Things Read in Others Moms' Basements - Around the NL East 12.25.10

Triomb_logo_medium

Hey you. What are you doing viewing Talking Chop on Christmas? Shouldn't you be with your family or friends, or something holiday-ey like that?

Me? Ha, I'm on pre-scheduled posting. Plenty of rest for the wicked, today. Welcome to another week of Things Read in Other Moms' Basements.

NATIONALS

Rick Ankiel signs one-year deal with Nationals - MLB
You know, as unsatisfactory most of us Braves fans felt towards Rick Ankiel, for the Nationals, this actually isn't a very bad move. One year, $1.5M. Although the article discusses him competing for the LF spot, I actually wouldn't be surprised if he supplants Nyjer Morgan for the starting CF job. Like Morgan, he brings good range and good speed. Despite the numbers and strikeouts, Ankiel still has passable OBP, and most importantly, he has the potential for way more power than Morgan could possibly dream about having.

Star-divide

Reliever Sean Burnett signs two-year extension - WaPo
One of the better relievers on the Nationals, Sean Burnett signs a two-year deal with an option on a third year that can essentially buy out his arbitration years. $3.7M for the two years, and a $250,000 buyout if the option is declined.

Stephen Strasburg ahead of schedule, but nobody's saying it - WaPo
He could feasibly start throwing before Spring Training, and actually start a rehab assignment in middle of the summer, setting him up for an August-September comeback. But nobody's saying anything about it "for Stephen's sake," not to mention the hopes and dreams of all other Nationals fans.

Nationals make earnest effort to acquire Zack Grienke, turned down - WaPo
Personally, I don't think this is that bad for the Nats. The Brewers were asking for a lot from the Natinoals (Zimmermann (the pitcher, with two "n's"), probably Espinosa, and Wilson Ramos, along with a prospect or two), but then Grienke exercised a trade-block to the Nationals, citing the Brewers had a better chance to win, and went to them instead for Alcides Escobar, and three prospects, one of them being Lorenzo Cain.

Baseball America's Top-10 Nationals Prospect list - Baseball America
Naturally, Bryce Harper tops the list, but looking at this list, I see 4-5 names that will likely see big-league time in 2011, be it in the middle, or a cup of coffee in September. Harper will probably get a cup in September, but Espinosa and Ramos will likely be starting players for the big club, and guys like Marrero and possibly Norris could see some time at 1B if the team can't acquire a free agent, I wouldn't even rule out LHP Sammy Solis, either from making a cameo.

Matt Chico DFA'd, sent to AAA, invited to big-league camp - MLB
I have a lot of respect for Matt Chico, who endured some really bad Nationals seasons in 2007 and 2008, being one of the more reliable and dependable pitchers on the team, until elbow injuries shelved him for the better part of the last two seasons. He wouldn't be any better than a fifth starter for most any other team, but if there's ever a guy that deserves a little bit of good fortune, it's Chico.

MARLINS

Ricky Nolasco signs three-year extension with Marlins - MLB
With 54 victories, he is second, all-time in the Marlins record books. At the rate he's going, he should catch and maybe pass Dontrelle Willis' diminutive all-time record of 68 wins by the tail end of next season. The skinny is three years, $26.5M with incentives based on innings pitched.

Baseball America's Top-10 Marlins prospects - Baseball America
The guy number one on the list is one guy to possibly predict seeing in 2011. With the general lack of third-basemen on the Marlins' depth chart, Matt Dominguez should have a logical chance to win the job in Spring Training, unless the Marlins completely 86 him for Super-2 reasons. The book on Dominguez at this moment is that he's more glove than bat, but on a team with the offensive capabilities of Hanley, Stanton, Morrison and Sanchez, he might not be relied upon for offense as primarily.

Best toaster ever, if you're a Marlins fan - Fish Stripes
Would this be considered a good Christmas gift, if you're one of the twelve Marlins fans?

PHILLIES

Canadians still hung up on Roy Halladay, write songs about him - MLB
A country song by a Blue Jays fan about a boy who longs to get a glove with Roy Halladay's autograph on it. Well, it's certainly going to be a lot harder now that he's dominating in Philadelphia instead of Toronto.

Braves snag now former Phillies prospect - Beerleaguer
Pitcher Yohan Flande was released from the Phillies, when they had to make room for a prospect they took from the Nationals in the Rule 5 Draft. The Braves were quick to take Flande to a minor league deal and Spring Training invitation. He spent all of last season in AA-Reading, and started 27 games, going 10-8 with a 4.38 ERA.

With Abobo deal off the table, Phillies look to re-acquire J.C. Romero - Beerleaguer
The guy they let walk after he declined arbitration, now the Phillies need him, since they still don't have a reliable lefty in the bullpen.

METS

It's the holidays, so laugh - The Apple
The only Mets link I've bothered to share is one that of humor, brought to us by The Apple. Naturally, "Mets" and "humor" involve, you guessed it, Oliver Perez. And how he was the original inventor of Million Dollar Cash Drop.

Seriously, I can't wait for opening day.

I’ve been playing MLB2K10 and tinkering with rosters for the last week. I can’t handle it!

I have MLB 2k9 (for Wii) so I can’t update the rosters online, so all the new players are my interpretations of them. I used a mix of fangraphs data and baseball cube scouting reports to create the players sot they are fairly accurate…but it sure was fun to watch virtual Heyward hit .314/.390/.550 with 28 hr in his rookie season.

My “Heyward” is batting in the mid .400’s through about 25 games and has already hit 10 home runs, and my “Freeman” is hitting high .300’s with 6 home runs…either I made them too good or I need to step up the difficulty level. Either way, I am having a great time with it. Oh and Chipper got ALOT better (don’t know how that happened haha) and I’ve noticed I can edit his birth year…sooo tempted to make him born in the 80’s you have no idea!

lol

I’m going to be 15 feet away from Jason Heyward. I might have to restrain myself.

