to produce something entirely unique. Keep digging around and let me know if you find anything good!

Quick question: If all my music is on I-tunes and I download the He is We song from pure volume, will it automatically go to my i-tunes on the ’puter?
by I Saw Buzz Beaned on Feb 19, 2010 4:00 PM EST up reply actions
No, it will download to your “download” folder so what you’ll want to do is this:
1. Open two separate windows…one your download folder, the other your itunes music folder
2. Create a He Is We folder in your itunes music folder, and a subfolder in that for the album title (I just titled mine “misc” since they don’t have an proper album name)
3. Drag the downloaded songs from the “download” folder into your newly created “misc” sub-folder in your itunes music folder.
4. Open itunes and go to the “import new folder” option and select the “He Is We” folder.
That’s what I did and it works perfectly. Someone a little more computer savvy than myself might know of an easier way though.

Ok, Here you go....
I dig late ’60’s, ’70’s and ’80’s rock R&B and southern rock. All the regular stuff like Skynyrd, Zepplin, AC/DC, Allman Brothers, America, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, BOC, CDB, Deep Purple, Def Leppard Dire Straits, ARS, Badfinger and Little Feat. (As you can see, I was scanning artists as I went. My memory is so bad that I had to use the Ipod as a reference for what I like).
Some of the more obscure stuff that I like are, The Henry Paul Band, Mother’s Finest, April Wine, The Zombies, The Animals, Warren Zevon, and The Wet Willie Band. That should give you a taste of what I like. Anything new that is along these lines???

Since you like Southern Rock
you might want to give Drive-By Truckers a try. They are from Alabama and did a concept album telling the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd (Southern Rock Opera). They are kind of hit-or-miss, have produced some gems and some crap.
If you have a way to buy individual songs, get any of their songs that Mike Cooley wrote. He is by far the best writer/singer of the group.
Big fan of Truckers...
so I know the backstory. Was just saying, while they are sons of former Muscle Shoals studio artists, they are “from” Athens these days. Their shows at the 40 Watt are routinely mind blowing.
Ah I see

Was disappointed in Extract
The reason Office Space clicked with so many is the simple fact that so many have had menial office jobs, and there was a character for almost everyone to relate to. Not so much with Extract – not nearly as many can relate to a moderately-successful company founder going through a midlife crisis and gets to bang Mila Kunis. Except maybe for the overbearing nosy neighbor, which was the best part of the entire film.
If Kristen Bell had different eyes, I think I’d like her more. She’s got this kinda beady look that weirds me out sometimes. Then again, I always tend to favor the large, doe-eyed looks, like Mila Kunis.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Well obviously it isn’t as funny as Office Space but I was pleasantly surprised. If Jason Bateman wasn’t in the movie it wouldn’t have been nearly as funny. The part when he’s talking about how fragile life can be and then says “especially our balls…they’re just hanging there” had me laughing uncontrollably.

Castle is a bestselling mystery author. In the first episode, his newest book is published and in it he kills off his main character. Think Patricia Cornwell killing off Kay Scarpetta. He ends up with writers block and isn’t sure what he’s going to do next. Through his celebrity he is allowed to follow a darn nice looking female NYC homicide detective around to gather information for his next book. He of course ends up being instrumental in solving the detective’s cases and there is of course sexual tension between the two. Castle has a daughter lives with him and is the most mature person in the show. His mother also lives with him and provides more comic relief.
Its not a bad show really, but Nathan Fillion really is the reason to watch.

Currently reading: Mostly manga like Naruto and Bleach. I picked up the latest Wheel of Time book back in November and read it in two weeks…pretty good considering I have been working close to 60 hours/wk since August.
Currently watching: Don’t watch much tv, but I do love PTI, most home improvement shows and I’m still watching Heroes & Smallville (though I wish the Heroes was actually good and had better writers).
Currently playing: Mass Effect 2. I have to agree, it’s one of the best games evar! Even my wife has been pissed at how much xbox I’ve been playing lately. Hard to stop playing. The only thing I don’t like is how you only get experience after the mission is complete. So I can be killing 30 bad guys and get the same experience as if I was a bit faster and whipped through it killing only 15. Still it beats having to spend hours leveling up like in JRPGs.
Yeah, I was kinda bummed that they stripped away alot of the RPG elements from ME1 but the game is so good on it’s own merits that it’s really hard to complain. I hope they strike a nice balance in the third one.

I couldn’t put down ME2 as soon as I started playing. I’ve even gone back and started a new character in ME1 to then bring over to ME2 again. And yeah, I like the smooth combat now, but they did get rid of a lot of the good RPG elements. I definitely didn’t care for the planet scanning either. That’s very tedious.

