Not Conrad's Fault. It was Bobby's. HUFF hits lefties better than righties. LOOK AT YOUR MATCHUPS.

Unbelievable
That was a terrible managerial call. Huff has a much better chance of hitting a lefty throwing 90, than a righty throwing 96. Look at the batter your are matching up with if you’re playing Matchups. This isn’t freaking rocket science.

That is NOT Conrad’s fault
It’s COX’s fault for taking Kimbrel out. This is going to be your guy. Let him close it out. I am so fucking disgusted with this overmanaging arbitrary matchup coaching. Absolutely ridiculous.

If Bobby was paying attention this last week, he should have known that was a distinct possibility.

Brooks Conrad is not capable of fielding at a major league level at second or third. It should have been Diory out there today.

by SS451 on Oct 10, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Brooks has not been this bad before

The mental weight of his struggles is hurting him. That error in the 9th was a 1/1000000 type of thing, something no one expects. You can blame the manager for not predicting that, but it’s not his fault. Bobby just doesn’t have a lot to work with.

by Bronn on Oct 10, 2010 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

He's got Diory Hernandez.

Cornad: Bad bat, no glove at all.
Diory: No bat, ok glove.

We’ve already seen how errors can absolutely kill this team’s chances in literally dozens of games this season. Given that, how can Bobby in good conscience run Conrad out there, knowing that the man can’t field his position?

It’s just a refusal to think outside the box. That’s on Bobby.

by SS451 on Oct 10, 2010 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Conrad was a decent hitter during the season

Decent, not great. I guess because he’s not hitting in the series that means he sucks? Maybe we should take heyward out too.

by Bronn on Oct 10, 2010 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Mostly pinch-hitting, so favorable-ish matchups

And not against high-level pitching like the Giants are throwing out there. Given his track record (not just from this season), you can’t expect much out of Conrad’s bat. Bobby acknowledges that by having him sac bunt in every close spot in this series. Diory can lay down a bunt just as well as Conrad.

There is a difference between their offensive value, but because neither of them is likely to do anything valuable with the bat, you’ve got to look to the glove. And there, it’s just no contest. Conrad isn’t capable of major league defense, and Diory is. He should be starting.

by SS451 on Oct 10, 2010 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't get this attitude.

Do you think defense isn’t a skill? Do you think you or I could go out there and play second or third base in the major leagues? If not, then you should be able to acknowledge that it’s possible, even likely from what we’ve seen of Conrad that he simply is not capable of competent defense, just like, for example, many pitchers are not capable of competent hitting.

If Bobby had Derek Lowe hitting cleanup, you’d have no problem calling that a bad call on his part. And yet when he obstinately continues to make Brooks Conrad try to do a job he’s not good enough to do, noting that is “making excuses for Brooks.” Why? It’s Brooks’ job to attempt any task his manager gives him. But it’s Bobby’s job to know when a guy is not capable of getting the job done.

It isn't Brooks' fault he's not good enough.

And it isn’t his job to take himself off the field for suckitude. Bobby is supposed to evaluate players and make these decisions, and Bobby has failed to make the right call in this case, with catastrophic (though not entirely predictable) results.

You’ve made ONE comment ever before this game. I’m not sure you realize that the players on the field were the ones that lost this game, most notably Brooks Conrad, the baseball “player” at second base who made two errors than cost the team two runs and countless pitches from Hudson.

Look at Huff’s Numbers right v. lefty. He’s a better hitter against lefties. Bobby clearly didn’t even KNOW that because there’s NO OTHER REASON to make that move. NONE.

by Spazio Elutherius on Oct 10, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

MY POINT IS

Conrad’s never in the position to make that error after Kimbrel gets out Huff. No way huff catches up to hard throwing righty as he does against softer lefty. Cox “worked” the matchup RIGHT into Huff’s FAVOR. That is unforgivable.

by Spazio Elutherius on Oct 10, 2010 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbrel wasn’t really throwing many strikes. He’d already allowed two baserunners. And Mike Dunn isn’t exactly a soft-throwing lefty either.

I don’t feel right blaming Brooks for a run that almost certainly would have scored anyway. PLUS, you can’t tell me that Brooks at 2nd is any more viable than Glaus at 3rd, he could have started and moved Omar to 2nd.

Not to mention Brooks error was just the go ahead run. I still say Kimbrel gets the save if he stays out there.

But he could have put Diory out there for the 9th

He could have left Kimbrel in to pitch against the guy that owns lefties instead of putting a lefty out there.

Diory can field 2nd. Period. When you’re up in the top of the 9th you put your best defensive players out there, especially when you’re not taking offense off the field to do so!

That same manager also doesn’t take out Kimbrel. Let’s not even discuss pinch running a catcher for a catcher (which didn’t matter, ultimately).

Say what you want about mismanaging

Brooks Conrad is a professional baseball player. He gets paid a lot of money to make routine plays like that. No excuse

Kenshin Kawakami is a professional baseball player

Who is paid a lot of money to pitch. And yet, that is not a justification managers can use to actually ask him to pitch if they have better options available.

by SS451 on Oct 10, 2010 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

But Bobby doesn't know what play is going to need to be made.

All that he knows is that Conrad is far less capable than Diory Hernandez of making any of them. And therefore, the right call is Conrad out (of all the games), Diory in.

