Add another left handed setup man (because just about every slugger in the NL East is a lefty). Check.
So what's left for the Atlanta Braves on the off-season shopping list?
Really, not much. The Braves have a pretty set roster, and have even gone as far as to fill out a lot of the details of the roster -- bench guys and 5th and 6th bullpen arms. But that got me thinking about what else the Braves need. It was noted recently by the Braves beat writers that the team is fine going into the spring with guys like Diory Hernandez and Ed Lucas competing for backup jobs. I disagree.
Two years ago we suffered through a couple of months of Diory Hernandez not performing very well while filling in for the injured Yunel Escobar (and the injured Omar Infante). A big part of our offense was missing and we couldn't replace it, though that was the rare double-shortstop injury. Last year when Chipper Jones went down, when Yunel Escobar went down, and other key players went down, we were able to fill in with an Omar Infante or Brooks Conrad and the offense kept going. While Conrad is still here to provide that second/third base support, and Martin Prado can always move back in from the outfield, the Braves need another above average backup that can play shortstop and come close to replacing what Omar Infante gave us. (I say come close, because it would be hard to replace or replicate what Omar did last year -- maybe even for Omar.)
While the cost of getting Dan Uggla was VERY cheap, it did remove a nice and reliable backup piece away from our team. The Braves stated after the trade they would try to acquire another utility infielder, but the urgency of that needs to be stepped up. With the fragility of Chipper Jones, we saw last year the need for reliable and proven Major League backups.
This off-season has been a success, but that one last piece needs to be secured before our depth will be at a level where I can feel comfortable.

I think with ~$4M left, a 4th OF to let Prado backup 2nd and 3rd should be a priority over backing up SS.

With guys like Conrad and Hinske,
I’m pretty happy with the guys we have coming off the bench in terms of swinging the stick. But since the offseason began, I’ve wanted us to go after a guy who is a beast in the field, even if he doesnt bring a solid bat. All of those fielding measurements go over my head, but do any of you stat guys have a few FA’s you think fit that mold; that mold being a cheap infield utility guy who’s nasty with the glove, can run around the bases with above average speed, and would be a step above Diory?

Above average defense in the two places we need it most: center and short. His bat isn’t anything special, but its at least serviceable, unlike Diory.

I think Hairston is somewhat better with the bat than Diory. Diory is awesome in AAA, but has not been good vs ML pitching.

I’ll go a step further here. I don’t have a lot of confidence in Diory- I cringed when he stepped in the batter’s box. However, according to his time in the minor league and accompanying numbers, there is some potential upside.
With Hairston, his track record is pretty consistent and we can predict with reasonable certainty what his 2011 numbers will look like. It’s a depressing slash line- Bill James estimates 250/311/680.
Problem with Conrad is
he would only serve as a PH. While a power hitting 4th OF type could be our RH PH as well as our OF backup if Chipper gets injured. That way Brooks will move into our RH PH role if Chipper goes down and we still have a serviceable outfield.

most of the free agent SS market is aging former starters like Christian Guzman, and Julio Lugo that will probably want more money than they are worth at this point. Adam Everett would be good if he could hit at all. Maybe Nick Punto?

I have brought him up a lot….but i must admit, his skills may be diminshing and his bat hasnt been good ever….
the main reason i like him is at most he costs $1M and we can probably get him for less…and at worst he is adequate at SS and 2B

When looking at the options that we can Actually afford, without giving up one or more of our talented pitchers, I think he would be one of our better options.

Unless you can back that up with how many of those wouldn’t have been homers at Turner or take into account road splits or something, I don’t care. That’s on pace for 40HR over a full season, which is alot for < $3M.

