I'm going to offer my 2 cents on these guys

1 Julio Teheran – When I saw him he was really telegraphing his change, but still getting silly swings against it. I could just tell how raw he was.
2 Freddie Freeman – I’m worried he might strike out a lot, a la Schafer two years ago. Still like his potential a lot.
3 Mike Minor – He’s ahead of Delgado in my book. Minor is a smart and physically talented pitcher – great combo.
4 Craig Kimbrel – Ridiculous.
5 Randall Delgado – Good, but boring. He’s like a not quite as talented or wild version of Teheran.
6 Arodys Vizcaino – Compact, but strong build. Reminds me of Joe Blanton.
7 Carlos Perez – L.O.V.E. this guy. A lefty version of Teheran. I saw him twice and he was filthy both times, still real raw too.
8 Brandon Beachy – I love how he handled himself against the Phillies last year. What a find.
9 Matt Lipka – Haven’t seen him yet, but the numbers look real good.
10 J.J. Hoover – Some call him average, I like him better than most. His frame is so large and there’s great power behind it.
11 Mycal Jones – Infectious positive attitude. I liked his aggressiveness in the field, though he rushed at times. Nice compact powerful swing too. I wish he would bunt more and use his speed.
12 Christian Bethancourt – Not really raw behind the plate, but young. He just needs to mature and play and he’ll be fine.
13 Edward Salcedo – I saw some bad fielding games and that’s sullied my opinion of him. The stroke is there though. Beautiful swing.
14 Andrelton Simmons – My favorite from last year’s draft. Rocket arm, great range, and I really like his approach to the plate. I think he’ll grow into a better hitter.
15 Brett Oberholtzer – Kind of like Randall Delgado in that he’s so good he’s boring. Just does everything right. He just needs innings and he’ll be a good one.
16 Cory Rasmus – Loved seeing him comeback this year. He looked good and comfortable on the mound all year. He will have a huge year in 2011.
17 David Filak – Missed him in Danville, but the folks I talked to said he was everything he was made out to be and more. A real steal in the draft.
18 Steve Kent – Looked good when I saw him, though he didn’t leave too much of an impression.
19 Eric Cordier – Huge guy, lots of power behind his frame.
20 Cory Harrilchak – Strong and quick hands. I like his approach to hitting, and I think he can go far.
21 Tyler Pastornicky – Didn’t get a chance to see him, I may have been talked into ranking him here.
22 Dimaster Delgado – He’ll come back this year, and I think he’ll be better than he was.
23 Joe Leonard – Big dude. I worry a bit about his mobility at third. I didn’t see the power I was hoping for last year.
24 Abraham Espinosa – CB talked me into this one, but the more I look at him, the more I think he might be the next big Latin prospect for Atlanta.
25 Adam Milligan – Nicest guy, but man, I just can’t get over the huge swing and the injuries.

digging your list gondee

even though I think higher of Teheran than you (saw him twice last year and while he ran out of gas at the end, the second game against Mobile he was just straight filthy. he telegraphs that change when he gets tired, i think). I would also put Salceo and Bethancourt above Hoover and Jones b/c of upside.

Another offseason, another top 25

1 Julio Teheran
2 Freddie Freeman
3 Randall Delgado
4 Mike Minor
5 Craig Kimbrel
6 Matt Lipka
7 Brandon Beachy
8 Arodys Vizcaino – great numbers, but scouting reports don’t seem to be equally glowing, and if he continues to be injury prone he’s almost certain to end up in the pen regardless, hurting his ceiling
9 Edward Salcedo – think next year will be far different that this year
10 Carlos Perez
11 Christian Bethancourt – still just tools at this point
12 JJ Hoover
13 Mycal Jones
14 Brett Oberholtzer
15 Andrelton Simmons
16 Tyler Pastornicky – have some hope for his bat, very young for the level
17 David Filak – favorite sleeper, think he could really turn heads
18 Stephen Marek
19 Cory Harrilchak
20 Todd Cunningham
21 Benino Pruneda
22 Joe Leonard – don’t see what all the fuss is about
23 Steve Kent
24 Juan Abreu
25 Hector Garcia

Cory Rasmus, Adam Milligan, and Erik Cordier all still have the potential to make their omissions look foolish, but all have had time in the system and the results simply haven’t supported a lot of faith in them (whether due to injuries or otherwise)

Does nobody like Gosselin?

Saw him play in college, pure hitter.

by ruxsin on Dec 17, 2010 9:05 AM EST reply actions

As a polished college hitter, I’d like to see him do well at higher levels before I put him on the list. His physicality doesn’t blow me away, but he does play hard. While I wasn’t wowed by him the times I saw him this year, I did like his style and baseball smarts. He’s not a prospect YET, though.

would be quite weird because it would have barbaro canizares and matt young on it. stigma be damned, they have a better chance of being successful major leaguers than some of the lower guys and that’s my idea of a prospect.

