Maybe at first.
I think he’ll prove himself. Not that Jonny isn’t great, but he doesn’t quite have the high heat and strikeout stuff you like to see in your closer.
Trevor Hoffman had a pretty good career...
With far less heat and strikeout stuff than Venters.

True.
I think I’d be comfortable with closer by committee, too. Or with Venters taking it himself. Or Kimbrel alone. We’ve got lots of good options.
I hope not.
I think it is better to have one designated closer.

I don't see what the benefit is of everyone trying to be the first one to call us losing
I mean, what the hell good does it do a fan to say, “we’re through.”
Is it just so important to you to sound smart or to not be a homer that you just have to call it as soon as the situation gets rough?
In any case, when you say it’s over down 1 run you just sound like a moron.

See you guys next season.
It’s somehow fitting that Melky ends it on a useless chopper.
It’s also incredibly fitting that Bobby, a man who is known in part for his contentious dealings with umpires, retires in a series where the umpires did their damnedest to ensure that Bobby’s team could not advance.

To take offense at the fact that the Braves have made the postseason 15 of the last 20 years just shows your age and your lack of understanding of how difficult it is to get into the playoffs and how much of a crapshoot the playoffs are. Any team can win a best of 5/best of 7 series. Hell, even the Royals and Pirates will take on occasional series from a top team.

I’d love to see several, but I also don’t anticipate much.
Think about it, the pitching staff is set.
1b, 2b, 3b will not see any changes unless Chipper decides he can’t make it (not happening).
RF is taken.
SS could change, but I doubt it with the cheap option (not arguing whether it’s a good idea, but the Braves I think will probably pick up his option.
And the bullpen might see a veteran or two signed, but otherwise is probably set.
Only LF and CF are likely to see any real change, unless we unload a SP (which I believe we would do if Medlen was healthy) (I don’t include KK there since he won’t be much loss and won’t net much in return).
We need a guy who can hit for power

Oh goodness, the emotion in his voice is killing me.

Yeah
I’m amazingly not choked up. I think I came to peace with it. It was surprising but it’s gonna be weird not seeing him in the dugout.
Here’s to Bobby throwing out the first pitch in the World Series next year when we win it all!

The best/worst part is
The Giants didn’t beat us. We beat ourselves (along with helps from the umpires).

What hurts the most was
that in every game we were one play away.

Guys...let's just enjoy this season and the run we made.
There will be PLENTY of time to rosterbate.

Bobby's amazing
He’s choking up and still crediting the players and his coaches. Always selfless.

from the beginning
I looked at this as a trade for Vizcaino and Dunn… and ya know what, we shafted them.
Thanks Bobby: Greatest manager of all time.

Alright guys and gals....
It’s been a great season, and i want to thank all the folks here at TC for making this site the greatest site on SBnation. You guys do a hell of a job…and I’m proud to be a member. I’m also proud to be a fan of the Atlanta Braves. It’s only going to get better next season…bank on it.

2nd biggest offseason priority
(After getting a good hitting OF and a good fielding CF)
Signing some of our young guys to long deals. We’re are in win now mode for sure, we’ve got the team for it, but I think we also need to be in win now AND later mode, b/c we’ve got the guys for a long run if we can hold em.
Good thing for the young guys
They tasted it…now they’ll stop at nothing to get back!

Haha
Hopefully they’ll do better than the young guys in ’05. (They are better though, so that helps).
less of a bridge, more of a rebuilding project bearing fruit.

Just saw an interview with him on TBS. Just made me think about his (and the rest of the Phillies) sheer douchiness.
A great year for the Braves
they gave us one hell of a ride, see you all next year
GO BRAVES!!

Great Season
Going to try and control these tears and take the rest of the night off. Going to go out tomorrow night and have a few drinks to remember this great season, and most of all, reminisce about the great career that Bobby Cox had.
See you guys next year.
Go Braves!
Just think guys…..
Heyward with a full season of experience.
Hanson in his 3rd season.
Huddy, Lowe, Jurrjens, Minor, Beachy, etc. in the rotation.
Prado with another year of experience.
McCann with another great season….
Next year is going to be friggin awesome!
teheran in the wings...

next year
1b: Freddie
2b: Marteeeeeeen
ss: Seabass
3b: Chipper
OF: JHey, Diaz?/McLouth, and ??? (hopefully a run at Werth or Crawford)
C: BMac
Bench: Infante, Hinske, Ross
SP: Huddy, Lowe, Hanson, JJ, Minor or Beachy (that’s a sick rotation…)
RP: Venters, Kimbrel, EOF, Moylan, Dunn…
ok… needed to do that… take a look at the future as an exercise to get me out of the funk that game/series left me in…
that was one hell of a season, full of ups and downs, never a dull moment… and the future sure does look bright. Thanks Bobby! you’re the only manager Iv’e ever really known as a Braves fan, and it’s going to be weird not hearing you yelling encouragements from the dugout next year. You helped build an amazing franchise that we fans can be mighty proud of.
If it’s any consolation, at least it wasn’t the Phillies who ended Bobby’s career. We’d never hear the end of it from their fans.
I’d like nothing more than to watch the Phillies go down in flames.
The birth of Jason Heyward was God’s punishment for the sins of the people in New York and Philly.

Erm, how are they racist?
Perhaps ill-informed, or misguided you feel, but I do not see how it’s racist? What race are the folks at TGP hating on?
The reason why people outside of Atlanta have some… Distaste for, and find the Braves mildly racially charged is the name and the tomahawk chop. It’s sort of a P.R. disaster if you look at it from the outside.
Imagine if there was a team called the San Jose Japs, and when they were batting played http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8d/AsianRiff_koto.ogg while all their fans pulled the corners of their eyes up. You’d go “That’s pretty racist.”
You guys chased Chief Nocahomer outta town because it was basically a minstrel show, and rightly so. It’s time to retire the chop as being a relic of a differently, less enlightened time also.
by JamesFromPhilly on Oct 12, 2010 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions
I have to agree with this.
Surely there is something novel we can come up with to replace the chop.

agreed
i can only stomach cheering for the giants in the series against the phillies tho…then it’s for whichever al team gets thru…as much as i hate to say it
