The Players We Love to Hate Team
Ok, I'll start this off by admitting that I borrowed stole this idea from the good folks over at the Good Phight.
Basically, this is going to be a complete team of players who we, as Braves fans (or otherwise) love to hate, for whatever reason. I will post mine, and I'd like to see everyone else's and their comments. I could probably save a lot of time by just posting the names of all the Mets, Phillies and Yankees, but that is too easy.
...Go ahead and jump...
First Base: Ryan Freaking Howard. I mean, seriously? We are going to continue to pitch to this guy right in his meat zone? I don't think it is a big stretch of the imagination to say that Ryan Howard single-handedly cost us a playoff berth this past season. I think he hit something like 90% of his home-runs against us last year. Walk the guy, or just don't give him anything to hit, dammit!
Second Base: Martin Prado...haha, just kidding. Dustin Pedroia. Anyone who can't hit the high fastball doesn't deserve to win the MVP. Seriously? Pedrioa was the MVP???
Third Base: Normally, I would go with David Wright, even though I actually really like him as a player. But, since he was non-existant this past season, that leaves A-Roid as the obvious choice. I hate the guy, and it isn't just because he is a good baseball player for the Yankees. I really think he is filled with darkness on his insides and is just an all around perfect example of a total d-bag, baseball skills be damned.
Shortstop: Derek Calm-Eyes Captain Clutch Gold Glove Jeter. Jeter is a really really good baseball player. He is also, by most accounts, a really really good person. My hate for DJ is not like my hate for his left-side-of-the-infield partner. My hate for Jeter is spawned by everyone else's love for the guy. If Derek Jeter were a San Diego Padre for his whole career, he would be largely unrecognized. He is an below average defensive shorstop with a relly good eye at the plate, and decent power. However, I have a problem with the media's infatuation with him. He is not the greatest Yankee to ever play the game. Heck, he may not even be one of the top TEN Yankees to ever play the game. And that cut-off, backhand flip from the 1B side throw that he made to tag out Jeremy Giambi (who apparently has the base-running skills of a retarded monkey) in the ALCS annoys me to no end. The fact that I had to see that replay (or the one of him "diving" into the stands to catch that pop-foul) for 10 years straight makes me want to puke.
Right Field: Barry Bonds. I really can't stand the guy. I think steroid users are wrong. I think they cheated. But, I also think that a large portion of baseball players were doing it. I have no problems with Mark McGwire. I have no qualms with Sammy Sosa or even Rafael Palmiero. I DO have problems with someone who is arguably one of the most arrogant dicks I have ever seen. That, ladies and gentlemen, is Mr. Bonds.
Center Field: I know a lot of you guys really, REALLY dislike Shane Victorino. I can't hate that guy though. He is an incredible baseball player, and I wish he played for us. No, my choice for most hated CF is Kosuke Fukodome. Is anyone more undeserving of the praise they get than this guy? An All-Star game? Really??? I mean, to be fair, he is a decent ballplayer. However, when you realize that he is making over $12M per year, you may understand that he probably has a REALLY good agent and publicist.
Left Field: Manny Ramirez. Do I even need to explain this one?
Starting Pitcher: There are many options here: Cole Hamels, Micah Owings (just because he out-hits us by himself - Josh Johnson is in this boat too), but my answer may (or may not) surprise several of you: John Smoltz. Smoltz was outstanding for us. He was dominant and versatile. He was brilliant when we needed him most. He was everything we could have ever wanted - and then he left...over a couple of million dollars. Well, ya know, a man has to get paid. Fair enough. But he didn't stop there, and to my knowledge, he still hasn't stopped. He runs his mouth at every opportunity about how unfairly the Braves treated him. Well, guess what, John. The Braves have arguably one of the best pitching staffs in baseball now, while you are out on the streets looking for a job after being dumped by your previous employers - one of which, was a performance based dump. Good luck getting more money this year than the Braves would have been willing to pay you!
Closer: K-Rod. Nobody is worth that much money for getting 3-ish outs in the 9th inning of a game. Nobody. Mariano Rivera would be an easy choice here too, but he actually doesn't let people get on base. He is a dominant pitcher, something that K-Rod is not.
Manager: Charlie Manuel. Nice job getting homefield advantage for your own team during that All-star game. Fittingly, it was a majority of your own players who couldn't beat the AL, so I'd say that was a bit of irony biting you in the butt.
EDIT: I forgot to add a catcher: Giovani Soto. I am still sore over the 2008 All Star game in which the Cubs stuffed the boxes for this guy.

