Playoff Roster
I've been thinking about this for a few days but I can finally start a post about it without jinxing anything. I have listed those who I think will be locks to make the 25 man playoff roster and those who have a shot (ie on the 40 man).

I'm not sosure Glaus is a lock
I can’t even remember the last time he played
The process of repeating as national champion requires more attention, said Saban, who led Alabama to a 14-0 record and the title last season. "It can't be about trying to prove something, because you've kind of already done that," he said. "It needs to be about: Do you want to be the best you can be? Are you driven to be the best player you can be? Are you driven to have the intensity, the sense of urgency, the intelligence. Are you going to work to do the things you need to do to be your absolute best? And that's not normal. Everybody thinks it's normal, but it's not normal.
If you sub out Glaus for Freeman or another pitcher there is only one pure right handed pinch hitter would be Diaz and that’s only if he isn’t starting.
Jason Heyward wins at baseball.

2-Hanson

4-Beachy

8-O’Flaherty

20- Diaz
21- Hinske
22- McClouth
23- Melky
24- Ankiel
25- Heyward
I think Minor makes it over Martinez due to being a starter. 5th Starter types are good to have for garbageman duty, plus he’s a lefty is needed.
I think Freeman makes it over Glaus due to better defense and actually being used.
Yep. It’s nothing serious, but it’s worrying to me that he hasn’t really pitched in a month.

I doublt O'Flaherty is on the roster.
He apparently had mono this summer. You just aren’t back to full strength that quickly after mono. Maybe this time next year.
DOB is saying that and that major illnesses – including brain tumor – have been ruled out. However, these persistent and continuing symptoms (dizziness and blurred vision) are very alarming from a brain / neurological standpoint and there are literally dozens of rare, but extremely serious problems that could cause the same.
The fact is (apparently) is there is no diagnosis so – very clearly – there is no basis for a lot for “nothing serious” happy talk.
I wouldn't be surprised...
…if it was just the mono. The older you are when you get it, the worse it is. I had it when I was 20-21, and I was a mess for a while. Didn’t have blurred vision, but definitely the dizziness. I was still not physically 100% a year later. Mono in July is pretty much a season ender; even if the symptoms disappear, the energy level won’t return for a while.
I’m surely hoping you’re right and indeed this is apprently the operative assumption.
All I’m saying is its still concerning because (to me) its kinda like assuming fever, nausea and vomiting, and a bad headache are just a virus – yeah, that’s usually going to be right, but it could also be lots of other, worse things that maybe haven’t been ruled out or even considered yet.
Basically, doctors can miss things.
Hrm
You have two number 16’s – so going by your lineup you have 22, not 21, on the roster.
As someone else mentioned – I’m not 100% sure if Glaus is a lock. May or may not depend on Jurrjens/Saito’s injuries. If he does go, it’ll be to be a pinch hitter. The more arms in the pen, the better. Also, no way is Minor (assuming JJ is hurt) is the 4th starter – he’s done for the season the way his arm is. Beacy will probably be the 4th starter.
Also, I’m pretty sure Freeman is NOT eligible to be on playoff roster since he was called up after September 1.
You’re also missing Diory Hernandez – he’ll make the roster simply because of his speed and because he’ll be our infield (2B, 3B, and SS) utility player Assuming Conrad/Omar get hurt.
Can someone
Who actually knows shit (not me!) confirm/deny if Freeman is eligible for playoff roster?
My understanding is that if you are called up for the first time after September 1, you are not eligible to go on playoff roster. Could be completely wrong though.
I guess as a roster replacement he could. (from here: http://www.detroittigersweblog.com/2009/08/playoff-roster-eligibility-rules/)
“There are a couple magical end of month cut-off dates in Major League Baseball. The most well known one is the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline. This deadline has no impact on playoff roster eligibility so you can put it out of your mind. The other deadline is the August 31st deadline. This is the one that counts.
To be eligible for a team’s playoff roster a player must be on either a)the 25 man active roster, b)the disabled list, c)the bereavement list, d)the suspended list as of August 31st at midnight."
“If an eligible player is injured and unable to play a club can call up any player in the organization regardless of their roster status* provided that the replacement player plays the same position (position player for position player and pitcher for pitcher), the replacement player was in the organization as of the August 31st deadline and they finished the season in the organization, and they receive approval from the commissioner.
*The player would need to be added to the 40 man roster if they weren’t on it before they could be activated. They just wouldn’t have needed to be on the 40 man roster by any other deadlines."