Depends on how you judge Major Leaguer. If a guy playing a handful of games or getting a season as a backup is more important to you than the potential of being a regular, then that’s cool, because right now there are guys who are 19 in the Braves Minor Leagues and actually have a chance of getting to play significant innings for the Braves, while Young and Canizares at best are backups. Yes, Young and Canizares are more likely to play some games in the Majors, but at this point in their careers neither is going to start or is likely to put significant time in in the MLB.

My thoughts...

Your list looks pretty good. I, though, would have Beachy higher than a couple other top 10 guys because 1) he’s made it, 2) he’s steady and has great chaacter/demeanor which will allow him to compete at the MLB level, an intangible not measured by a radar gun, and 3) his control is very good. It doesn’t matter if you are pitching in Little League or the MLB, the name of the game is to throw strikes!

SLEEPER…kind of going off the Beachy theme from last year…you know someone out there will shock everyone. My pick is Juan Abreu. He has NASTY stuff…mid-90s, hard slider. He’s a little more seasoned, and I think he can make the climb. His control could be better, but he’s electric.

Too often on these lists we look at youth as projectable more than MLB ready. My idea of a prospect is one that can play now…because what good is a prospect for a MLB team trying to win a WS if they can’t pitch their way out of the minors?

Thinking they can be good and pitching in the minors and producing at the major league level are 2 different things!

by Braves12 on Dec 17, 2010 10:05 AM EST reply actions

My Top 15...

1. Teheran (Pedro-like qualities)
2. Kimbrel (He set MLB record last year and his stocky strong build = longevity as closer)
3. Minor (Big lefty, huge upside…solid 2 or 3 starter)
4. Freeman (good defense, contact, solid tools…will end up in LF)
5. Beachy (Great make up and build, steady, competitor, strike machine…4-5 starter or BP)
6. Delgado (Similar to Beachy as far as stuff, his FB will back off as he learns to pitch)
7. Vizcaino (Upside diminished by injury…might be successful, but for shorter stint)
8. Perez (set up man potential, or back end rotation guy…could be higher as he develops)
9. Lipka (Could go either way…everyday player or fringe guy…solid tools…competes)
10. Hoover (I think he finds his way to MLB, probably won’t be in ATL)
11. Bethancourt (Good organizational catcher, will be steady player in MLB, catcher’s make it)
12. Salcedo (Jury is out…could be top 5 type player, and INF or future, or stay inconsistent)
13. Harrilchak (Gamer, hustle guy, nice 4th OF option, will win hearts of ATL fans)
14. Jones (still waiting for all around game to develop, athletic enough to contribute in diff Pos)
15. Abreu (sleeper, great stuff, needs to develop command of pitches and stay ahead in count)

Why is Freddie moving to LF?

by Cream on Dec 17, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

I think down the road, Freddie is a good enough athlete to play LF if he doesn’t develop the power wanted at 1B. It’s no knock on him, just I think he will be a 12-15 year MLB player that hits.300 with 40 2Bs, 12-15 HRs, 80 RBIs. Yes, those are good numbers, but as the Braves build this pitching juggernaut and start drafting young bats, he will get moved to help the club.

Freddie will be a fan favorite in ATL.

by Braves12 on Dec 17, 2010 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

But…Freddie doesn’t have the athleticism for LF…

Neither does...

Diaz, Hinske, Melky, or McLouth…but we have seen them out there.

Freddie is a better athlete then you give him credit for.

by Braves12 on Dec 17, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

You can’t really put McLouth in that group. The guy is a fantastic athlete. If you don’t think he’s a good defender that’s one thing, but don’t knock his athleticism. And Diaz and Cabrera both run better and have more of the kind of agility necessary for the outfield than Freeman does. Hinske you’re right about. Freddie won’t be in LF.

I’m with CB on this one. I saw a lot of Freeman last year at AAA. While he’s a great, athletic 1B, he’s just not going to be able to play any other position. Sure, you could stick him in LF and he would be a little better than say Adam Dunn(assuming he can judge fly balls) and he appears smart enough that he would take better routes to balls than Melky did, but neither of those statements are really saying very much.

Freeman is a wonderful defensive 1B. Be happy with that. He’ll hit just fine. He may not hit 35 HR every year, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him lead the NL in doubles in 3 or 4 years, and we should all be able to live with that.

Curious why you say Wilkin Ramirez doesn’t belong. He was ranked #8 in the Tigers system entering 2010. I know he’s got some major holes in his swing, but he still has big-time tools. And the Braves must’ve gotten something to click as he hit .253/.351/.458 after getting traded to Gwinnett. And they liked what they saw enough to re-up him for next year (just his age-25 season).