So the guys that would make my team are not necessarily guys that play well against us, but mostly guys that I think are constantly overraterd by the media
C: Geovany Soto
1B: Prince Fielder (sorry, he’s not overrated, just a slovenly arrogant blimp…picking fights in the clubhouse? classy prince(ess))
2B: Pedroia. Way overrated playing for BOS
3B: ARod. What is there to say that hasn’t already been said?
SS: Jimmy Rollins. The guy had one good year and people still think he’s one of the best shortstops in the game. please.
RF: Bonds. What he said^
CF: 2 months ago I would’ve put Melky for the overhype (facepalm). Now I’ll go with Victorino. His cleating of McCann last year was so douchy…him getting tossed from CF by the plate umpire was one of my favorite moments of last year
LF: Alfonso Soriano. He’s good, but also overhyped. Also something about his little jump step before a catch pisses me off.
SP: Brett Myers. Dude beat his wife. The HR barrage on opening day last year off him was also fantastic
RP: Joba Chamberlain. SO. OVERRATED.
Closer: Papelbon. He’s good, but overrated too. He’s also a complete douche on the mound, way to overly-celebratory of strikeouts
I don’t think I have ever heard that about Fielder. Do you have a story?

I wonder if he’s been crossed up with Zambrano, who has picked more than his share of fights. I do remember Fielder trying to storm the LA clubhouse after Mota beaned him, though.
Yeah, but chalk that one up to immaturity. That is the only negative thing I have heard about Prince…

NVM, googled it. Apparently he went after Manny Parra:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080805&content_id=3255585&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
he also went after Guirermo Mota. after a game, Mota threw at him in the game and Fielder tried to confront him in the away team clubhouse.
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Myers
is a total asshat by any yardstick. Have you seen the infamous vid of him dropping f-bombs left and right on a reporter during a post-horrible-performance interview? Beats his wife and treats everybody else like shit too. It’s guys like him that piss me off the most- I’d trade everything i own to be a MLBer for one day, and assholes like him just piss all over there good fortune and act like clowns. Media overrating I can deal with, it comes with the territory, but it’s him, Bonds, never-live-up-to-my-potential-because-I-don’t-care-that-much J.D. Drew, etc., that really grind my gears.
u hold ur tongue about JD Drew…
in 09 he was the third most valuable RF (i don’t count Zobrist bc he played all over the field and i dont really know what position he played primarily)
in 08 he was 7th
in 07 he was really bad like 27th or something so ya he sucked… but in 07 he son was seroiusly ill the entire year and although he never made mention of it…I’m pretty sure he struggled with that throughout the season… im not giving him a pass, but hes got a decent excuse here
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

i meant to keep going…
06 he was 3rd again.
05 he was 11th
04 he was 1st.
03 he was 17th
buit considering he has a career 896 OPS and is an above average defender in the OF… u can’t really say he didn’t live up to his potential, becuase he’s pretty damn good…
and just bc he doesnt get all excited everytime he doesnt something he gets paid to do, I think its unfair to paint him as someone who doesnt care.
P.S. i used fangraphs valuation for his ranking against RFers
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Why are y'all putting Bonds...
a career LF with no arm, in right? Over 23000 innings, 3 of them in right, a decent bit in CF, but the VAST majority were in LF.
I had him in LF originally, but had to put Manny somewhere.

Which is foolish...
Manny was a RF in Cleveland; and in his career has over 7700 innings in RF vs. 3 for Bonds.
Tuche’. I forgot someone was dumb enough to put Manny in RF…I just think of him as a LF now and I knew that Bonds played RF.

Fixed
“Heck, he may not even be definitely is not one of the top TEN Yankees to ever play the game.”
Here are Pujols's stats: 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000. That's right. He is batting a thousand, with a thousand OBP (naturally), and every hit has been a home run, and thus his OPS is a perfect 5.000.
I thought about that, but couldn’t come up with a list of ten off the top of my head. I’ll try now though:
The Babe
Lou
Dimaggio
Mantle
Berra
Lazzeri
Ford
Rivera (not because of the saves…)
Billy Martin
Maris
Rizzuto – although, I think Jeter may be a bit better at the plate.
Mattingly
Jackie (although, I think he may be a tad overrated due to his non-performance based accomplishment)
Larson…maybe, IDK about this one

Rizzuto had comparable numbers at a much lesser offensive position in a much harder era, IMO.