Planet scanning doesn’t bother me as much as it seems to some people. But I’m going to do the same thing you said…start a paragon in ME1 so that I can import into ME2. Just waiting to get a copy of ME1 from my friend when he’s done.

I’ve gotten to the point now where I just turn on some music while I do the scanning. The first time, I held in the Left Trigger the whole time, which was slow. This time through, I’m trying to get through the planet scanning quicker. Being a little more random with how I’m scanning.
And yeah, I beat ME1 about 3 or 4 times, but I never could use a biotic. This last time, I went that route, and it was so much fun.

I also saw earlier somebody recommended A History of the American People. So I went and purchased that too. Oh yeah, I also do my hourly reading on TC.

AC2 was pretty damn good imo. You’ll have to let me know how Ghostbusters is, I don’t know anyone that has played it, but it’s gotten some good reviews.
I really want to get The Show, but I’ve never played a good baseball game. Bout the only good sports games are Hockey and Soccer.
Ghostbusters
I’ve played it. It’s pretty good. But near the end, I was just ready for it to be over with. But overall, it was better than I thought it would be. It even made me want to go back and watch the movies.

Ghostbusters is cool so far. Not very far into it...
I’ve heard good things from folks, and I’m enjoying it, but I have a recurring thought that it could somehow be better.

Listening: Lately been listening to alot of guilty pleasure music like “Hit the Lights” and “All Time Low”. “Polar Bear Club” def rips. Always have the classics to fall back on, Metallica’s Garage Inc has been shredding my pod recently. Great album.
Playing: Just beat “Mario and Luigi in Bowser’s Inside Story” for DS which is an amazing RPG if ur into that sort of thing. Getting back into the new Zelda “Spirit Tracks” after a brief hiatus. Actually been playing Castlevania “Symphony of the Night” which is one of my favorite games of all time.

Fellow Breaking Bad fan, very nice. I’ve only seen the first season and haven’t found anywhere to watch the second so I’m waiting for the DVDs next month.

Reading: Philip Fradkin’s examination of the intersection of history, culture and geology in California, Magnitude 8: Earthquakes and Life Along the San Andreas Fault. I just finished reading Neal Conan’s Play by Play: Baseball, Radio and Life in the Last Chance League, about the summer he took a sabbatical from his thirty-year career at NPR News to become a minor-league baseball announcer. Both are great reads.
Watching: I don’t watch too much TV, and most of the little I do watch is on DVD. Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Frontline, Archer, The West Wing and perennial favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Playing: My bass clarinet, but I suspect that’s not what you meant.

I despise Parks and Recreation, mostly because NBC decided to keep only one of it and My Name is Earl, and it ended up winning out.
Shouldn't Reid Gorecki get a shot in RF before that Heyward kid everybody talks about?
I tried watching the first ep of P&R and found it to be nothing but an Office ripoff. However, one Bigjoe told me that it actually got to be pretty funny.

Didn’t like her on SNL, but I’ve always loved her since Upright Citizen’s Brigade. I can see how she would annoy people, but P&R is doing a lot better in it’s second season.
I loved UCP too. And it is a complete office ripoff, nobody can argue that. It certainly has hit a few rough spots, but overall I like it

Fair enough. Greg Daniels, co-creator of Parks, also helped make the US version of The Office, so that might account for their similarities.

So I just saw Shutter Island
Hell of a movie. A little bit long, but Scorsese struck gold on this one. And Leo Dicaprio will surely be in the running for Actor of the Year after his performance. Great supporting cast as well and a story and message that’ll have you thinking throughout the whole movie and even after you see it. It’s obviously not as good as The Departed, but it was still very, very well done.
Omar Minaya is my hero!
am I the only one who thought the Departed was overrated??
Not even close to being the best of Scorcese.
"If I have asthma, they won't let me scuba. And if I can’t scuba, then what’s this all been about?? What am I working toward??"
No, I actually thought it sucked. There have been about a hundred better gangster movies, never mind movies in general, and Scorcese has made several of them.

Yeah, just did not like it. I guess I felt like I’d seen the same folks do all the same things in 20 other movies and they’d done it better before. Just wasn’t good enough for all the people they had. It’s a fine movie I guess, so maybe it doesn’t outright suck, but yeah, not a fan. Although Vera Farmiga goes a long way with me.

I’m sure they got some hot women on Lifetime movies too (before they get beat on), doesn’t mean I’m watching ‘em. Katherine Heigl was on Grey’s Anatomy, doesn’t mean I’ll watch that either. If you’re watching for the woman and not interested in sappy, crap storylines, may I suggest Univision?
Although I will admit watching a little Dawson’s Creek in my younger days. But Gilmore Girls wouldn’t exactly fit that bill (in multiple hot ones) or “younger days”.

