Braves Rule 5 Draft Comings And Goings
The Braves lost one player in this morning's Rule 5 draft. Left-handed pitcher Scott Diamond was selected by the Twins. Diamond would have been ranked 24th overall in Talking Chop's top-25 Braves prospects (being released next week), and he was ranked as the 6th-best left-handed starter in the Braves system. That goes to show you the depth of the Braves pitching in the minor league system. Diamond was a nice prospect, but one the Braves could afford to lost.
The Braves did not select anyone in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft, but they did select two pitchers in the minor league phase. They took 28-year old lefty reliever Rowdy Hardy from the Royals and 22-year old righty reliever Eliecer Cardenas from the Twins. Hardy has not pitched above AA, while Cardenas has not pitched above A-ball. A couple of minor players that I guess the Braves have a good feeling about. We'll see.
Too bad the Braves couldn't protect Diamond. There is still a 40-man roster spot being occupied by Billy Wagner, who has yet to file his retirement papers. The Braves will not remove him from the roster until he does so, in order to protect them against another team signing Wags out of retirement. I'd love to know what the hold up is, as it just cost us a promising young pitcher, but if Wagner does somehow decide to return next year I'll give up a dozen Diamonds for that.

touche to Minnesota and Kansas City — now the Bravos take one each of their players. :D

Wouldn't it be something if Wags came back?
I mean, I know there’s about a 0.0000001% chance of that actually happening, but our pen would be disgusting in 2011 if he changes his mind.
Either way…congrats to Diamond on going to the show. Hope it works out well for him.

Am I the only one hoping it doesnt happen?
Wouldn’t it put us over our budget? I cant remember how much he would make but I know it would be more than what we have left.
I guess in the grand scheme of things, we can always work those details out.

About to get rid of KK. With the current staff plus Wags, we’re set. I’d take Wags over a utility guy right now because we have lots of guys that can play multiple positions. So KK’s salary (minus what we’ll send to Pitt) plus what we have now for role players should be enough to sign him.

Kawakami's ouster isn't going to be a financial coup by any means.
We’ll be lucky to save even $5 mil.

I’m with you, but there’s just no way. FW has said they’ve all been twisting his arm all offseason, PEMO’s been emailing him once a week, and its all to no avail.

What are the requirements on the drafting team
for the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft?
And who is exposed to it?
From what I understand it’s similar to the major league portion, but it’s for players who haven’t been promoted above AA or A. The requirement is that the drafting team has to keep the player in the next highest level of their minor league system (AAA if the player was drafted from AA, AA if drafted from A) for the entire next season.
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.
No, actually, in the Minor League phase, the player taken becomes the new team’s property with no restrictions on where he plays. They can put him at any level.
The players who are eligible are based on the same rules as for the Major League phase, they have to have enough service time, and then the team protects guys from the AAA phase by putting them on the AAA roster, and from the AA phase by putting them on the AA roster.
So any eligible player not on the 40 man can be selected in the Major League phase, any eligible Minor Leaguer not on the AAA roster can be selected in the AAA phase, any eligible player not on the AAA roster or the AA roster can be selcted in the AA phase.

But someone selected in the AAA or AA phase...
doesn’t have to stay on the AAA or AA roster?

No, they don’t.

Interesting...
I guess the caliber of player in it just isn’t that high then considering the risk involved of losing a prospect.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
It’s rare that a guy taken in the Minor League phase actually makes it to the Majors. It’s rare enough that they even make a 40 man roster.

Hopefully BIlly realizes that 2011 already has the potential to be VERY special..
considering how far we made it this year.
Maybe one of his kids is a Braves fanatic and convinces him to pitch for one more year. This is the only way I see him coming back. Personally, I wouldn’t want to walk away the way it happened for him, and he’s close to holding a record or two, as well.
I just hope Billy knows that everyone wants him back. And if KK goes to the Pirates, it would only make that much more sense.

I would like to see Wags back as well but surely the Brave had this conversation with him before the traded for Linebrink. I am afraid it is just wishfull thinking.