My guess:
C – McCann, Ross
1B – Lee, Glaus
2B – Conrad
SS – Gonzalez, Diory
3B – Infante
OF – Heyward, Diaz, McLouth, Ankiel, Hinske
SP – Hudson, Hanson, Lowe, Beachy
RP – Wagner, Venters, Kimbrel, Moylan, Farnsworth, Dunn, Martinez, Saito
The Giants are basically all right-handed, and there’s really no need for a bunch of LOOGYs. Besides, if we really wanted to play the match-up, we could have Dunn face Torres, Sanchez and then Huff.
With the way our outfield has hit lately, I say we take those 5. I could see Melky being there instead of Ankiel, but I think Ankiel’s arm could be a huge asset in the later innings, especially in a big park like AT&T. McLouth makes it for his speed, and he’s been decent in September. Diaz is our lefty killer, and Hinkse has a ton of recent post-season experience.
The infield is set, and so is the catching situation. Troy makes it because of his power threat off the bench and post-season experience. Diory makes it because he can play pretty much anywhere.
The first 3 to start are set, and I picked Beachy over JJ because of Bobby’s comments tonight. I’d probably feel safer with him anyways.
The ‘pen is locked for the most part, and we’ll have to see how EOF and Saito feel in the next few days. I’m guessing EOF won’t be in there, but I do think Saito will be back. That would’ve been 3 weeks for him to rest, and I’m thinking his bad outing on Friday was more rust than injury.

Do we need a 4th starter in round 1?...
maybe round 2, and then it’d make sense to have Beachy on there, and pitch relief to get his first post season jitters taken care of before he possibly starts a game, although by then Jair might be feeling healthy and good to go.
So I’d wonder about him vs. another primary reliever (Proctor, EOF, etc) or pinch hitter/bench depth (Melky, Freeman).
I am sure Melky will be on the roster.
Who is out, I am not sure. As I noted above, I doubt EOF is healthy (mono in July, you don’t come back that fast) and I have questions about Proctor as well. It might just be 11 pitchers, with Melky in and Beachy off for the first round.
My thoughts would be...
McCann
Ross
Lee
Glaus
Infante
Gonzalez
Hernandez
Conrad
Hinske
Heyward
McLouth
Ankiel
Diaz
Melky
Lowe
Hanson
Hudson
Wagner
Kimbrel
Saito
Venters
Moylan
Dunn
Farnsworth
Beachy
Freeman is possible off the bench, but I’d say Glaus and Melky make it as they can hit right handed and Bobby’s penchant for veterans. Proctor hasn’t pitched much the last few weeks, so I doubt he’s a legit option. EOF can rest and regain strength while Dunn fills the lefty need (and San Fran have only one left handed bat of concern anyway). Same for Jurrjens, especially since a 4th starter isn’t likely needed in the NLDS, while Beachy fills in as long relief/emergency starter, and also gets his feet wet in case Jurrjens can’t recover and we make it into the NLCS.
i think we need one on the roster at minimum
and its not minor and its prob not jurjens, and beachy has experience out of the pen
glaus will be there for sure i think
he is a world series mvp, a leader in the club house, part of the life blood of this team, and if we make the series, our best DH option… I think being back in the series after being the mvp last time might really fire him up
no melky i see
unlikely.. he won the world series last year, and proved a real clutch hitter in the post season
Um question
I been out of the loop but is Jurrjens out for the rest of the season or something?
Not definitely...
…but likely. He has a torn meniscus in his knee plus some other problem with the knee that is causing a fluid build-up. He hasn’t given up hope, but I put that odds that he pitches very low.
Beachy HAS to be in...
By the way, the only way he could be on is if he replaces an injured player (JJ or Saito or EOF).
Freeman, although he is our future, will not make the roster.
I think Glaus gets carried because of his experience, although Hinske is 5xs the hitter he is right now.
When does JJ come off of the DL?
I thought he was supposed to be ready for the NLDS?

He's not on the DL.
It was September, he was never placed on it. That being said, I think it is doubtful that he pitches again this season.
Heard a radio interview with FW this AM, less than 2 hours ago.
Said there would be a meeting today and Bobby would have it figured out by then.
Glaus has playoff experience, so Bobby might want to use him.

Glaus
At some point, we have to realize he is old and lost his ability to contribute.

My Guess
1. Infante
2. Heyward
3. Lee
4. McCann
5. Gonzalez
6. McLouth
7. Conrad
8. Ankiel
9. Lowe
10. Hanson
11. Hudson
12. Beachy
13. Minor
14. Farnsworth
15. Dunn
16. Moylan
17. Venters
18. Kimbrel
19. Saito
20. Wagner
21. Ross
22. Diory
23. Hinske
24. Diaz
25. Glaus
=> I have Minor in there because we won’t have O’Flaherty and he looked solid in his short relief appearance the other day. Beachy is there because if they decide to use a 4th starter he will no doubt be the choice as he has performed exceptionally well his first few starts in the bigs in some pretty pressure packed circumstances. Not only that but he has experience out of the pen and he was darn good at it too.
=> Frank Wren already stated that McLouth will be on the Post-Season roster. With Ankiel and McLouth on the roster I see no need to carry Melky just for him to hit choppers all over the field. We will already have Diaz who will no doubt be in the lineup just to face Sanchez/Zito
=> I say Glaus makes the post-season roster just as a RH bat off the bench. With Conrad playing full-time we only have Glaus and Diaz for RH bats anyway.
I heard from a reliable source that...
KK, Proctor, Freeman, Minor, JJ, and Boscan are not making the trip to SF. Beachy and Kimbrel were in. Not sure about Glaus, EOF, Saito, Dunn, or Martinez.
I guess we will know later today.
