2010 World Series: Giants vs. Rangers

It appears the unlikely has happened. Texas makes its first World Series appearance, and the Giants make their first since the fateful 2002 collapse against Team Rally Monkey. I thought it would be fun to have a bragging rights competition. Who wins the Series, in how many games, and who will be the Series MVP?

Star-divide

I pick the Rangers in 7. Cliff Lee is MVP with a 2-0 record 17 IP with 2 ER allowed. Ron Washington celebrates with the biggest 8 ball seen since Scarface.

Who you got?

Well seeing as I picked a World Series of...

Rays vs. Phillies, I think I’ll just sit this one out.

I don't care as long as FYF doesn't get a ring.

but since we’re playing this game. Giants in 7. Huff wins MVP.

Giants in 7

Tim Lincecum, starting games 1, 4, and 7 is the MVP, with 22 IP and 3 ER to go along with 25 Ks.

I hate the Phillies so much...

by frozendesert on Oct 24, 2010 10:23 AM EDT reply actions

Everyone kept emphasizing that Lincecum is a guy that needs his rest to be effective. I’d be a little surprised if he got three starts. But his flair is impressive, so I won’t be THAT surprised.

by BravePhin on Oct 24, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

If Lincecum is going to make 3 starts, it will have to be in Game 1, 4, and 7. IF they go into games 5,6,and 7.

...And the home, of the, ATLANTA braaaaave(s)!!!

I’ve not been here a lot this past week or so, I need to make a point to catch up on all the threads this upcoming week.
April is a long way away, and I’ll be missing all my fellow TCers around here.

And THANK YOU SO MUCH for rooting your Giants on to beat the Phils for me :-)

It will pain me to watch the Giants playing, but when the realization that I don’t have to see Dicktorino, Utley, and Rollins, that will cheer me up immensely.

To be honest, I think I’m rooting AL this year, though. I think rooting against the Rangers because of Frenchy is a bit silly. It’s not like he’ll get a ring because he made some significant contribution to the team’s championship should they win.

I’ll take Giants in 6 with Lincecum for MVP. The Rangers are better on paper, but the Giants just seem to be one of those teams of destiny that win it all. If they can beat the Phils, why not the Rangers? Plus I always like to see a team that has been around forever win its first title in a long time.

I’m mostly just glad it won’t be the Yanks, Sawx, or Phils winning the championship this year.

Can’t not root for Nolan’s team.

MVP: Frenchy! I kid, i kid – obviously its the new Smoltz/Pettitte, Cliff Lee.
Offensive MVP: Hamilton

This is baseball, thank god the Phillies, Yankees, BoSox or any other major market didn’t make the Series. The pitching should be ridonculous again.

I have a couple....

of observations. Is anyone aware of a publication or analyst, who predicted these two teams to be in the World Series? Preseason or even as late as September? What does that tell you? For me, it says, the best team does not always make it to the World Series, let alone win it.

Another thought here.I have long heard the beef abiut how the Braves were choke artists in the 90’s and only won one World Series.Hmmm. So from 1991 to and including 2000. The Braves won one World Series and were not a great team. Cox stunk as a manager and the Braves were chokers. Thanks Yankee fans. From 2001 to and including 2010,how many World Series did the Yankees win?

by mikie baseball on Oct 25, 2010 10:52 AM EDT reply actions

the only problem with that

is that the Braves won the division 5 more times after 2000, never winning another World Series and never making it out of the NLDS after 2001.
however, your point is a good one, and when (not if, haha) the Yankees haven’t won another by 2015, you should make it again. ;)

Well...

You really have to take both observations together to get to my whole point. That being that the best team does not always get into the WS, let alone win it. Those last 5 years were real good years as opposed to the dominance the Braves had in the 90s,which I maintain is the greatest baseball team I have ever seen. The playoff system is good for revenues and fans I suppose, but to determine a teams standing in the history of baseball, one needs to try to convert it back to the pre playoff days. During the 15 year period, the Braves should have been in 9 WS, I think? That is to say, they had the best record in the National League. Now, a team only needs to finish in the top 25% of finishers in the league to be eligible to win a WS. Just food for thought

I’m not saying Josh Hamilton is a bad guy, but he gets so much credit for hitting rock bottom and then making a comeback and using the Jesus Card. What about a guy who didn’t have so much talent who just worked his tail off and avoided the kinds of career derailing distractions for a decade before making the majors? I guess America’s a sucker for a good redemption story.

by Sidbreamsknees on Oct 25, 2010 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

Using the Jesus Card

Really? That’s a low blow & insinuates that his faith in Christ is a gimmick & not sincere. I’ve been where Hamilton was & I’m currently at where Hamilton is. If that makes me a sucker, so be it.

