Schafer says he needs to grow, turns to Nixon for advice
I wasn't able to make it to the Caravan stop in Chattanooga yesterday, but here's a column and a video about it.
The audio interview with the Jordan Schafer (on the column page) is interesting to me because of the praise Schafer heaps on Nixon. He mentioned the two of them meeting at a furniture store and said he was going to meet up with Nixon later this spring to work on the mental side of the game. Schafer admits that he is ready skill wise, but mentally he needs to grow and mature. He said he always looked up to Otis and work on the stuff "between the ears."
It's an interesting pairing to me. Both are speedy centerfielders who have had problems with drugs (though HGH or whatever Schafer was accused of is obviously different than Nixon's cocaine addiction). But Nixon is now working on a master in divinity and started a ministry. Maybe this could be good for Schafer.
As far as the caravan, apparently Otis was the big draw. Video has him, Jojo and Schafer on camera as well as a replay of "The Catch."
The first people in line got there at 2 p.m. for the 5:30 caravan. Doesn't look as packed as some of the Atlanta area events, but still a good crowd. Have the Rome Braves logos been prominent at all of the events or did they do more of that because Rome is only about an hour south of the 'Noog?
It's also got a fairly funny story about a kid who went by the name Otis Nixon at Bible school in the mid 1990s.
Full disclosure: I work for the newspaper

I don't want to cast any aspersions on Nixon
Looks like he’s got his past problems behind him, so I don’t see this hurting anything.
Just hope John Rocker isn't out there looking for someone to mentor
remember the Will Ferrell doing John Rocker SNL skit?

I don’t think Schafer ever had a drug problem, of course, thats what he gets to be labeled with for his career. He just got caught physically with some goods in his bag or something (thanks to someone telling), they never found anything in his system.
I stand by my theory that it is all Carl Loadenthal’s faught.

I don’t think he got caught with anything. There was a rumor started and that’s all they need in the Minors because there’s no union. They’re not even required to investigate or prove anything.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it: https://www.createspace.com/3407939

His story
I think his story was that he hung out with the wrong crowd and was busted because of what they did. We may never know the truth.

Can't hurt, I guess.

unfettered mind
The best thing anyone can do to improve the mental aspect of their game…any game, but especially baseball, is read the unfettered mind…it consists of letters from a zen master to a master swordsman and is the foundation of the zen swordplay characteristic of the samurai…I bet ichiro has read it ha…but there is a reason baseball caught on in a zen culture…batting and pitching are hugely benefitted by its study
Advice on how to mix the baking soda in at just the right time?
How to steal bases for a coach who refuses to run?
How to slap hit off 70s astro turf stadiums?
I’d feel more comfortable if he was talking to Grady Sizemore about how to put his doodads in a tea cup…..
What a douche thing to say. Did you even read what he said. The kid is making an effort to improve & is seeking help from one of the players he looked up to on the MENTAL approach to big league baseball. So the crap you mentioned are non issues.
Agreed.

ZING! .......and someone takes the bait!
I was wondering how for down I’d have to read before I saw this. Actually got pretty far, I’m surprised
maybe he could teach Schafer how to lead off (mentally)….
Pujols is NOT God.... sure he'll hit .350, hit 50 bombs, and drive in a 125....but then again...so will Heyward..

This is a plus in my book, in my opinion, as opinionated as it is, we haven’t had a true leadoff hitter since Otis.
Marquis Grissom?
I thought he led off our WS team?
only if they are bunt singles like Furcal mastered.
