Atlanta Braves Fan Confidence Poll

Every other Friday this off-season Talking Chop presents the Atlanta Braves fan confidence poll. This poll and therefore your confidence level should encompasses several areas of the team. These areas include, but are not limited to, the team’s ownership, current management, talent, minor-league system, general playing ability on the field, and of course during the off-season, how our off-season is going. The poll will stay open for 48 hours, and then the results will be posted and graphed against the previous weeks.

7, as per usual. This team could make the playoffs, but will need a few things to go right.

Me too. . .

7, leaving myself room to move up as this team will probably exceed my expectations

Yunel'ed Her? I hardly knew her!

I was at a 7 all last year, and up until the winter meetings. My lack of confidence in a lot of the moves that have been made this offseason have dropped me to a 6, where I will probably stay at least until we see how things are looking in ST.

Shouldn't Reid Gorecki get a shot in RF before that Heyward kid everybody talks about?

No confidence

I just can’t get any confidence in this front office….They continue year after year to sign these guys that are over the hill and just hope for good things……Chipper is a year older and couldnt stay healthy when he was younger so he will prob be out most of the season with a pulled little toe or something……Bobby just keeps staying on for another year after another year and has stayed way past his calling IMO…..He makes several questionable calls every single week when pulling pitchers and leaving others in too long….I was hoping after last year he would call it quits and we would get a new fresh face in the dugout…..I hope this year the Braves can turn it around but with all these old guys, I just can’t see how they can……..Although they do have several great players coming up from the minors but I don’t think it will help much this year..Sorry for the ramble and Go Braves!!!

Roll Tide Roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again, we'll address this line by line...
I just can’t get any confidence in this front office….They continue year after year to sign these guys that are over the hill and just hope for good things……

Yeah, I am upset with the FO too. All they did last year was improve the team by 10 wins while managing to keep the future stars in the organization. They obviously have no clue how to run a ball club !!!

Chipper is a year older and couldnt stay healthy when he was younger so he will prob be out most of the season with a pulled little toe or something

Chipper lead the team in games played last season, so please stop making crap up.

Bobby just keeps staying on for another year after another year and has stayed way past his calling

Yeah! I really hate that 3 year extension he just signed! Oh, wait…he is retiring after this seaon…

…..He makes several questionable calls every single week when pulling pitchers and leaving others in too long….

While I agree that Bobby makes managerial mistakes, please show me one manager that pulls his pitchers or leaves them in by making the perfect decision every time.

I love how in the same sentence you criticize for both leaving pitchers in too long and pulling them too early.

…..I hope this year the Braves can turn it around but with all these old guys, I just can’t see how they can……..

Please define “old”. To my knowledge, we only have 3 guys over 35 on the team – Lowe, Chipper and Wagner. Find one team in baseball without this same situation…The Braves average age is 28.3. The defending WS champs’ average age is 27.9. The rest of the division shapes up like this:

Mets – 28.2
Phillies – 28.9
Marlins – 25.2
Natinals – 27.2

The Braves are not an “old” team, so let’s stop pretending that they are. We have a few “old” players, but those “old” players are among the best in the game at what they do.

Sorry for the ramble and Go Braves!!!

It’s ok. And yes, GO BRAVES!!!

I don’t think old is an issue, but injury prone/injury histories are a valid concern.

by soup du jour on Jan 22, 2010 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

re old

I think what gator lover was trying to say is that all the “key” players are old…Game difference makers…etc etc. When the Charlie the Pills Mgr fills out his roster his key players are all under 30….And btw counting Saito we have 4 over 35
I know Saban sounds like a half-empty glass person but I am a realist and would tend to agree with him
The last couple of years has seen chipper’s “Lats” not hold up past June…I am wondering if modern medical could provide an answer like what was done for NFL QBs when they made flack jackets to protect their interal organs from hits from bitzing LBs…maybe he could wear a corsett ala “Lance Larue’s” garter belt…..ROFL …….(funny fridays)

I will not blame Bobby Cox ever..I am with you on this Justin C…His eye for talent and skills in Managing will never seem to deminish only the talent he is provided to guide.

Re: Bobby

We’ve had at least two free agents (Wags, Glaus) sign this off-season and cite Bobby Cox specifically as somebody they wanted to play for. I don’t think that’s just press conference boilerplate statements, either. Huddy took a bunch less money to resign with Atlanta.

So all that to say: my (consistent) vote of ‘8’ is based on a couple of things.
1. The evident desire of players to be here and work together to win.
2. The fact that the roster now reflects a slew of interchangeable pieces that can easily cover for one another — with quality.
3. The off-season signings appears to have much better upside than last year, and they were had as the first choices available – certainly not scrounging the leftovers that exist today. In terms of salaries, I see a lot of good value. No – not Holliday & Bay, but they weren’t realistically ever on the table.
4. Looking at the rest of the National League: Arizona has improved, The Nats have improved (nowhere to go but up), and the Braves are improved by being deeper. I don’t know that any other team is notably better.

Just be glad that the Mets are in our division

They just acquired Gary Matthews Jr. My confidence rises in that there are way worse GMs out there.