I would like to think if he hasnt filed the papers, that maybe he is reconsidering, or hasnt fully comitted himself to retirement. If he has made up his mind for certain, and just hasnt gotten around to filing I’m a little peeved that he made us lose a player. Its kind of thoughtless on his part.
Wags is not reconsidering.
Wren, I think, stated the other day that they had tried everything to convince him to change his mind, but that it wasn’t going to happen. As for the loss of Diamond, it is not a big loss, he clearly wasn’t in our future plans, we have too many superior pitchers either already here or on their way.
Maybe Wagner’s retirement was a ploy by FW to get LM to shell out $8M more for next year. After everyone is signed for next year and the money is already committed, Wagner pops out of retirement, picks up his paycheck, his ring and calls it a day!
I’ve already said too much…
"I have a dream that one day our twelve pitchers will one day play in a city where they will not be judged by statistics but by the quality and consistancy of their pitches." - MLK, Jr.
Even if Wags had turned in his paper work...
that doesn’t mean Diamond would have been protected.

Count ’em for yourself. I count 39, including Wags. We had room to protect Diamond if we wanted to do so.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
I'll take your word for it.
But why would we leave a spot on the 40-man empty? Surely there is a reason, but I’m not hip enough to that scene to see it.

Color me rather skeptical about Wagner coming back
but if he were to, that would really cement the bullpen for next year. Plus it allows Kimbrel another year to adjust into the closer role.

We should have a thread for bad rosterbation ideas and just post the worst ideas ever there….that would be loads of fun.

We do...
it’s our regular rosterbation thread. Plenty of laughable ideas in there.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
there has to be at least a slim chance
otherwise don’t you think the Braves would have just said “Billy can you file so we don’t lose a player”
I mean I know they respect the guy and all, but it would be bad business to lose an asset just to play nice.
Maybe...
He’d be open to coming back mid-season, if trouble should befall the bullpen…but doesn’t this mean he’s still technically owed all these monies currently??
-C
It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
There would probably be a settlement deal if he jumps in midstream, probably something that pays him the prorated portion of the 6M I think he would have been under contract for. But I think that scenario is even less likely than him simply coming out of retirement with the intent to pitch the whole year. It just ain’t happening.
ATTENTION CITIZENS: DAN UGGLA IS NOT A THIRD BASEMAN. That is all.
Clear it up
Why would we leave an empty slot on the 40 man?
Ignorance
Forgive the possible stupidity, but for instance, couldn’t the Braves put Diamond on the 40 man and removed him when the UTIL comes aboard?
Technically yes, but he’d have to pass through waivers to come off the 40 man again, so you either expose him to the Rule 5 Draft, or you expose him to waivers. Either way he’d be vulnerable, so adding then immediately re-subtracting him doesn’t solve anything.
ATTENTION CITIZENS: DAN UGGLA IS NOT A THIRD BASEMAN. That is all.
There is a waiver fee of $50,000, so if a team claims your player you get paid that. The reason why you’d rather expose a guy to the Rule 5 than waivers is that the Rule 5 Draft has all those caveats, you have to keep him on the 25 man roster all year, while waivers lets you just have a guy, and you can option him and play him wherever you want.

Ah- makes sense to me. Thanks for the enlightenment.
Here’s a different question. Why do we have to eat so much of KK’s contract? Look at Kevin Correia, Aaron Harang for examples. I just don’t know why we have to eat 5m to move a valuable, if not great SP.
It’s at least partially because everyone knows our hands are tied, so they can demand that we eat money. If he was a planned part of our rotation, the figure we’d have to eat would be either smaller or non-existent.
ATTENTION CITIZENS: DAN UGGLA IS NOT A THIRD BASEMAN. That is all.
Thank you, Bobby.

I was pretty convinced Diamond wasn’t eligible, so this goes to show that the people who do this for a living know more than I do.
I like Hardy, nice guy, good Southern boy. He throws a weird kind of half sidearm and just tosses junk. I saw a game where he was working in the 68-74 range and just owning guys.

I like Hardy too. Could move quickly.
If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

I thought Scott Diamond was an awesome pitcher name.
“the Braves hit the diamond tonight with a fine young pitcher Scott Diamond on the hill …”
Is it realistic to think....
…that if Wags were to come back, our bullpen wouldn’t give up a single run all year?