I’ve never seen him play of course, and I’m sure you have, so I’m curious to get your impressions.

I don’t have CB’s eye for players, but I saw him 3 or 4 times in 2010 and thought he looked like a pretty good LF. Nothing at the plate went to long term memory.

I like Ramirez’s athletic ability, and I like is potential, but there are other players who could fill out the bottom of the list better, if only because they’re younger and you don’t know what they could develop into. Ramirez is a 25 year old who was traded for cash, passed through waivers without being claimed, and became a Minor League free agent. It’s not a matter of how I feel really, it’s that the whole of baseball doesn’t see much special. He could work his way into becoming a backup outfielder, he’d be good at it, he’s a good defender and has pop, but he’s at an age with enough experience to say that he’s pretty much developed. He can refine his game, but he’s not all of the sudden going to get a good enough handle of the strike zone to allow his skills to shine.

For instance, I’d say Ramirez’s 2008 (.303/.371/.522) as a 22-year-old at Double-A is every bit as impressive as Millgan’s debut (.345/.393/.589) as a 21-year-old at Rome. The difference is essentially 40 points of batting average here, and let’s not forget Ramirez swiped 26 bases that year too. So basically, since then, it’s Milligan’s injury history (and potential issues adjusting to upper levels) vs. Ramirez’s struggle to acclimate to AAA. And with Ramirez showing signs of life after the trade…

I don’t really know honestly, because again I’ve never seen any of these guys play. But there’s a brief line of stat-based thinking.

by tgthree on Dec 17, 2010 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

As far as that goes, Miligan is 2 years younger and will be playing 2 levels below Ramirez in 2011, so while you know what you have with Ramirez at 25, there’s still the potential that Milligan could out develop him at 25. When you’re talking prospects, it’s all about the potential. Ramirez has 7 seasons and 743 games of pro ball, there’s not much potential that he’s going to develop to become any better. Milligan has 88 games of pro ball. He’s got the potential to develop.

Prospect lists are a guessing game, to some extent

But at some point, you get enough experience with guys to know what theyll be — you don’t have to guess anymore. Id say 7 years is probably that time.

I understand exactly what cb is saying and it is pretty much the whole what is a prospect and how do you quantify potential (possible future performance) debate.

In reality, for any given player with “tools” (athletic gifts), the chance that something clicks and he suddenly rises to a new level of performance can never be ruled out. It doesn’t happen all that often, but it definitely does happen.

Wilken Ramarez could, for example, go crazy at AAA in early 2011 and be the starting LF in Atlanta for the 2d half of the season. Not likely, but definitely possible given his tools.

by fandave on Dec 18, 2010 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

I understand why you wouldn't put Ramirez in your top 25.

But this is my top 25.

Ramirez was the same age as Cordier this year and a level above. He has enough athleticism to have been ranked the #4 propsect in the Tiger organization less than a year ago (by the Tiger blog on Scout.com). He had a horrible time at Toledo this year, but bounced way back at Gwinnett. He made big strides this in Gwinnett in his K/BB ratio and may have even been a little “hit unlucky.”

Ther is a fairly good chance his speed in the outifled makes him a more valuable major leaguer than a number of the younger guys on the list.

Those are my thoughts in ranking Ramirez number 19. Personally, I welcome the discussion (that’s the greatest value of these lists), but stating he does not belong on a prospect list is overkill.