Rizzuto’s OPS is 706
Jeter’s is 847
Rizzuto’s OPS + is 93 (which means he is below avg considering his time frame and the park he played in..i think park factor is taken into accoutn i think)
Jeter’s is 121 (which means he is well above avg)
they rnt close… unfortunately we have no data for how good of a fielder RIzzuto was, but he was supposed to be pretty good..
i dont care that SS wasnt an offensive position back then… he wasnt very good and Jeter is… Jeter is head and shoulders above rirruto
P.S. who is Lazzeri?

My List.
My list has different reasons at each position….
C- Jason Varitek. Just a terrible terrible catcher, maybe had a FEW good years but is overpaid like crazy.
1- Prince Fielder. That was retarded when he stormed the Dodger clubhouse. Also I think he’s a little full of himself.
2- Luis Castillo. He’s paid too much.
3- Mark Reynolds. I hate that players can go out to the plate and strikeout a crazy amount and it being overshadowed by home runs.
SS- J Roll. He’s not as good as people try to make it and his comments predicting the Phillies winning in 5(or 6 i forgot) made me pissed.
LF- Manny Ramirez- Self Explained
CF- Carlos Beltran- He’s overrated
RF- Jeff Francouer. I love him. I hate him. Either way he’s on my list…..for all the heartbreak he brought me last season.
Sp- Brett Myers- Beating his wife.
Carlos Zambrano- Temper Tantrum
Josh Beckett- Wayy overrated
Ricky Nolasco- I was at the game where he slaughtered us and I hate him now.
Derek Lowe- For his premature comments recently and for his falling out this season. Although i’m hopeful for a rebound he still makes my list.
RP- Manny Acosta. Makes me cry everytime i see him on the field
RP- K-Rod. OVEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRPAID/OVERRRRRRRRRRAted.
RP- MOTA. For his use of steroids.
RP- Papelbon. Great closer. broke my heart this postseason.
RP- JC Romero. Performance enhancing drugs.
I agree in all of it, especially with JC Romero for the fact that im puertorrican and that douche blew us a huge win over USA

I wont field a team…but list a few guys.
I hate Sammie Sosa and how sheepishly he handled the steriods issue, i really dont hate him bc he used, just the way he handled it… tons of players use and we dont know who did or didnt, and its not for me to dislike them bc they made a decision they thought was best for them.
I hate Brett Myers for all the reasons mentioned.
I want to hate Barry Bonds, but i loved him so much as a kid I struggle to complete my hate of him.
I really dislike Ryan Howard and have no clue why, except he continues to succeed and no one pitches to his weakness (hard stuff, in on his hands).
I hate BJ Upton with a passion… he loafs in the OF (he still ends up being pretty good, but damn is that guy a lazy punk)
I hate Zambrano bc he just seems like a Douche, and growing up in MLW i have a slightly increased hatred for players who reside in CHI.
I hate Alfonso Soriano, bc of his refusal to change positions back in the day and he just seems like a douche.
and then i hate players who take AB and IPs away from my fantasy players (just kidding….mostly)

Some guys I love to hate, and some I hate to hate. This is a list of both:
C- AJ Pierzynski
1B- James Loney
2B- Brandon Phillips
3B- Emilio Bonifacio
SS- Miguel Tejada, Christian Guzman, Yuniesky Bethancourt
RF- Brad Hawpe, Michael Cuddyer
CF- BJ Upton
LF- Ryan Braun, Carlos Lee, Alfonso Soriano
DH- David Ortiz
SP- Joe Saunders
RP- Bobby Jenks
Some of these guys are slackers, some are tools and some just rub me the wrong way for some reason. Perhaps my new year’s resolution should have been to be less judgmental.