I checked hittracker...
He had 2 “lucky” homers at U.S. Cellular (would’ve been HRs in 3 and 5 parks, respectively) and another at New Yankee Stadium. 12/19 HRs overall at The Cell, which is a pretty large split, though not crazy. Interestingly, of his road homers, 2 came at Yankee Stadium (which is good for HRs, obviously) and 3 came in Toronto (also a great HR-hitting park). He only hit 2 road HRs in other parks (1 at Target Field, 1 at Safeco).
Put it all together, and I think it’s fair to wonder just how many he’d hit in a neutral environment. He should sign with Colorado or Arizona if he comes to the NL.

its also worth noting that 19 HR in limited ABs is not the same as 40 HR in full time ABs…most likely Ozzie used Andruw perfectly last year and maximized Andruw’s talents, there’s no reason to think its not capable of happening with Fredi (there’s no reason to think Fredi is at worst equal to Ozzie), its just not safe to suggest Andruw would suceed in full time ABs…he has been a part time player for two years for a reason, he has flaws still.

I know but i had seen people try to extrapolate his stats to a full season worth of ABs as if that was something that needs to be considered…its misleading and wanted to make sure that assumption was not advanced any further.
I think havign AJ is a good idea, if he is the insurance against a shitty McLouth or injuries, and as the RH bat and 4th OF.
Now that the Dodgers arent paying him anymore, is he looking for a bigger contract.

Andruw has many problems...
…contact, particularly. However, for a cheap fourth OF option with tons of upside he is a great option. The power to hit the ball out of Turner Field is quite obviously not a problem, whereever he played last year. The zillions of HR’s he has hit at Turner Field show that he has the power to do it.

While I've made the case for adding Andruw clearly...
..and often over the past week, I’ll note that this particular game was supposed to be naming big bats that could be had under $3M. This was my suggestion, although I think the tone of the challenge was less than sincere.
Here’s the link to the thread which clearly says why we could use Andruw (or Murton). If you disagree with those points then say so, but I’m not going to clutter this thread further with an arguement that’s been had several times already.
If you can suggest another cheap big bat, then please do so.

I think the point of the question though was that there isn’t this mythical “BIG BAT” that can be had for what the Braves have left to spend. You and I disagree on whether Andrew fits that profile, but at least he fits in the budget constraints. It’s easy to say we need another slugger, hard to find one who doesn’t want a seven year hundred plus million dollar deal.

the only thing that matters to extending Heyward is the contract that Tulo just received…FA contracts are inherently different than extensions, especially when Hewyard won’t be a FA for 5 years, thats too much uncertainty to deal with even if Heyward’s case.
Really Tulo’s deal isn’t even appropriate because he is closer to FA than Heyward. Heyward should conceivably be convinced by a Braunesque contract (no one will ever sign a Longoria deal, thats just crazy good value).

I fleshed it out more in another thread, so I'll do it again here...
at 80 or 90 though, that’s taking a huge risk in underpaying, because he could give that value before the free agent years alone. What is the risk cost of an injury destroying his ability, I guess that’s the question.
We’re talking about a potential HUGE bat. If Heyward is the potential top 5 defensive RF in the NL, with a .300/.400/.500 offense. If that’s the player we’re talking about over the next 5 years, he’d be in line for an enormous pay day in the second 5 years through free agency. I think, if you’re talking 10 years for that $80-90m, instead of say 7 or 8, then you are grossly undervaluing what he’d be forgoing in those 5 free agent years.
$100m for just those years alone, is an extremely low estimate. Arb and pre-arb years, that’s an estimated $20-25m I’d guess, and that may be low balling him (around $500k the next two years, then 5, 8, and 10 would = $24m combined). If Albert Pujols pushes the per year mark on elite players over $30m, and in the following years between then and when Heyward hits free agency, others push it up closer to $35m, if not more. Add 5 times a low estimate of $20m, that’s $125m, and a $25m discount for us. Go another potentially low estimate of $30m per over those 5 seasons, and now you’re at $175m and a much larger discount for buying him out now. Push it over $35m per year, and we’re talking an estimate of $200m in earnings over those 10 years. I’d think getting him for just half that is still a damn good deal, and potential Braun/Longoria like steal.