I've had enough for tonight...

…gonna try and think of something else the rest of the evening.

Nite all.

I still think we can win the next two games. Try and not kill anythng tonight. See everyone later.

I already punched a hole in my wall during a Falcons game a few weeks back.

I am holding my breath and counting to 1000 to try and make it through the night.

The whole team played like crap today

If we could have put together ANY offense, at any point in the game besides the 8th, we most likely win.

Can we let

Chino manage tomorrow?

and not let Conrad into the park?

I give up, Im done watching baseball this year

by knarf on Oct 10, 2010 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

Chino

did seem to let our pitchers pitch on Friday and he did remove Brooks from the game for defensive purposes… Hell, he’s got my vote

Yeah when you look at those moves, Chino had to be calling the shots.

No way Bobby replaces Brooks that game, but leaves him in after 2 erras.

Alright.

Looking forward to winning the next two games. Night y’all.

who to blame?

1. Conrad = 3 errors. cost 2 unearned run a lot of unnecesary pitches to the pitchers.
2. Bobby = bring Dunn ot face Huff
3. Emmel = Crazy Strikezone
4. Starting Lineup offense = 3 hits (1 from Hudson) 1 BB (Lee in the 1st inning), a ton of K, 0 Run.

by joshant on Oct 10, 2010 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

Add to Bobby's ledger

That he was the one who decided to start Brooks at 2B over Diory Hernandez or Omar Infante (with Diory playing 3B).

Bullshit Bobby cost us this game. Pure and simple

damn. Injuries are killing us. We need Chip and Prado back.

Bobby Cox big Donkey balls

Ok I get it, Bobby loves Brooks because he reminds him of himself. Thats why he will play his horrible glove over Troy Glaus, Eric Hinske and Diory Hernndez. Why in the fuck would you leave him out there after even the FIRST ERROR!! This is the fucking playoffsBobby you don’t get second chances!!
Bobby sucks, I can’t stand it. 20 years of this shit I have watched. All totally blowing it in the playoffs. Taking out Kimbrel was unbelievably stupid but having Conrad in there after you got a lead was unforgivable. If Diory makes that error, I can forgive that because you are trying to at least put the better fielder out there. Not doing that just tempts fate and fate bitchslapped Bobby AGAIN.
GOd I’m glad he gone.

Conrad: “I feel terrible. I wish I could dig a hole and sleep in it.”
Hudson: “We love Conrad more now than ever.”

Wouldn't you love him more after he did something good?

That goes against the principles of behavioral conditioning.

looks like

the team already has Conrad on suicide watch

by knarf on Oct 10, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

f Brooks

those weren’t plays that an above avg fielder makes. those are plays that any competent-below avg player makes. it was embarrassing watching him and embarrassing that #6 did not remove him from the game.

I betcha Hinkse doesn't

The one good thing?

is we are one loss closer to the F Gonzalez era!! One would hope that he won’t get outmanaged in every big game like #6. Also maybe TP may go too!:)

by NorCalAtlFan on Oct 10, 2010 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

If you think Gonzalez is the answer you are lost.

We will probably hire him but we will be sorely disappointed.

by Creek Johnson on Oct 10, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Fredi Gonzalez IS Bobby.

Completely conventional, by the book, no-value-added manager. And he doesn’t have Bobby’s legendary rep or rapport with the players to make up for it. Christ, I hope he isn’t our next manager.

by SS451 on Oct 10, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I know

but we all know he is going to be the next manager and quite frankly, I got tired of #6 in 1998. so ANYONE at this point is an upgrade to me.

by NorCalAtlFan on Oct 10, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Where will be umpiring Emmel tomorrow?

if he will start on 3rd base, i would try to hit him throwing the bat from HP

and when i run throught 3rd base i would make a “Gaby Sanchez”

by joshant on Oct 10, 2010 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

what about this lineup tomorrow?

Infante 2B
Heyward RF
DLee 1B
BMac C
Glaus 3B
Hinske LF
Gonzalez SS
McLouth CF
Lowe P

by joshant on Oct 10, 2010 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

Diaz instead of Hinske in LF because Bumgarner’s a lefty… but other than that I think its spot-on

"C'mon Chip!" Bobby Cox

by ByrneSupremacy on Oct 10, 2010 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

the real question is...

what lineup will they really go with?

by Creek Johnson on Oct 10, 2010 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm

because it’s #6’s last game:
Infante
Heyward
D Lee
Diaz
Gonzalez
Conrad
Ross
Cabrera
Lowe

why would he suddenly do anything different?

by NorCalAtlFan on Oct 10, 2010 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I would agree except we badly need offense too

"C'mon Chip!" Bobby Cox

by ByrneSupremacy on Oct 10, 2010 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Basically a matter of taste.

I feel like it will hurt more to watch them bumble their way around the field and play like Little Leaguers than it will to watch their slow strangulation at the plate.

by SS451 on Oct 10, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't see why you don't leave Kimbrel in

Is he the closer or not? Everything indicated that he was filling in for Wags. These others guys aren’t used to closing. You don’t pull Wags for a matchup and he shouldn’t have done that to Kimbrel either.

by Creek Johnson on Oct 10, 2010 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

it's bobby

just be surprised he wasn’t changing pitchers mid ab.