1B Teixiera – he could have told us that there was no way in hell he was gonna stay in Atlanta before we gave up the farm for him.
2B Pedroia – it’s already been said but MVP? Seriously?
SS Jeter – most overrated player of all time? Yay, he’s won rings. So has Robert freaking Horry.
3B Wright – I’ll never forget him winning the gold glove over Chipper.
LF Damon – “I’ll never be a Yankee!” Whatever, loser.
CF Victoriano – not sure why. I’d just like to punch him in the face if I ever met him.
RF Drew – the prototype of a contract year MVP which probably has helped him receive numerous hand jobs from Boras.
C Soto – All Star over McCann? WTF?
SP Santana – his goatee is just a little too perfect
SP Beckett – no real reason other than spending a year in southern Maine and becoming nauseated by the BoSox.
SP Zambrano – not a huge fan of hot heads
SP Burnett – spurned the Braves to become a damn Yankee
SP Halladay – he’s the new enemy
RP Joba – awesome! He played catch with his dad when he was a kid. I’ve never heard of such a thing!
Closer Lidge – too bad I bet by the all star break I’ll have to move him to the RP slot as he won’t hold the closer’s job for very long.

SS – Derek Jeter – It’s not his fault. It’s Yankee fans’ fault. I know he’s a great hitter. But every Yankee fan who tries to tell me he’s a great defensive SS makes me hate the guy even more.
LF – Johnny Damon – Shaved for the Yankees after stabbing the Sox in the back. Plus, his swing looks like he has NO idea what he’s doing.
CF – Shane Victorino – He just comes off as an arrogant douche.
RF – Jose Canseco – I had a hard time thinking of one here, to be honest. But the guy is a colossal douche and everyone knows it.
RP – Brad Lidge, K-Rod, Bob Wickman. All overrated, but only Wickman is immune to the fandom blinders by his teams.
I hate Baby Joba – if he’s so great why do the Yanks treat him like glass?
crappy Melky – He’s useless yet hyped up as so much more
Cole Hamels – I can’t stand this douche. Him & his annoying wife act like they’re gods gift to society. I also believe he’s been hyped as one of the best w/o having a truly great season to back it up.
Chris Runsma Reitsma – My all time most hated Braves player. The fact that he lied about his arm going numb & let Bobby run him out there to implode game after game still makes my blood boil!!
I hate Barry Bonds the most. I grew up near San Fran & have heard many stories of what a first rate waste of human life the guys is. He treats people like garbage period. Perfect example of what spoiling your kid could turn them into.
I can’t believe you hate Smoltz over SP’s like Wife Beater Myers & Rogah “He misremembered” Clemens.
Teams I hate
Lineup
C. Soto (Made the allstar team over BMac)
1B. Howard (He killed us last year) & Darin Erstad (I hated him since the Estrada incident)
2B. Utley (He always comes up with big hits against us)
3B. Arod (Cheater and a habitual liar)
SS. Jeter (I just love to hate Jeter) & Guzman (Kills the Braves)
LF. Soriano (The Braves normally can’t keep him in the ball park)
CF. Victorino (Kills the Braves with a smile on his face)
RF. Francoeur (for failing as a Brave)
SP. Pettite (jus don’t like him), J. Santana (Met ace, so I don’t like him) & Happ (He isn’t on Hanson’s level)
RP. Rivera (succefully closing so many Yankee games irks me), Lidge (I hate his devasting slider and mid 90’s fastball) & D. Kolb (One of the worst pitchers I ever seen pitch)
Team: Nationals, Phillies and Yankees
Random Hates: I hate ESPN for talking about the Yankees and Red Sox all of the time. I hate that the Braves only 1 championship is their 14 year divisional run. I hate that we traded Feliz & Andrus. I also hate the Vazquez deal. Was that really the best deal that Wren could get by trading Vazquez (I like the young pitcher though)? I really hate steroid users. I hate the NFL for not allowing guys to celebrate in the endzone. I’m also a big Lebron James hater (Kobe is the best)!
Love ya, Justin, but have to disagree on this J.S. point:
But he didn’t stop there, and to my knowledge, he still hasn’t stopped. He runs his mouth at every opportunity about how unfairly the Braves treated him.I live in Atlanta and I keep forgetting to cancel my JS Google alert, so from what I can tell, he has quit talking about it. Not to say he won’t talk about it again, but it’s his freedom, just like yours to hate on him for it. shrugs
Just like my freedom to continue to hate on Shane Victorino for trying to kill Heap. I guess he’s the only one I truly hate. I just generally dislike the most common guys named in the comments. I usually don’t vividly remember much about a disliked player not on my team until they’re playing my team – I just don’t want to waste my time on them.
I like this:
3B – A-Rod – As if you needed a reason.
im surprised leyritz didn’t make more lists….
He's pretty good in 'The Show'....