Drifting
After reading most of the posts I am so impressed to see people reading….something more than Facebook, My space and a plethera of decadent mind fodder…
Uhhhhhh! I have not read a book in about eight years, unless you count “Thomas the Tank engine” or “Lama Lama” series reading but I do read to my child from those….He tends to get bored more quickly when I read the sports page to him!
MOVIE
When my parents came for a visit (can you say babysitter?) my misses and I went to see “The book of Eli”….I would have to say it now ranks as one of my favorite “Post Apotolyptic” movies…..right up there with Matrix series (yes it was a PA movie).
TV, Vanderbilt Basketball, Olympics and a little American Idol.
Listning to…..this morning to Paul Weller on the CD in my car…but Channel 22, 23, 24 sometimes 15 and 13 (gotta love a little Elvis) my Satellight radio.
Vanderbilt Basketball
That was a good game against Kentucky. Looked more like a Big 10 game though. UK was just too much in the end.
I hate Kentucky and Calipari’s cheating ass.

(I will be in deep pain for the next few days)
Well, see them next year..(w/o punk cousins or Wall ..one and gone to NBA for them)…..or the SEC tourney which is in Nashville again but not at Memorial.
….Coach Brillcream Calipari did pay a nice compliment to Vandy’s coach (Stallings) and Team…he said what you saw tonight was a “Great 8 game”..but after Vandys break down in the last minutes/seconds Stallings will see to it that they are final four ready….DAMN I hate Kenfucky…sorry for the mispell
I dont like Wall either
but the dude can straight up play. IF my Sactown Kings were to get the number 1 pick in the draft and get Wall, we’d be beastly. But that’d be the only reason I like him.

by Scott Coleman on Feb 21, 2010 2:05 AM EST up reply actions
agree
I guess I would feel the same way….but KY basketball might stain him blue…the Kings are purple or blue?…it might blend in a little I guess?…hee hee
Do you really think Evans and Wall could coexist? It seems like you guys should go after a quality big man/small forward but I don’t really know your roster very well. Although I guess with K mart gone you need a guard.
The Jordan Schafer Fan Club.
oh hell ya I'd love a good big man
but who would we take? Ed Davis? Demarcus Cousins? Derrick Favors from GT? None of those guys sound great to me with the possible exception of Favors. I’d bet a dollar that we’d take one if we dont get the #1 pick. Carl Landry from Houston is an animal and Spencer Hawes and Jason Thompson show flashes of greatness on offense, but neither can defend in the paint one bit.
We’re set on the wings, although Evan Turner from Ohio State is a monster. Omri Casspi and Donte Greene have both played really well in their first full seasons.
I do think Evans and Wall would work well. Neither can shoot very well, but both get to the rim at will. Wall is also much more of a true PG, while Reke is more of a combo guard. Both are lock-down defenders — which is obviously a must in the West — and as long as we surrounded them with good perimeter shooters, they’d work great in our system.
Ahhh…I love my Kings. I can’t wait til we dominate like we did in the early 2000’s. At least this time we know the refs won’t be cheating us out of a title.

I need to really iron out my baseball trips for the 2010 season, I’ve discussed so many maybes, but so few are actually ironed down. I suppose
I really enjoyed others like Mushroom Men, Zelda, etc. With that said — Ill never get tired of Mario (which is why I said it depends on what kind of gamer you are)…
I also love the Virtual Console. It’s the single best part of the Wii.
The Wii just happens to match me — the types of games the other consoles are really good at (FPS, sports, etc.) are generally the ones I don’t play. The only two games not on the wii I’ve wanted to play were Little Big Planet and Arkham Asylum. I played LBP at a friend’s place and was massively disappointed. And I’m currently playing AA at someone’s place, so not big deal there.
With all that said, I recognize that I am not a typical gamer…
"If I have asthma, they won't let me scuba. And if I can’t scuba, then what’s this all been about?? What am I working toward??"
We're twins!
Zelda nerd here, so i’ll always be loyal to Nintendo. And the Metroid Prime games were a blast to play too.
"Matt Diaz is a baseball player."-Joe Simpson
yeah
I guess you could look at it that way. But I just find that as time goes on, I become less of a gamer. So when I actually do play something, I just want something fun. Not necessarily realistic. While the games on the 360 and ps3 look amazing and seem fun, idk, I just like the party style, and old school seeming games of the Wii. The fact I can’t afford a big HDTV doesn’t help either lol. I’ve played all 3 and just had more fun the little bit I’ve played the Wii.