Not as far off as people might think...
If we get it done right away…I’d say probably 10 years/$130-135MM is closer.
That seems like A LOT more, but it’s about $10MM more for his arb years ($35MM to $25MM) and $25MM more for the next five years, just $5MM more per season, bringing it to an average of $20MM/year for those five. Heyward making $20MM/year on the free market by that time (assuming average career progression, no major injuries, etc.) is almost a slam dunk, so it’ll still be a deal to get it done at that price, and those will be his prime years.
If you approach it from the vantage point of the annual amount Werth signed for ($18MM), his non-arb years will be cost a little more than that, which is awfully enticing at this point in time for Heyward. In the future, maybe not so much…$25-$30 may be the norm for the top tier of players by the time 2016 rolls around.
As for the pre-arb and arb years, it’s about $7MM per year. He’s only going to make $1MM in the next two years, and getting the other $33MM thru arb is possible but pretty difficult to accomplish. It’s a good compromise for both sides.
You could probably shave $5MM off the total of this portion of the contract to make it $6MM for the five years, but any more and it may not look like a great deal, as he could make some serious bank in the second and third year of arbitration if he keeps his game tight.
Here’s the kicker…if we sign him for 10/$135MM, that’s essentially Chipper’s contract extended for 10 years. There’s no net gain or loss in the amount of team salary being expended on our franchise player for the life of that deal…Heyward will still be making considerably less while Chipper’s still around, so there’s no big logjam of salary restraints overall. We pay less early, we pay more late, but the average is completely on-par for the next 10 years.
Chances are inflation will push the team’s salary up enough by the end of the contract that the final four years are still a bargain at $20MM for 2017-19 and $25MM in 2020.

but he says he loves it in Japan and would like to stay there long term. Heard the Tigers(Hanshin) have an extension in the works.

Can’t say I’m enthused about Lucas either. 28 years old and a career minor leaguer who’s never played a game in the majors despite hitting .270-.300 consistently in the minors. I know that he was with KC and they are insane (Francoeur AND Cabrera???) but still, I’d have to think that he would have gotten a shot at the majors if there was any realistic chance he could produce there. Yeah I’d rather see someone better than Lucas and Hernandez too.
I don’t know if he’s a free agent (too lazy to check) but Omar Vizquel would be cheap and at 43 he’s still got more stick than Hernandez does. By a lot. I think he’d be pretty happy with a job as a backup if he’s not returning to the White Sox.

Seems that we are putting a lot of faith in McLouth performing at an adequate level and Prado easily adapting to the outfield. I know Shaeffer is an option, but even if he is back to being 100% healthy he hasn’t had many at bats in the last 3 years, so he should be at AAA to start the year.

One of JS or Matt Young should be a more than serviceable 4th OFer. If McLouth is extremely horrible, we can always just make a mid-season trade. We should at least give our young players a chance before throwing money at a position we may not need. A backup infield utility guy should be our only remaining priority before the season starts.

A midseason trade would likely cost us more, as we’d be in a more desperate situation. Signing a quality backup is good insurance for not relying on BOTH JS and MY in 2011 and might end up being the cheaper route. I think its Mather v. Young in ST and JS in AAA all year. The more I type it the better I like it.

Blanco: .283 BA, .360 OBP, .367 SLG, 11 SB (10 with KC), 1.1 WAR, and -0.7 UZR
Schafer hasn’t been in the majors for a while, so I doubt you can honestly say he’ll produce better than Blanco.
Also, I am not saying that Blanco is the best option, but to bash another poster without any substance yourself makes no sense.
What are you going to compare Blanco to? McLouth last good season of over 2 years ago or the most recent season?

Let me also say...
That I don’t believe that Nate will be as bad next season as he was last season; however, I would feel better with a more predictable player in CF. While Blanco wouldn’t set the world on fire, he would be a safer bet in CF than either McLouth or Schafer.
Sure, McLouth may gain back some of his All Star luster, and I am rooting for that to happen, but it’s a gamble. Also, I need to see Schafer against MLB pitching before I recrown him CF of our team.

