Fantasy Catcher Rankings + Brian McCann discussion.

Roto Authority posted their top 25 catcher rankings and our very own Brian McCann is on the list. Here is the top 10:

  1. Joe Mauer (2) - $30.33
  2. Brian McCann (4) - $23.19
  3. Victor Martinez (3) - $20.43
  4. Matt Wieters (9) - $17.41
  5. Russell Martin (12) - $16.85
  6. Mike Napoli (15) - $15.67
  7. Geovany Soto (13) - $13.65
  8. Kurt Suzuki (12) - $12.72
  9. Ryan Doumit (18) - $10.80
  10. Jorge Posada (10) - $10.30

Star-divide

Nice to see Brian getting some love and respect in terms of being one of the better catchers in all of MLB and that brings me to my next subject.

I have read a lot of reports saying that because of Brian's knee's he probably would not be able to endure being a catcher for the entirety of his career and probably need to be moved to 1B. How accurate is this?

Everyone knows that Freddie Freeman is seen by the club as the future 1B and he is also a Gold Glover with power potential to get up to 30+ HR's a year based off of his frame. So if Freeman is at 1B what do we do then? We do have Christian Bethancourt in the wings and while he is no sure thing if he grows to be a great prospect do you guys think the team would trade McCann?? Or is all of this about him needing to play 1B in the future blown out of proportion?

Thoughts?

i’m no expert by any means, but i believe that, if bethancourt turns out to be a stud, the braves would move mccan to first and trade freeman. thats just my opinion

Unlikely.

What about moving Freddie to 3rd?

Honestly,...

how fast is Bethancourt ready? How long does McCann stay healthy enough to be productive? If it ever becomes a problem, as cb says, it’s a pretty good problem to have. But trying to make it a problem with the amount of what ifs involved seems futile.

I agree. I am just curious as to whether or not Freeman could potentially replace Chipper – not necessarily related to Bethancourt or McCann.

Hypothetical time:

1. Freeman is ready
2. Cody Johnson learns plate discipline
3. Chipper retires

Do you do it? I know I would!

If they expected Cody to play 1B...

they’d have never moved him off it and into the OF. Same goes for Freeman and 3B imo. I know, Gilmore, but it’s not like we couldn’t have put one in Danville and the other in Orlando, and let them both play 3rd to see who develops from there.

If we’re looking at internal 3B options, the best appear to be Jones, Hicks, Sanchez, and Linares. Or of course there is the possibility of drafting one this summer, or getting one in return through trade like for McLouth.

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 11, 2010 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

This. If they thought Freeman could play 3B he’d already be there. As far as Cody and 1B, I think they figured he was athletic enough for the OF and that he’d have more value out there than just as a 1B. And, while he’s average or below average in the OF (way below if you don’t like him because of his strikeouts) he is athletic enough for it. My guess is that if a situation arose where Cody needed to become a first baseman, he’d be just fine there.

But what would be easier cb...

letting him develop as a 1B, then move him to LF or develop him playing LF and later try to move him back to 1st? I think the transition to the OF would be easier than to move back to 1B. Not that either is impossible though.

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 11, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

That’s a good point, 1B is much more intricate.

I think worrying about how things will play out years from now in a scenario involving players who haven’t even played in the majors yet is a bit of a waste of energy. And, as I always say, having too many good players is a far better problem than having too many bad players.

Like seeing Wieters getting some love. That kid is a hell of a player and a genuinely good person.

But #4 among C's?...

I know fantasy is different from real life, but is the overall pool of Cs so bad offensively that he’s sitting 4th on the list? Personally, I’d have VMart either 1 or 2 because of 1B eligibility and the likelihood he has better offensive stats (except for maybe Mauer of course) in that lineup and without the daily grind of C.

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 11, 2010 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

I mean, I don’t know anything about fantasy baseball, other than it’s for nerds, but I’d take Wieters over all those guys after him on the list. And, if I understand what a keeper league is, I might take him ahead of everyone but Mauer.

You callin me a nerd?...

And the others on the list aren’t enticing either. Finding a decent C for fantasy production is pretty tough, mostly I just try to find guys that aren’t drains.

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 11, 2010 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

I’m shocked Russell Martin is ranked that high given his slide last year. I’ve owned him for three years straight in a keeper league, and after 2 great years he burned me last year. If he’s still considered that much of a commodity, it really does speak to the lack of overall offensive depth at catcher.

He killed 2 of my teams last year…luckily, on my 3rd team, I had Heap.

I don't know about VMart at #1 or #2

He certainly plays in a nice lineup and can hit, but the Sox will play Varitek more than the average backup catcher. And with the signing of Beltre, Martinez won’t get much 1B time as Youkilis, Beltre, Lowell and Ortiz will eat up most of the CI and DH AB’s. I don’t know what extra 1B eligibility does for a catcher in fantasy either.

by cavebird on Feb 11, 2010 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

My prediction

Lowell is gone before ST is over and Ortiz will be benched long before June. You can bet money that Boston will get at least 500 PA’s out of VMart, whether it’s as a DH, 1B or catcher IDK but it will happen.

You aren’t the czar of typographic emphasis

by scstrato on Feb 11, 2010 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

That's my thinking...

Varitek’s age , their desire to get rid of Lowell for pennies on the dollar (Max Ramirez isn’t bad, but come on) and Ortiz decline gives Martinez at least 500 PAs, which for a C is pretty high. I’d think unless Ortiz returns to form, he gets the biggest share of DH ABs.