Mine, with explanation so I can sound even dumber in retrospect

1. Julio Teheran – Do I need to even say why?
2. Freddie Freeman – Also think this goes without explanation. Frame/age makes me think a lot more of his power than reports
3. Randall Delgado – #s have been great. Reportedly has an awesome slider too, in addition to the change/curve
4. Edward Salcedo – Upside, upside, upside I guess. And his bad numbers don’t worry me when looking at other elite SSs making their debuts at the same level.
5. Christian Bethancourt – So young, with immense tools, and I think his numbers reflect this next year and going forward
6. Mike Minor – Never understood the hate. Low 90s heat, 3 other solid pitches, plus the makeup stuff. Sounds like a great pitcher to me.
7. Matt Lipka – Love the tools, and think he’ll flourish now that he focuses on baseball. Just wish if he is eventually bound for CF they’d do it soon so he can get a feel for the position
8. Craig Kimbrel – Seems low, but the value of a closer, while those above could be top notch starters/position players make me reduce him some
9. Mycal Jones – CB has sold me on his potential, tools, and I like the near readiness. Hoping he’s our Chone Figgins
10. Arodys Vizcaino – The elbow issues and multiple seasons cut short for injury worry me.
11. JJ Hoover – Not the immense upside of Vizcaino, but seems much safer bet. Should be at least a solid reliever, if not a Millwood or better type starter
12. Carlos Perez – Long way away, but loads of potential
13. Brandon Beachy – Not sure if he’ll make it or not. Stuff seemed pretty hittable when he doesn’t keep it down
14. Cory Harrilchak – His AFL production and second half makes me think he’s making his move to 4th OF at least
15. Brett Oberholtzer – Sounds like another in the long line of solid Braves left handed starting prospects
16. Andrelton Simmons – I think his bat works enough to let his glove standout. And if not, relief pitching.
17. Dave Filak – Reports sound pretty damn good stuff wise
18. Tyler Pastornicky – Age at AA makes me think he’ll at least be a solid utility IF, if not better
19. Erik Cordier – Something makes me think he’s Venters from the right side this year.
20. Cory Gearrin – Seems like a safe bet for a 10+ year career as a solid middle reliever
21. Elmer Reyes – I really like his potential, as he moves up and physically matures, I think we’ve gotten a good one.
22. Edison Sanchez – Liked him a lot coming into the year. 2011 will determine if he’s for real, or just another Odreman or Falcon.
23. Alejandro Sanchez – That they put him in the GCL makes me intrigued enough to put him here
24. Zeke Spruill – Should be higher, especially if he’s putting it all together. Good stuff, big frame.
25t. Abraham Espinosa and Hector Garcia – We’ll see what both can do stateside next year. Lots of potential, but so far away.
Others considered – Stephen Marek, Adam Milligan, Cory Rasmus, Juan Abreu, Joe Leonard, Todd Cunningham, Steve Kent, Benino Pruneda, Andy Otero, Jose Ortegano, Caleb Brewer, David Hale, Lee Hyde, Eduardo Silva, Phil Gossellin, Luis de Luna.

I love Stephen Marek. I just temper my rankings for relievers due to the fact that relievers are so much less valuable than starters. Marek has a great shot to fill Moylan’s role in the future.

Wonder if anyone has an idea how to best approach this...

This past season, my son spent a week making a poster that read, “Congratulations, Billy Wagner, on a Hall of Fame Career.” We took it with us when we attended the Braves final game in D.C. vs. the Nationals. We had Johnny Venters give it to Billy, who told us before he went to warm up that he loved the sign and would be happy to autograph it and get it back to us. As huge Braves and BW fans, we’d love to get in touch with him, as he never had a chance to get the sign back to us. He was called in to relieve at the end of the game.

That’s awesome dude. I would suggest e-mailing the Braves’ Front Office, but with today, an e-mail actually getting read is pretty slim. In all honesty, sending a hand-written letter with your story would go a long way to getting the sign back. Good luck to you and your son!

I don't get relief prospects except the best of the best...

just thinking how many middle and late relief arms were starters in the minors. The overall value of a middle reliever vs. even a just below average starter or an everyday player if only everyday for 1-3 years so relievers except the best have much value and few minor league relievers become major league relievers. It’s a double whammy in my mind. Unless you’re a dominant reliever in the minors, I can’t see much success in the majors. Kimbrel works because he’s close, and even in the majors last year has shown a huge ability to be untouchable. Gearrin seems like one of those destined to be a guy who alternates arm issues with 80+ appearances seasons until his arm is chewed up and done. Marek looked damn good last year, and Hyde is being groomed as at worst a LOOGY, with maybe David Hale below AAA for me since he’s got the potential to dominate but I’m becoming wary if he doesn’t up the K rate for what is said to be dynamic stuff. Pruneda has the stuff, but can he both control AND remain healthy? Take out those guys though, and it’s almost all minor league starters that are looking for the eventual bullpen once you become major leaguers, let alone a valuable reliever at the back end; guys like Venters and Medlen have been starters, add Beachy, Cordier, Ortegano, Hoover, Filak, etc.

I guess that’s the long way of asking; how much value do minor league relievers have, considering the general lack of value of a reliever vs. starters and position players AND the fact that most major league relievers are starters in the minors.

Another one...