I’m going to the Giants/DBacks game in April! I’m seriously thinking I’ll rock my Heyward jersey and bring a “Heyward’s Better” sign with me. I’ll save you a seat.

You really think Bryce Harper will get a September callup at 18?

No way.

Hey guys, big gulps huh? Alright....welp, see you later!

by ATLandUNC on Dec 25, 2010 6:31 PM EST reply actions

it could happen...

if the Nats get impatient and start drooling over his talent a little to much this summer.(Witch isn’t the most unlikely thing I’ve ever heard.) He needs more time to work on the things about the game that have nothing to do with playing it, like how to conduct yourself in a professional manner and on field etiquette.

Right now he just seems like an overly cocky kid who’s never faced a challenge and is already comparing himself to HOF players. I can’t help but want to punch him in the face every time he speaks.

I want to deny it too

But aside from the Teheran ownage, Harper has done nothing but do what he’s been doing for the last two years, and it’s really hard to ignore. He’s owning up to a lot of the hype, contributing heavily to a squad full of Nationals prospects against other A+, AA, and AAA guys to an AFL championship, and really demonstrated that there hasn’t been a whole lot standing in his way. A lot of us, not excluding myself, want to see him fail a little bit, humbled just a little, to off-set and put him in his place after all the bravado and bold statements, pre-drafting. But he hasn’t really been put down in his place now, and I get the impression the invite to big-league camp is one part curiosity to see how he fares against the best, and one part “time to put him in his place.” The scariest and riskiest outcome of this is if he does do well against the Major League rosters, and justifying to people that he’s not ready yet.

I think at least he gets a September call-up, if anything at all, as a sideshow act in order to really boost Nationals ticket sales, especially if they’re out of contention, which as we all think, stands to be a good chance. No doubt he starts in the minor leagues, because aside from the baseball experience he has to develop, he also needs to learn and progress as life as a professional baseball player. But given the level of baseball skill he’s already demonstrated through 17-18, it’s hard to think just simply age will be excuse enough to keep him down.

Okay

I told myself that I wouldn’t be mean, insinuating, or confrontational on Christmas Day, but on Boxing Day, it’s a different story.

Constructive criticism is something that I actually quite enjoy, but to simply share an opinion that you think I’m a poor writer without any reason or justification, leaves me scratching my head, and curious to what I could possibly be doing to leave that kind of impression, instead of feeling insulted, or discouraged in any way, shape or form. This has me wondering if this is more of a personal issue you have with me, since you share no evidence to as why you think I am a poor writer, not to mention poor grammatical demonstration on your own part. And that’s fine, if you don’t like me, because there are lots of days when I don’t like me either, and it would probably be the easiest way out of this internet confrontation.

But for the sake of having a hand in making me a better writer, tell me, pray tell, why I am a poor writer? I genuinely would like to know your rationale. I’ve got my own hypothesis to why I’m not; after all, I don’t get paid for my contributions, I don’t do this for a professional living, and I use it mostly as a creative outlet for my love of the game of baseball and the Atlanta Braves, in specific. If I deem your reasoning to be accurate and believable, I will contemplate improvement, and quite possibly feel a little inadequate and a little dinged, being called out in a public forum. Otherwise, I conclude that you simply don’t care for me as an anonymous person somewhere else behind a screen in the world, which is fine, and I know to moving forward ignore the opinions and statements from someone who can’t even spell the world “weasel.”

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

1. I’ve always enjoyed this segment. I think it’s one of the more entertaining on the blog. (No offense to the other writers.)
2. I think you’ve been given the gift of a new signature. Kinda like mvhsbball’s. Wear it with pride.
3. (Unrelated). Something about Harper makes me want to see him fall on his face. Is that wrong? From the tallent side of things you know he’s going be a joy to watch.

A baseball diamond is, most simply, the intersecting of four 90-foot baselines, and, most powerfully, the intersecting of seemingly random lives.

I think it’s that eye-black all over his face, seems a bit douchey.

by king of games on Dec 27, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

In regards to Harper

I don’t think it’s wrong to want to see him fail. He’s been brash, bordering arrogant, and making a lot of bold statements, and it’s almost expected that a young prodigy will ultimately hit the wall at the professional level. And like king of games mentions, the outdoorsman way he wears the eyeblack is a little unusual, almost as if he’s got his trademark symbolism already locked up.

There’s also something about a prodigy in relation to “the right way” that makes it seem like Harper must go through the trials and tribulations of minor league development, living in apartments in backwater minor league towns, doing grunt work, and taming the shrews. The supposed threat that he’s going to blow by paying his dues because of the wealth of natural talent he’s demonstrated thusfar is a little threatening to traditionalists who think he needs to take his lumps in the minors first.

But the fact of the matter is that despite all this, he’s doing quite well for himself, and backing up a lot of the bravado to this point, and he could be too good for minor league competition sooner rather than later. Take the age and personal stuff out of the equation and if you were to hear “prospect that hit for high average and power in the AFL against AA and AAA level talent, and skipped rookie ball,” and you would still expect to see this prospect getting at least a September call up. It’s mostly the non-baseball factors and SSS aspect that are ultimately why he’s going to be in the minor leagues at all.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

The funny thing about this comment is that the segment (which I thoroughly enjoy RoyHobbs) doesn’t really require one to be a “good” writer, inherently. It’s a recap of articles from around the NL East and is meant to keep us informed and up to date on the goings-on of the other teams in the league. It’s not like you’re shooting for a Pulitzer, you’re just offering quick summaries on various articles, and it’s all for OUR benefit! Seriously, WTF?