If you’ve never actually interacted with Hamilton, then, honestly, you don’t have the first idea about him. Dude is insanely gracious with fans, talking to everyone (humbly) and signing autograph after autograph, well beyond almost anyone else of his caliber that I’ve ever seen (although Andy Pettite is a close second, IMO).

Seriously, I know Hamilton’s had his struggles with addiction, and I understand your point about the religious stuff, but he’s a pretty good dude.

Pulling skeletons

out of Hamilton’s closet doesn’t neccessairly make him insincere. It does show he’s a fallible human being, prone to make mistakes like the rest of us. You could’ve made your point about the unrepresented masses of baseball without taking a swipe at Hamilton’s character or faith.

I don’t doubt that he’s a good guy. It just irritates me that people seemingly go out of their way to talk about what a great human being he is and how he’s so inspirational simply because he made a comeback. Whereas someone who never made catastrophic mistakes and didn’t get millions of dollars at an early age whilst being blessed with otherworldly abilities gets overlooked. He’s a human being that’s really good at baseball.

What would you like, a pat on the back and congratulations for not being a drug-addicted loser anymore??

I’m sorry I didn’t sign some meaningless diploma giving you credit for acting like an upstanding member of society after your horrible past experience, which was of your own doing.

I’m sorry I never went out and treated you to a meal for doing what 90% of the population does without having to lie, cheat, and steal through x amount of years in order to just scrape by while getting its fix.

I’m sorry you don’t get credit for overcoming all these abhorrent, self-placed obstacles while Josh Hamilton gets it mentioned every nite on television, with folks saying how great it is for him.

But guess what?? None of those toxins Hamilton force-fed into his body allowed him to hit a baseball as far as he can. The drugs didn’t improve his defensive ability. They don’t affect his ability to hit a 3-1 fastball in the bottom of the seventh, so I see absolutely no reason why it’s mentioned in that spot.

So why must I, an upstanding citizen who’s never had to put society through hell because I was too selfish to live my life the right way, give two figs about the Josh Hamilton story, beyond what he can do on a baseball field??

There are literally hundreds of ballplayers in the majors that are doing great things, giving to charity and helping those in need, that deserve 10 times the praise that Hamilton receives for their actions. They didn’t take a few years off to pollute their body and completely fuck their lives over. That doesn’t mean they never faced the temptations – it means they were wise enough to overcome them without stumbling into the depths those temptations provide.

His story isn’t moving. It’s disgusting. He’s very fortunate that it didn’t turn out as badly as it could have. But that doesn’t make it pretty. It doesn’t make him likable for that reason alone. It makes him lucky to be alive, nothing more or less.

So pardon me if I don’t ascribe to be like Josh Hamilton, because there’s better role models on cereal boxes (and I’m not even talking Wheaties…Toucan Sam has done a better job teaching our nation’s youth how to live right than Hamilton has). Sorry for not bowing down and worshiping the guy for finally figuring out how to live life in a non-destructive fashion after all these years.

Sorry if I never once point at Josh Hamilton and tell the children of the world to be like him, because he was able to overcome so much. Because, if they lead their lives correctly, they should never find themselves in the same predicament that Hamilton put himself in.

I’m all for redemption stories, I truly am. But no one ever praises the hare for finishing the race after the tortoise. Hamilton is the proverbial hare, giving up on life for years while life went and passed him by. I’m glad he decided to wake up and get back into the race, but he shouldn’t be applauded for it.

And I’m sorry in advance for all the youth that have recently begun to look up to him, and think to themselves, “Well, if I get addicted, I can overcome it. Josh Hamilton did,” before taking their first hit.

this has been a great series to watch so far. Plenty of offense (& who would of thought that it would be coming from the Giants). The fans in San Fran going nuts. Lots of high energy baseball going on. I figure Fox was all depressed about the ratings they would get since the Yankees or Phils didn’t make it but if people aren’t tuning in for this series it’s their loss.