1) Teheran: top 5 prospect in all MiLB
2) Freeman: Very high on him and was considered for #1
3) Minor: LHSP with #2 starter upside, already in majors.
4) Arodys Vizcaino: Tom Gordon clone. Still see him as a SP until proven otherwise.
5) Randall Delgado: Good stuff, but seems to lack the “it” factor for me.
6) Craig Kimbrel: Insane K rates, would be higher except for the RP factor
7) Brandon Beachy: Would be a top 5 guy for me in most years. Think his stuff plays up more than he’s given credit for.
8) Carlos Perez: Still raw, but LHPs with mid-90s stuff get ranked high.
9) JJ Hoover: Another good SP arm that would have some nice buzz in other organizations.
10) Matt Lipka: Doesn’t have a position or much of a track record. Still, what we see is nice enough to get silly with projections.
11) Andrelton Simmons: Possibly the most disputed Braves prospect. I’m high on his ability to stay @ SS with enough bat control to in the top 2 of the order.
12) Oberholtzer: LHP who get outs are commodities.
13) Salcedo: Comes in the highest of the guys without good stats to back up the scouting reports… I forgive him a little more because of his 2 year layoff.
14) Adam Milligan: very high on his bat and is decent in LF. Gets injury mulligan for last year.
15) Bethancourt: Maybe has the best tools in relative to position than anyone in the system.
16) Mychal Jones: moving to 2B hurts his upside. Prolly fell from 11 when announced.
17) Hector Garcia: Hasn’t made it out of DSL, but upside is tremendous
18) Tyler Pastornicky: Don’t think his bat will play as a starter, but he’ll see some time as a UTL guy
19) Ernesto Silva: Another International guy with serious potential. Made it stateside this year.
20) Paul Clemens: stands out to me in from the horde of 3rd tier P prospects. No real reason though… all have great arms with middling stats.
21) Stephen Marek: could be a 7th inning guy within the year
22) Joe Leonard: Could develop, but need more data to project him as a future MLB’er
23) Dave Filak: Good arm and was treated with kid gloves after being drafted. Think we’re grooming him as a closer.
24) Erik Cordier: Another arm down here. The injuries have taken a toll, but his FB plays.
25) Kurt Fleming: Personal Fave

I like the system. Absolutely incredible P Depth. Between Rule 5 and the Uggla, Lee, and Linebrink trades, we’ve lost 6 P prospects and we haven’t really dented the depth. Interesting high upside position prospects balanced with some advanced college bats. Outside of Freeman, I don’t see any having a big impact in the bigs for 2-3 years though.

how does Lipka not have a position?

by Braves24 on Dec 17, 2010 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Scouting Reports aren't high on his ability to stay @ SS

And there’s an unknown whether he can move anywhere else. Many want to believe that he’ll settle in @ CF or maybe even 2B, but that’s a “counting the chickens before they hatch” hope to me.

I’m high on him and think he could settle in @ CF, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up as a LF only type.

by theatlfan on Dec 17, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

He’s too athletic to let rot in LF. He’d handle short fine but would be even better at second. He’s definitely good enough for CF, cause he’s fast and hustles, and has enough baseball smarts to learn the position well.

by cbwilk on Dec 17, 2010 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

I understand he's athletic

That’s not a ?. The reports I’ve seen say that he doesn’t have the true “SS Actions” that divide OK SS’s from Great ones. As far as OFs, there’s plenty of great athletes that can’t fine tune their D well enough to become a good CF – so forth a great one (ie, Ellsbury). It’s early, but it’s a legit concern for now.

As an aside, I do have him in the top 10. It’s not like I don’t like him or even think that he wouldn’t have enough bat for LF… if he develops like we think he could, then he would. There’s no shame in “only” being a leadoff hitting LF…

by theatlfan on Dec 17, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, I don’t think his body profiles well at shortstop, that’s why I think second is great for him.

The thing about having a leadoff guy in left is that it’s a waste of the easiest defensive position. You should have a slugger who’s bad on defense out there, so if you’re going to have a leadoff type guy there then you need a slugger at one of your less typical slugger positions, like center, second, or short.

I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

Agreed, it makes a lineup card much easier to fill out if you can put your GG SS, CF, or C into a premier spot in the order. I only put LF out there to say that even in a WCS defensively, it’s still not that bad.

My point is more that when we talk about prospects with small sample sizes, people tend to overlook the negatives that will crop up eventually. People look @ a guy like Lipka and see the SS by his name and immediately think that even if he’s forced off SS, then he’ll settle into another valued defensive position. That’s not necessarily the case. Lipka could end up in LF; Salcedo could grow into a LF/1B. Should that take the shine off the bat? No, their bats should still play (well… with the expected development). The “realistic” WCS should also be thought of when thinking of prospects – not just the BCS.

by theatlfan on Dec 18, 2010 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

But isn't that all prospect rankings are?

You, according purely to personal opinion, balance BCS with WCS scenario, and the likelihood of each, plus the likelihood of something in between.

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Dec 18, 2010 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

OK, fine, “slammed” is prolly too harsh a word. But the point remains: people look @ newer draftees / international FA signings through the rose colored glasses a bit more than the prospects who’ve been around a while. It should be a legit concern that Lipka doesn’t play a premier position and that should knock him down some – as it should be a legit concern that Salcedo never turns his tools into usable baseball skills.

by theatlfan on Dec 18, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

but Lipka does?

He’s a SS now, but if not, then 2B or CF. 2B with his offensive tools could be premier, and CF is certainly a premier position.