Ok, well, for starters, Gonzalez defense is declining as he moves into his mid 30s. On top of that, all of his offensive value is wrapped up in his ability to hit a ball far, which also tends to decline as one reaches their mid 30s.
To top it all off, he is a terrible batter, posting a career OBP abou 35 points below the league average. More of his plate appeances result in outs than just about any other shortstop in the game.
Should I go on?

However, he gives just as few fucks about what anyone thinks on this matter, not just me. It’s called being fans. We have a right t voice our opinions on matters.
But hey, you are probably right. Alex Gonzalez will be the best shortstop in the NL this year. It doesn’t matter that he will not get on base in 70.5% of his plate appearances, or that he is old and declining defensively. He will hit DINGERZ (except when he plays in Turner Field, as we saw last season.)

Centerfield
Although a more credible option at ss would be desirable, I believe its far more important at this point to have a reliable, proven centerfield alternative to McLouth. With Nate, its best to plan for the worst while hoping for the best. It would be a mistake to count too heavily on Jordan Schafer or Matt Young for obvious reasons. Because the Braves were able to pick up Uggla on the cheap, they are in an excellent position to trade for a legit centerfielder. The market is thin, but I believe that patience and persistence will be rewarded. Frank Wren has proven to be an extraordinarily opportunistic GM.
Agree with the idea
of adding a CF, but not to backup Nate necessarily, more to backup Chipper. If he goes down, we have no left fielder and our everyday CF will be either JS or MYoung. I’d rather keep JS in AAA all year, and while it’d be nice to see MYoung get a chance, I don’t feel comfortable relying on him to replace Chipper in the lineup.

I have no idea how he will do in MLB if given the chance, but if his OB% is close to what he does in AAA he’d be a drop off but not a huge drop off. Chipper obviously is better tha M Young, but M Young deserves a chance.

Given how big an if Schafer is for 2012, I’d like to give him a full year (injury-free) in AAA and let him win the job next spring, kinda like Freeman this year.
I remember they did a similar thing with Hanson, with someone (can’t remember who, Medlen?) getting the call in 2009 early on over Hanson. I could see it happening with MY and JS the same way.

Agreed, although – as others have accurated pointed out – the problem in the outfield is not limilted to McLouth’s bad defense and erraticly unpredictable offense. If Chipper is injured (which causes Prado to come in to 3B) or if Prado is injured, we are stuck with Hinske / Mather in LF, unless of course McLouth (if he’s hitting) moves over to LF from CF.
So, a high quality defensive CF is extremely important, IMO.

don’t see why matt young would be a mistake ‘for obvious reasons’. Wren has
spoken about him several times admiring his tenacity. i am guessing matt will
get a full opportunity to win a spot during ST. he has earned it. If he sticks and
makes the transition he could easily push Nate and give us some genuine
speed at the top, some walks, contact hitting and decent fielding. at worst he
comes off the bench and is replaced in season through a trade. prado is the
man yet not a true 1 hitter, rather ideal in the 2 slot.
off topic Sherrill was definitely injured last season. spent some time on the DL
and 2 rehab assignments. Braves may feel he is healthy or hoping so, a reasonable
gamble with upside payoff that has worked before.

One thing I have been thinking about.
What happens if the Yankmees don’t get Lee? Will they make a trade with KC? I doubt it, they are too leery(sp?) of the kids Social issues. So, what about coming to us and going after JJ? Wonder what we could get from them? Not saying that can happen, but it is interesting to consider for off the wall possibilities.
Especially given the risks you note above, I just don’t believe if the Yankees would blow up their entire farm system to get Grienke… and by all reports, that’s what it would take to git ’r done.

if we can move at least $3m of KK, I’d love to split the difference between Edgar and Andruw. $1.5m each to come off the bench would be pretty nice, and give us some very good depth of Edgar, Andruw, Ross, Hinske, and then Conrad, Diory, Hicks, Schafer, Young, etc fight for that last spot, or can be injury replacements getting work in AAA until needed.

but like you said, the defense is questionable. I’d rather have a + defender in my infielder backup, and my PH ability in the OF. Not my favorite, but seems like it could be a good fit.

