Braves Quote For The Day ... The Next Great Braves Pitcher

While everyone is focusing on the playoffs, there is still other news happening in Braves Country. Baseball America released their top-20 Carolina League prospects, and Julio Teheran is number-one:

"Teheran is a top-of-the-rotation guy," Potomac manager Gary Cathcart said. "He's as impressive as you'll ever see with his ability at a young age to command a couple of pitches, not just throw with velocity. He also has a curveball and a changeup, and I like his ability to have a feel for all of them."

Though Teheran maintains a 92-96 mph fastball deep into games, he still could stand to get stronger. His curveball has hard downer movement, while his changeup has nice fade. He not only throws strikes with what could be three plus offerings, but he also pitches to both sides of the plate and at the knees.

Fellow rotation mates Randall Delgado (6th) and J.J. Hoover (16th) also made the list.

Nice to see them get the recognition they deserve.. All three were Carolina League All-Stars and all three ended the season in AA Mississippi. Can’t wait to watch them keep going all the way to the show.

As a side note, Julio Teheran was also on the cover of Baseball American this week.

Awesome. There are just so many reasons to feel good about this team right now.

The front office is fine. It’s the owners who suck. If they actually gave FW and Co. some money to spend, I’m sure he could pull off a good deal or two.

You realize the people in the front office are the ones behind amassing all this Minor League talent, yes?

We have a fabulous organization.

Unfortunately, it appears to be owned by a guy who spends a lot of time arguing with Jake Marley’s ghost.

Hopefully, the success this year will move Liberty into seeing us as something worth a little more investment capital.

it's the people in the scouting department

which has always, ALWAYS, been the best in the business. while they’re in the FO, they’re not what i would consider “FO” types.

That’s…odd logic…

Now why would you say that??

It’s not like 70% of the current MLB GMs come from team’s scouting departments…

Wait, no. About 70% of them actually do.

With Hellickson likely on the opening day roster for the Rays...

…..in 2011, I see no reason why Teheran couldn’t be the top overall pitching prospect in the nation at that point. I’m sure there are guys closer to the bigs and don’t expect Teheran to get that spot, but I doubt many would argue it.

Look at all those Royals.

Should be a decent team in the coming years if they don’t eff it up.

Our crappy lucky team *WAS* better than your good unlucky team.

They have some unreal young players. Moustakas, Hosmer, and Myers are all outstanding. Lamb, Montgomery, and Duffy are top notch pitchers. It’s kind of scary.

ummm

it should read:

Hosmer
Montgomery
Myers
Lamb
Moustakas
Duffy

and i’m not believing the whole “Lamb is better than Myers” crud. The only reason Myers is 3 on this list is because he’s spent 1 less year in the minors than Hosmer and Montgomery. Myers’ and Hosmer’s bats are special.

I wasn’t rating them, I was just listing them. And for me I’d go Hosmer, Moustakas, Montgomery, Lamb, Myers, Duffy, but really they’re all close.

Also, it was awesome getting to see 4 of these guys (Hosmer, Moustakas, Montgomery, and Duffy) all play in 1 day with team USA this past week. Pretty sure in 5 years that’s going to be an amazing memory.

He could start back in AA

But seeing how aggressive the Braves were with Heyward and Freeman you never know but knowing the Braves and how they take their time with their pitchers i’ll say he’ll be back in AA.

The Braves have lots of options. Beachy and Minor both look pretty promising. Gonna have to trade some of these guys and hopefully land a good position player.

What’s surprising is that Delgado isn’t any higher than sixth.

by Bronn on Oct 4, 2010 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

If you look at the guys above him...

…it makes sense. The Carolina league was loaded this year.

by cavebird on Oct 4, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s a great sign that the organization has been able to stockpile all this talent. Either they can use it (we needed 8 starting pitchers this year), or we can trade (some of) it to fill needs elsewhere in the team. Historically the team has depended first and foremost on pitching, and when that’s been successful, so has the team. So the outlook looks bright, between the three who are still in MiLB, Minor, Beachy and Medlen. (And even Hanson is only a season and a half out of the Minors.) That’s seven guys with the talent to be quality MLB starters, two of whom (Hanson, Medlen) have already proven themselves at the MLB level. Two more (Beachy, Minor) are pretty close. For those who think that Minor’s 5+ ERA is an indication that he won’t make it, take note of the 5.52, 5.54 and 5.48 ERAs posted by some guys named Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz in their rookie seasons.

So, it's official, Derek Lowe is starting game one

http://twitter.com/ajcbraves/statuses/26387215291

Not really surprising. Bobby could’ve gone with Hanson for game one, but we all expected he’d wait to use him. Probably going to be Hudson Friday and Hanson Sunday, though that hasn’t come out yet.

by Bronn on Oct 4, 2010 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

Using Hudson before Hanson allows Huddy to come back for a Game 5 if necessary, so I’d put money on that being finalized. No disrespect to Hanson, but Huddy has been the undisputed ace this year, and he’s the guy you want to be able to draw on a potential elimination game, since you can’t line him up for a decisive Game 4 unless you don’t pitch him at all early in the series.

by J-Freak on Oct 4, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

However

Hudson is money at home, so I could see them letting Hanson pitch on Friday and holding Hudson back for Sunday.

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

What?

You mean it’s not Maddux, Glavine or Smoltz?