Yeah, I think he has the perfect body for second base. Strong and thick, able to make the turn with power and take a blindside slide into his legs.

I agree with your point on people’s opinions of young prospects, but I think that lipka’s speed is what suits him for center field in the worst case scenario. With a guy like salcedo, he has a big frame and may have to move off of short, but he doesn’t have the pure speed to move to center.

Can’t remember his new name at moment (Ascencio??) Had good potential as a RP.
Also, is Jordan Schafer still considered a prospect?

His real name is Jairo Asencio

And he’s got decent potential, but not top-25 potential. He would be, like, a decent bullpen option.
And I think Schafer has graduated already

A look into the even more future

I’m gonna try and predict the top Braves prospects for 2012(assuming that JT, FF, Minor, Beachy, and Kimbrel are no longer prospects)

1. Carlos Perez- I think he’s going to blow out minds in the summer. I think he become the LH JT and is an absolute stud. He can either BOOOM!!! or bust, and I think he will indeed BOOM big time.

2. Randal Delgado
3. Edward Salcedo- I think he hops in front of Lipka and has a very promising year
4. Matt Lipka
5. Christian Bethancourt- I think he gets his bat straightened out and becomes a very solid future catcher, but since we have BMAC maybe a very intresting trade piece
6. Aroyds Vizcaino- I think he could also boom or bust this season so I’m not gonna move him at all because I have no idea what to do with him

I’m not going to go any further because I know my prospects well….but not that well

My 2 Cents. I'll try to mix it up a bit.

1- Teheran (No question. So much talent, and the filthiest stuff around)
2- Minor (Smart, calm, durable, and good array of pitches. Best changeup in our rotation by far)
3- Freeman (Outstanding fielder. Don’t expect too much at the plate this year though. Expect strikeouts. Still, I think he’ll be a 25-30 HR guy in a few years)
4- Kimbrel (Love watching him pitch. Will end up being a perennial all-star)
5- Delgado (Great all around pitcher, but nothing sticks out to me. Doesn’t do any one thing exceptionally. Lower ceiling than JT, but a safer prospect)

6- Lipka (LOVE this draft pick. The sooner he gets to the majors, the better)
7- Vizcaino (Hopefully will overcome the injuries)
8- Salcedo (High ceiling. Great swing, but could be K’d alot in the majors. Fielding is questionable)
9- Perez (Another high ceiling guy like JT, great stuff. Could turn out to be a wilder version of MM)
10- Simmons (I love this guy. Fielding and plate discipline are wonderful. I could see him improving his contact an outstanding defensive infielder- think Cliff Pennington)

11- Beachy
12- Mycal
13- Hoover
14- Harrilchak
15- Bethancourt
16- Rasmus
17- Oberholtzer
18- Leonard
19- Gearrin
20- Kent
21- Gearrin
22- Espinosa
23- Pruneda
24- Cunningham
25- Filak

23. Matt Young
24. Barbaro Canizares
25. Stephen Marek

Does Joe Leonard really have a chance to be a true major leaguer one day? I havent seen him play, but I know that 3b is primarily an offensive first position and his offensive statistics are not good. I’m here to represent the Martin Prados of the world who get looked over year after year, yet put up solid numbers at every level. When it comes to prospects ranked 20-25, who gives a rat’s ass? Give me a player that’s put up the numbers…

Martin was arguably our best player last year, and his highest rank was 18.

Joe Leonard has only played 39 games. If you’re putting that much stock into a player’s first season of pro ball then you’re using faulty logic to make your decisions. Minor League stats tell you even less about players than Major League stats.

I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

my point exactly...

Joe Leonard was not a hyped prospect. He’s had one year of pro ball and didnt blow anyone away. Why does he show up on this list? Because he’s young. I know my view is biased to the players such as Young and Canizares who have shown great poise at AAA, yet have never received a real shot at the majors, but why can’t someone step outside the box and look at the term “prospect” differently. Dictionary defines prospect as “the possibility of future success”. What has Joe Leonard proven to show possibility of future success? Nothing yet. Matt Young plays a defensive first position quite well and has a .390 career OBP over 6 years. Older or not, he needs to be at least given a shoutout.

Bubba Sparxxx: It's gettin' Uggla...IN HERE! UP IN HERE!

by ryan c on Dec 17, 2010 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

Prospects are about potential. Yes, about future success. Who’s got more potential, the 31 year old with 5 games in the Majors, or the 21 year old who’s only played 39 games as a pro? Leonard has years to develop, he could become anything, from a perennial All-Star to an A ball washout, but Canizares is what he is, a guy who hits for a good average in AAA and can’t play acceptable defense.