Now that the hot stove season is winding down, looking at what other teams in the division have done, I really think the only competition is Philly and I really think this team matches up well with them. Sure there are a few “ifs”, but every team has question marks!

Voted 6

I’ll have to wait and see what happens in Spring. I’m sorry, but just cause players want to play for him doesn’t increase my confidence in Bobby. I would want to play for him if I was a Norton quality player too. How many times did Bobby send him out there with a player on 2nd or 3rd when we needed a hit not a possible walk. I don’t even want to talk about leaving a pitcher in who was having a freaking meltdown. I can think of several losses that could have been wins. Hard to put bad decisions into a hard statistic like OPS. Sorry if I’m rather reserved on Bobby Cox managing the Braves for 1 more year, but he’s my biggest “if”. The lineup is looking pretty good and I hope to see Heyward starting on opening day and not Melky. I think Chipper will bat like his old self and put up 20+ homers, Mac will be even better. Diaz is due for a breakout year, I predict 30 homers from him. Prado will be journeyman skill at 2nd and avg. .300+. Glaus if healthy and I don’t see why not, should be back to his old stuff. I think the Braves are going to be playoff quality and may go all the way if the Bullpen holds up, just say that cause BP’s tend to be volatile and sometimes 1 or 2 pitchers just don’t live up to their promise (ie.Lidge).

Aha...

So if a batter walks, he’s failed? Good call, chief.

My point was simply why did he send Norton in when he could have recalled Julio Franco!

Because his most recent results were a sub-700 OPS in Mexico a year before?

I voted 6

Only because I can’t have the utmost confidence in a team with so many “ifs” and “question marks”.

Yes, I believe that the team can make it to the playoffs primarily because I’m a homer but I’m a realistic homer(is that even possible), I know that quite a few things have to go right for this team to make it to the playoffs.

I voted a 2...

because they won’t sign Johnny Damon. Do that, or trade for Pujols, and I’ll consider bumping up to a 4, maybe even a 6.

No.

He demands Damon and Pujols on the corners of our OF. Heyward can play center just fine.

9, same as last week

I’ll say this again.

1. I have way more confidence in our bullpen this year over the one we had last year. For some reason, whatever it may be, I think that Wagner and Saito are more dependable than Gonzalez and Soriano were last year. With Moylan/Saito/Wagner finishing off games, we have an excellent chance of winning every night.

2. Our starting rotation is still as good as it was last year. Jurrjens and Hanson, our future co-aces, are easily capable of 20 wins a year. Jurrjens probably could have reached that last year if not for our offense, he certainly pitched well enough. Derek Lowe is motivated now, more than ever, to correct the mistakes from last year. And even with his problems, he gave us 15 wins. If he can fix his issues, watch out. Tim Hudson is a former 20-game winner, and Kawakami is an excellent number back end of the rotation pitcher (his ERA was better than Lowe last year).

3. Our offense seriously wasn’t THAT bad last year. Sure, we had our droughts, but it wasn’t terrible. The addition of Troy Glaus in the cleanup spot solidifies our lineup. With a legitimate power threat in the middle of the order, it will make Chipper and McCann that much tougher to get out. I honestly believe last year was a fluke for Chipper, mainly because of the influx of players swapped into the clean-up role, there was no legitimate scare behind him (see: Andruw Jones, Mark Teixeira). And people seem to forget about the great year that Yunel Escobar had. The dude was raking after the all-star break and carried us for a couple of weeks. I seriously think he will thrive from the 6-hole and make our lineup that much deeper. Then.. there’s Jason Heyward. Hitting out of the 7th or 8th hole (I’m assuming he makes the club here), there shouldn’t be any pressure on him to carry this team. Not to mention, it’s not hard to top the production from Garret Anderson last year. If Heyward hits .270-.280 with 15 home runs, not to mention the plus defense he provides, we are upgrading that position. And then there’s still McLouth and Prado, who should be fine in the 1-2 spots. Our offense looks good on paper, let’s see how it translates over to the field.

4. The bench. Infante, Hinske, D. Ross… that’s solid. I love it.

I think we’re fine.

6 and holding...

I want to be at a 9 or 10 and maybe I just expected too much this offseason. I thought we were really gonna go for it for Bobby. I just can’t bring myself to vote any higher at this time. I spent most of last year at a 7, but I am just not sure this club with it’s current ownership is committed to winning as opposed to just “competing.” I hate hearing the word “competitive.” I don’t want other clubs to be worried about us, I want them to be trembling in fear of us! GO BRAVES! Maybe Heyward will be the second coming Pujols! I hate to apply that kind of pressure to a kid to be our savior though. It shouldn"t be neccesary. I’m just frustrated and venting I guess. I think I’ll be better if Glaus and Chipper make it out of ST intact!

I'm surprised that nobody attacked my appraisal of Bobby.

I like Mr. Cox just have a prob with his pitching decisions. I forgot to mention Yunel cause it’s pretty much a given that He’ll be awesome, defense and offense. Like I said my biggest fears are Bobby’s decisions and what might happen in the Bullpen. The BP for any team is an IF. Just one of those things, but the Braves are looking good for a playoff win. If Bobby makes some good decisions and goes by his old M.O. I think we’ll be in the World Series, at the least the Pennant.
