Atlanta Braves Fan Confidence Poll

Every other Monday this off-season Talking Chop presents the Atlanta Braves fan confidence poll. This poll and therefore your confidence level should encompasses several areas of the team. These areas include, but are not limited to, the team’s ownership, current management, talent, minor-league system, general playing ability on the field, and of course during the off-season, how our off-season is going. The poll will stay open for 48 hours, and then the results will be posted and graphed against the previous weeks.

I expect the Braves to make the playoffs next year with their current roster, but Wren needs to make some upgrades in the outfield for them to be a true championship contender.

The good news is he should have a decent amount of payroll flexibility after declining the options of and non-tendering unproductive players plus of course the Braves have plenty of surplus pitching to trade to upgrade the offense.

I only voted as low as 7 because I’m not sure he’ll actually make the significant moves I’d like to see.

This.

Addition by Subtraction. Time to dump the dead weight. I don’t expect any blockbuster action this off season. Jurrjens, Minor and Beachy are our most valuable trade pieces, and are not that valuable right now. I think Wren will sign a couple of “lessor” free agents, bring up some minor leaguers and wait until June or July for a blockbuster trade for a controllable stud outfielder.

Werth sends it to -7

I think he should not be a target (unless he’s willing to accept a 3 yr deal, which he won’t be).

I said 8. It’s still tough to shake that horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that was created by their play at the end of the season and in the playoffs, but I know this is a great organization. The braves need to get chipper, jair, and medlen back healthy and bring in at least 1.5 new starting outfielders, even if they are only somewhat above average guys. Melky, ankiel, conrad, diaz – see ya later.

MASN Announcer: "Ususally they have what they call here 'the privilege,' and that's what bobby cox calls it when he let's the veteran guys swing away on 3-0. This is not such a hitter."

Jason Heyward: Single up the middle, ballgame.

It occurs to me that if you could somehow fuse Ankiel and McLouth into one person, you would have the ultimate defensive outfielder. He would still be a black hole on offense, but still.

by d.ross on Oct 18, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

McLouth is good defensively except he has no arm. Ankiel has a great arm, but is terrible at all other aspects.

by king of games on Oct 18, 2010 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

ankiel at least has decent range. when compared to melky, he’s a godsend.

6.

There are some significant holes to fill with relatively limited funds. Should be a solid team next year, but a return to the postseason is far from a sure thing.

Been there most of the season. While the end was not what I would like to have seen, there is a solid foundation for the future. While we could use upgrades at a few positions, which team could not. We made the playoffs, although we limped in. We improved upon last year’s record, which was a vast improvement over 2008. We are difinitely headed in the right direction.

by DawgB on Oct 18, 2010 12:20 PM EDT reply actions

I gave them an 8.

I basically agree with all your points, but Liberty Media keeps me from going higher than 8.

by Tarkus on Oct 18, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Liberty Media.

I think that they have given a pretty good chunk of change for the Braves to work with. We just need to shed some payroll deadwood and use that money for a couple of productive bats, and preferably one of those bats will be big.

I cringe every time I think about Ted Turner and that billion dollars he pledged to the UN, and then there was that story a couple-three years ago where he expressed his desire to buy back the team, but couldn’t because he didn’t have the cash.

Pitching – 10
Hitting and fielding – 6
Total of 8, but -1 for uncertainty with Chipper

I hope Wren uses some of the surplus pitching to get a bat (JJ + c/b level prospect for Rasmus would be very nice)

I’ll only go higher if we deport Nate to Finland. And maybe trade Gonzalez for Yunel.

Wren hasn't really made a bad move.

You can argue Yunel, but Bobby was the one who wanted him gone, and the way he was playing Wren was lucky to get a SS with comparable D with at least a little pop. Ankiel and Farnsey didn’t cost us anything, and they were the reason we won our only playoff game.

Playoff year, lots of young talent. Hopefully Wren will do something this off season to make it a nine.