If he is, by my count we have room for 2 more position players. One of those needs to be a backup SS, so if we sign that guy plus another CFer, that leaves no room for any of our young guys (JS, Young, Conrad, etc.).
I assume Mather still has to win the job. But it does look like he’s a front runner for it. I just see Mather and Hinske doing the same things and Hinske is better. Mather plays more OF positions though.

not if it was clear that Uggla was simply a rental. I don’t think you realize how good of a prospect Mike Dunn is…he was great when he got his chance. The Marlins got a pretty good prospect, but because of our pitching depth it didn’t hurt all that much.
Where the Marlins went wrong was underestimating Uggla’s signability…especially with us.

Andruw is done. He’s overweight, weak contact hitter, and his power is a fraction of what it use to be. Just no, we need a DEFENSIVE OF who can play CF.
As for Brendan Ryan… Why? Someone just call Rafael Belliard, he’s got a better bat than him. Someone call Khalil Greene while their at it.
Hairston would be a decent add, but at the same time, why? Diory can handle 3b/ss/2b duties when asked and proved to be a good contact hitter in AAA but has never been given enough AB’s consistently to show that.

I think both have potential and given Andruw’s history, I might lean toward Mather overall for a team choice going forward.
I meant for that bench spot in 2011, Andruw’s a much better option than Mather. I agree that Mather is good and will suffice if need be. I’m curious to see how he works out as well, but I’d rather it be in AAA with JS.

Bottom line is we don’t have to choose between controlling Mather and signing Andruw. I think Andruw’s potential in 2011 is significantly better than Mather.

I thought Mather was out of options
and would have to be exposed to wavers to go to AAA.
If that isn’t the case then I would rather have Andrew.

Not really sure how waivers work.
But we claimed him on waivers, so you might be right about having to put him on the ML club.

basically we claimed him off waivers and put him on our 40 man roster. He is out of options, so if we try to send him to AAA, we need to designate him for assignmnet, if he declines to do so then he is exposed to waivers.
i think that is how it would work.

A player with 5 years of Major League service time who refuses assignment to the minors still receives the money owed to him in his contract. A player with less service time does not.
A player with less than 3 years of MLB Service Time can be assigned to the minors without his consent once.
AFAIK Mather has not been assigned to the minors without his consent before. So we could send him to the minors but he would have to clear waivers first because he is out of options.

But can we start him in AAA? Can he stay on the 40-man in AAA to start the year and be called up if needed? This is what I assumed.
Then, if we send him to AAA he has to clear waivers.

From what I could scrape off the internet, it seems Mather still has to make the team in ST. This would imply that we can start him in AAA without exposing him to waivers.
And if he didn’t make the team and someone claims him we break even anyways, just without “Joey Bombs”. I also discovered his nickname.
So I guess he’s really just an insurance in case we can’t sign a better option without sacrificing anything. Worst case, we don’t sign a better FA, Mather doesn’t make the team, somebody claims him and we’re right back where we started.

If he’s good enough to play, I’d love to give a chance in spring training. Maybe let him play some down the road in Gwinnett as he rebuilds whatever he’s lost.

but if he has done things in that year off to get his head back in a better place, then I’d be all for adding him on a cheap try. If he doesn’t come to camp, void it same as the Rangers. But if he wanted a chance, I’d give it to him, cheaply (minor league non-guaranteed deal).

…..I mean I don’t know, He was playing so bad, it was like he was throwing games, compared to what I’ve seen from him in past years. Even BEFORE Heyward knocked him into 2011, he was displaying absolutely no D what-so-ever, and couldn’t hit the side of a fucking barn with a bat. Maybe it’s his sucky, secret twin, and Nate is off chilling somewhere. But that guy wasn’t the Nate McLouth from years past.

Wouldn’t mind having him. Might not be the best defensive SS out there but his glove is a hell of a lot better than Conrad’s and his offensive numbers are similar to Infante’s. Rumor is that the Astros are looking to cut some payroll and trade him. With him being a Georgia boy, I could see him fitting in nicely.