What has Leonard proven to show the possibility of future success? Six months ago he was the 101st player taken in the amateur draft. He finished the year in Low A, which most Braves draftees don’t do. These are good indicators that a group of people who evaluate players professionally think he has a chance of future success. Meanwhile, those same people show no desire to put Canizares in the Major Leagues.

I still don’t think Young should be on a prospect list, but at least you put him at the end. The kid has an excellent shot of being the Braves 4th outfielder this year and if you feel that’s more than some other guy in the organization might develop into, which is a perfectly valid claim, then he belongs in that spot for you.

His numbers certainly aren't "poor"...

maybe mediocre, but certainly not poor. And that’s not considering whatever he showed defensively since we can’t see that from a profile page on a website.

It’s also ignoring what you can gather from his play at Pitt, which while it isn’t the same as playing in the SALLY or maybe even the Appalachian League, is something to grade him for.

also, there’s been plenty of games in Orlando at instructs (of which numerous reports on various players have come out), which would only add to any info on Leonard.

Leonard was a hyped prospect though

I think BA even had him as a “sleeper” 1st rounder at one point last season. Big athletic guy, Good to Plus D, nice eye (OBP), developing power that his body type would support. Had a good year in school last season as well. No, he wasn’t a 1st round pick, but to say that he wasn’t that good since he didn’t carry the hype of a Bryce Harper isn’t really accurate.

Look @ it this way: he was considered at least a decent prospect heading into the draft, then outperformed the #4 overall pick during the season. I find it very hard to say that he was considered a disappointment and shouldn’t show on a deep list of prospects in our organization…

I guess since I write the minor league write ups I should post mine

1. Julio Teheran – real deal. only question is how will his frame hold up with his motion
2. Freddie Freeman – I think people questioning his power are focusing too much on an injury plagued AA stint. They ignore the fact that he hit the ball well at AA until he hurt himself and has hit everywhere else as well.
3. Randall Delgado – Maybe the most underrated prospect in the game.
4. Mike Minor – If the velo keeps he is a good #3 or even a #2
5. Matt Lipka – scouting reports have sold me though I believe he makes Atlanta in CF
6. Edward Salcedo – Best tools we have had in a position player since Andruw. People are down because the Braves rushed him which has nothing to do with his talent level. I trust CB, but I still don’t think he stays at SS.
7. Craig Kimbrel – Maybe a little low but I don’t value relievers really high, even VERY VERY good ones.
8. Arodys Vizcaino – if not for the elbow he would have been 3
9. JJ Hoover – I saw him at his absolute best in the Sally League All Star game in 2009 and the curve can be a plus pitch. If it stays that way he could be a workhorse #3
10. Brandon Beachy – the real deal. Might be a better version of Medlen
11. Carlos Perez – LH Teheran
12. Mycal Jones – He is late blooming but he is going to be useful to atlanta in some way
13. Christ Bethancourt – this may be too low but its hard to argue with the reports from Rome this year and the stats. Braves have been challenging their catchers in recent years.
14. Joe Leonard – My leonard man crush continues. Remember, I was the first person on this website to rank Freddie Freeman when he was drafted too.
15. Paul Clemens – had a fantastic year after struggling for 2 years. one of the best arms in the system.
16. Steven Kent – put up some gaudy numbers. If he moves to the pen full time then he comes off my list, but it looks like they will let him start.
17. Adam Milligan – I normally don’t rank injured players, but I like Milligan and he is one of the few power bats we have in the system.
18. David Filak – Great arm, could move up this chart fast next season
19. Andrelton Simmons – word on the street is his bat is looking good. but we shall see
20. Cory Rasmus – now that he is healthy he has a chance to make an impact, but in what way remains to be seen
21. Tyler pastornicky – best chance to be a starting SS for the braves
22. Cory Harrilchak – his AFL showing is interesting but I already liked him. maybe a slightly better gregor blanco?
23. David Rohm – Another impact power bat. Could surprise a lot of us next seaosn
24. Phil Gosselin – I liked what I saw but he will need to move up fast to be really interesting
25. Willie Cabrera – I love this guy.

Guys who just missed:
Edison Sanchez – I love this guy but couldn’t really justify putting him in.
Elmer Reyes – Love him
Abraham Espinosa – DSL numbers are hard to interprety but you have to like the age
Hector Garcia – see above
Todd Cunningham – want to see what happens with his bat

Guys I probably missed on
Brett Oberholtzer – I just didn’t like what I read from him but apparently BA loves him and everyone else had him close to the top 15
Scott Diamond – ALways liked the guy but I didn’t see a future with the Braves with him. I was right apparently
Steve Kent is probably too high but definitely in my 25

Guys who will be on this list next season:
Sanchez
reyes
William Beckwith
Brandon Drury
Kurt Flemming
Cory Brownsten
Ryan Delgado

That list is very sobering

I remember how high we were on some of those guys. Look how many didnt turn out to be much.

