Braves Play At Least One More Game, Beat Phillies 8-7
Talk about suspense, the entire season and this game alone all provided it through and through. The Braves fell behind early after a pinch-hit home run by John Mayberry Jr. Fortunately, the following inning the Braves offense came alive, scoring five runs. The Braves never looked back, despite giving up a few late runs due to an error by new third basemen Omar Infante.
Tim Hudson threw seven masterful innings, allowing just two hits in his outing. Both hits were two-run homers, but thankfully the offense was able to come together to back Hudson. Every starter had a hit, and each had an RBI aside from Brian McCann and Rick Ankiel. Omar Infante and Jason Heyward both had huge triples, and Derrek Lee blasted a solo shot to extend the lead to 6-2. Brooks Conrad had two RBI hits and played a solid second base.
Jonny Venters entered the eighth inning and allowed a single to Jimmy Rollins. The following play, Mike Sweeney hit a line drive that got through Infante's legs. The Braves then brought in Billy Wagner for the four out save. The first batter he faced, Wilson Valdez, battled through a tough at bat and singled in a run. Ben Fransisco followed with a two-RBI double, making the score 8-7.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Braves loaded the bases with one out only to see Alex Gonzalez ground into a 6-4-3 double play. At this point, I was admittedly nervous. Wagner did not look his best and the tables seemed to have turned. Thankfully, Wagner came through in the ninth in dominant fashion. Wagner struck out the side, including two nasty sliders to catch Shane Victorino and Brian Schneider looking.
The Padres and Giants are playing now. You know the deal, Padres lose and we're in, and if they win then there's a three game tie which means we play the loser of a one game playoff on Tuesday. This was a great victory in what was hopefully Bobby Cox's and Billy Wagner's last regular season game ever.

Just like everything with this team, seemingly,
this win was not easy. But they somehow came through. I am so glad that Bobby Cox’s career is not over yet.
Now, if we could just get the Giants to stop choking for 1 game. Only 1 game, though… I’m OK with them choking once the playoffs start.

If Giants win, we play them right?
by WNWDOTCOM on Oct 3, 2010 5:05 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
When would it start?
Excuse my ignorance, I’ve just been trying to focus on a Braves win today without reading, watching or following anything.
wouldnt it be better
if padres win and they have to play monday then tuesday against us. giving us rest and a advantage over both teams
I am not rooting for a play-in game.
Let’s get in the playoffs, we don’t need a do or die situation. I don’t know about everyone else but I couldn’t handle it.
no, then we would play the Reds on Thursday with us being tired
one game playoff is going to be really nerve-wrecking

Why does everyone think we would face the reds?
Under NO circumstances would we face the Reds in the first round.

You could argue it would be better
IF you could guarantee we win the playoff game. But otherwise, you run the risk of us losing.
No
I saw in The Great American Ballpark and watched them take 2 of 3 when Martin broke his finger. No team is easy, but once again I’m not rooting for a play-in.

I can see it now...
Eckstein strikes out swinging, and the ballgame is over! The Giants are NL West champions1 And they are mobbing the closer on the field! Oh, now what’s this?? Every single player on the Giants’ 40-man roster has broken one or more limbs in a raucous celebratory dog pile! And oh, God, what’s happening now? The Phillies’ team plan has mysteriously been diverted here to San Francisco, and has just crashed into the field! What a terrible tragedy for the sport of baseball here tonight.
I think we're due for a massive stroke of good luck.
Hell, if they just take out Rollins and Howard and maybe the Roys, I’ll be satisfied.
This just in:
In a freak accident, Jimmy Rollins went all Huzzah and exploded taking out Howard and the Roys!

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.
Seriously...
Why do people seem to think the Phillies played a B squad today? They had their A+ lineup out at the start, and most of them stayed in all game.
"Never doubt Derek Lowe's ability to win despite himself."
by EricGreggWasPaidOff on Oct 3, 2010 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions
The last three outs included Greg Dobbs, who was DFA’d this year, as well as backup catcher Brian Schneider. Most of the Braves’ runs were scored off someone who won’t make the playoff roster (Baez) and someone who will be the long man (Blanton). This wasn’t a B-squad? Look at the box score. The Phillies used 8 pitchers in tune-up work. The lineup at the end of this game had Bocock, Sweeney, Valdez, Schneider, and Dobbs on the field.
The Phillies did start their A+ lineup. They did not keep them in the whole game, especially the pitchers, which were handled like spring training. The whole thing was handled as a tune-up, and the Braves still nearly lost, just as they actually did lose the last two games, which were handled similarly, but not as obviously as tune-ups.
Atlanta has a good team, and in a 5 game series, anything can happen. Let’s not kid ourselves, though. This was B-squad. It was “everybody plays”. It was spring training ball. As it turned out, though (as is often the case in baseball), the AAAA team on the field at the end still nearly won. Far from being a valedictory on a fabulous season, the Braves backed in to the playoffs and have all the same questions outstanding that they did the last two months of the season — key injuries, relief pitching that is looking frayed at the seams, and starting pitching that is regressing. All the teams have flaws at this stage, of course.
I acknowledge your valid point that the Phillies started their A team, but your statement that “most of them stayed in all game” is just preposterous and it is not borne out at all by the box score.

What is both surprising and delightful is that spectators are allowed, and even expected, to join in the vocal part of the game.... There is no reason why the field should not try to put the batsman off his stroke at the critical moment by neatly timed disparagements of his wife's fidelity and his mother's respectability. ~George Bernard Shaw
Hey
me too! I mean I was always a “fan” in that I lived in Atlanta, went to a few games a year, but most years I couldn’t name you the starting lineup + pitching, and really didn’t care about the season at all. 07 was the year I started watching every day.
Indeed – such a magical season. I was young, but fortunately, not TOO young to remember it (I remember the postseason with crystal clarity, not so much of the regular season).