With that said when you consider how many of those are regular guys (3 in top 10) and guys who have played significant games (2 others), we’re doing pretty well. I wonder how many teams actually see 5 of their top 10 guys in a list like that actually “make it” with a couple of others still having a chance.

Oh yeah man, there are so many guys. We were toying with the idea of doing a recap of past BA’s top 10 lists and see what happened to guys. The Braves actually had some pretty horrendous years there for a while but still did a good job trading for the pieces they needed.

by yondaime4 on Dec 19, 2010 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

That would be a pretty cool segment

Prospect Philosophy

Looking at this list, if, in 2007, I had rated Gregor Blanco (#37 prospect) higher than Eric Campbell (#2), would I have been proven “right?”

Yes.

You ranked Eric Campbell in the first place. That was wrong.

some guy named Elvis too. one of the worst parts of the Tex trade was they kept Yunel and gave up Elvis.

by redjohn on Dec 18, 2010 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

Except...

Elvis has only three of the five tools. Maybe his average becomes better than league average as he gets older, but he’s yet to show the ability to hit for average at the major-league level. He’s never going to hit for power, leaving him as a four-tool player at best.

Forgive me if I don’t cry buckets over losing a player that has proven to be an all-glove, no-bat shortstop so far…

Hmm

I seem to remember last year (or maybe the year before) seeing a huge excel spreadsheet with all of the lists as well as the combined list.

Considering how much TC has grown this year…that list is going to be a beast. I feel bad for whatever schmuck (mvhs) that gets stuck filling that thing out….

On second thought,

I probably should have ranked Simmons higher. 14 strikeouts in 239 ABs in Danville? Sweet.

Thanks Bobby!

1. Julio Teheran
2. Freddie Freeman
3. Randall Delgado
4. Craig Kimbrel
5. Arodys Vizcaino
6. Mike Minor
7. Matt Lipka
8. Edward Salcedo
9. Carlos Perez
10. Brandon Beachy
11. Christian Bethancourt
12. JJ Hoover
13. Andrelton Simmons
14. Mycal Jones
15. Cory Harrilchak

19. Steve Kent
20. Tyler Pastornicky
21. David Filak
22. Abraham Espinosa
23. Corey Rasmus
24. Elmer Reyes
25. Phil Gosselin

My biggest debate was who should be #25: Gosselin, Terdoslavich, Rohm, or Gearrin. I chose Gosselin because he seems like a true “baseball player”. He plays hard and seems like he would be a great bench player who could help out at a lot of positions. Best Case Scenario = Ian Kinsler
Worst Case Scenario = Brent Lillibridge

This is pretty scary for other teams

With the young pitchers who hve the ability to become number 1s and the young athletes we have,we have a VERY VERY bright future

by cjones2010 on Dec 19, 2010 8:41 AM EST reply actions

Now all the Braves have to get is some power in this years draft, especially in the OF. They have so much pitching it’s ridiculous. They upgraded the infield a lot too.

2. Freddie Freeman
3. Mike Minor
4. Craig Kimbrel
5. Randall Delgado
6. Andrelton Simmons
7. Brandon Beachy
8. Matt Lipka
9. Mycal Jones

19.Tyler Pastornicky
20. Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg
21, Edward Salcedo
23. Brett Oberholzer
24. Cory Rasmus
25. Brett DeVall

I like Matt Young a lot too. And I think the Braves should give Antoan Richardson a chance to play center also. Jordan Schafer may still come around too.

I think Andrelton Simmons is the shortstop of the future for Atlanta.

Simmons

I agree about Simmons. I did not submit my top 10 but I do have him in there. I think Simmons will be the SS of the future. I think he will have a breakout year next year and he will be in everybody’s top 10 list.

Admired as a saint. Defined by my rank. Combined with my strength. My time and my length.

I am late this year, but here's my list.

1. Julio Teheran
2. Freddie Freeman
3. Mike Minor
4. Randall Delgado
5. Craig Kimbrell
6. Brandon Beachy
7. Matt Lipka
8. Carlos Perez
9. J.J. Hoover
10. Christian Bethancourt
11. Arodys Vizcaino
12. Andrelton Simmons
13. Edward Salcedo
14. Phil Gosselin
15. Brett Oberholtzer
16. Cory Harrilchak
17. Mycal Jones
18. Joe Leonard
19. Cory Gearrin
20. David Filak
21. Abraham Espinosa
22. Todd Cunningham
23. Adam Milligan
24. Tyler Pastornicky
25. Cory Rasmus

I’ll give a full explanation later, but my major points are that I don’t trust Arodys to be more than a reliever, dropping his value. I really like Gosselin and think he was a steal where we got him. He might not have the tools to be a major league regular, however. I guess we’ll see.
