Why would you pull up a stat that isn’t on score-boards, so it obviously doesn’t matter?

Wow…I just found this comment on another Amazin Avenue fanpost about FYF:
So many haters. I think the guy has a lot of heart. I also believe Francoeur can one day hit 40 bombs. Don’t forget baseball is entertainment, support the team-or disappear into your angry little world. Let’s go Mets! All the more gratifying to watch all you sewer-rats try and climb on board when the Mets are in 1st come Sept.

While reading this, my eye was inexorably drawn towards the fanpost “Melky to earn 3.1 million in 2010”.
Someone on the ESPN article said “It’s official. Frank Wren is clueless.”
I just smile a little inside when I see that we got essentially Troy Glaus, Eric Hinske and Melky Cabrera for slightly more than the Mets signed Francoeur for.
Frank Wren is the man.

my tea leaves say: .268/.315/.478/.793 with 38 2B, 3 3B, 24 HR, 98 RBI.
note, however, I put little confidence in tea leaf predictions.

True, but...
the 50 or so point difference between ba and obp in both you and fandave are not in line with his career #s. Outside of 2008, the difference is generally around 30 points, which would mean you likely need to either bump up the ba or drop the obp.

dang. Good catch…I was trying to be nice to the man, but I guess I will bump up the BA to meet the OBP. Lord knows he isn’t going to start walking anytime soon!

The only way FYF is taking an extra 1 or 2 walks a week
is if those walks are around Central Park. With Katie. And he’d probably still strike out.
Shouldn't Reid Gorecki get a shot in RF before that Heyward kid everybody talks about?
Methinks you’re being very generous on the power numbers (especially the HRs). Citi is a chasm. He might hit a few more triples, but I don’t see him hitting more than 15 dingers.

Actually what else would the Mets do?
Frenchy gets traded and goes over there and does a decent job and raises his stats significantly, except his OBP, which he raised more than what he did for the Braves, just not by much. He finished with an avg. 311 OBP .338 slg% .498 for an OPS of .836 and a wOBA 0f .350 and to a lesser degree of importance a BABIP 0f .343. Pretty respectable really, not to mention 10 homers in the 2nd half. Ryan Church would still be a Brave if he had been given the chance to put up those numbers and would have been resigned before arb. The Mets were not going to let go a player that turned it around like Frenchy did for them so they signed him instead of letting it go to arbitration. Now, stop and think for a moment and try not to remember how much he pissed you all off, I would sign him for 1 year at the close to arbitration price of 5 mil. too, especially if I had the Mets fan base, the sucker brings them into the stadium. Incidentally, what pisses me off about him is in 2009 he finally got his SO’s down to less than a 100 (93) and what really pissed me off was he only had 13 gidp but, 10 of them were for the Braves. He might be bad again but something changed for him going to the Mets, I predicted he would do better when he was traded and I think he’s still going to be a free swinger but will be like Vlad not Failcoeur.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
Church didn't give HIMSELF the chance.
The dude’s never healthy enough to play. Oh, and Francoeur sucks. If you think he’ll sell more than ten tickets next year, you’re crazy.

You're missing it
see that BABIP of .343?
That’s called getting very lucky, and Frenchy will most likely not be that lucky next year. Even the Mets fans I talk to say that everything just seemed to fall for him or bleed through the infield.

Could home park contribute to a higher BABIP?...
meaning if your team has a huge OF, or poorly maintained IF, could that not boost a BABIP in that more balls might get through and the OFs have more ground to cover (or for a hitter more gaps for the ball to fall through).
I don’t see why not, although I don’t believe that’s the case with Frenchy.

A wOBA of .350 is respectable and 1 of the best sabre stats I think there is
I think wOBA is a better stat than OBP, tho Frenchy doesn’t understand it.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
I think this should be up there
with the worst signings of all time, second only to any signing made by the Cubs with the names Soriano, Zambrano, and Bradley
I’m sorry, but I think a lot of people who predicted Frenchy would be just as bad for the Mets as for the Braves are disappointed he put up respectable stats for the Mets. If he had not been traded and stayed here and put up the same 2nd half numbers I wonder what the Braves FO would offer him. I can understand the Braves fans disliking him getting better for the enemy, what I don’t understand is the animosity towards him from the Mets fans. is a BA of .311 and OPS of .836 so bad? Look at his stats since becoming a Met, if he does the exact same thing for the whole season in 2010 he’ll have 22 HR’s with 82 runs and 90 rbi’s, to predict he won’t sustain that is possibly true, but don’t forget you predicted he would suck at the all star break and he didn’t go along with it. I predict he will sustain the change, maybe even better. I personally hope he does well, but I hope he doesn’t get any HR’s against the Braves. A player with those stats doesn’t suck, Melky Cabrera sucks for 3.1 mil. Btw don’t call his batting avg. luck then turn around and call hitting into an unassisted double play something to expect.

Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
His BB% was worse in NY. The only thing that improved for jeff was his BABIP – which resulted in his higher average.
Jeff still does not know a ball in the dirt from a ball in his face from a ball over the heart of the plate.
People like that are not worth $1M, let alone $5M – unless they can throw 100 MPH and pitch 5+ innings.

this
his BABIP will come down and he’ll probably throw up a .260/.290/.400 line next year.

He'll post the same stats ,but a little better that he did for the Mets in 09.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
Sorry
Justin, a BA is what it is,BABIP is as I read a fancy way to say he got lucky. I guess an OPS of 836 is useless and something to not pay attention to? I’m only using his stats as a Met not the whole year, yes he has a low BB% but everything else is worthless?
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
Yes. Everything else is worthless because his small sample size of ABs in a Mets lineup does not trump his 3 year trend of sucking worse and worse each year. Also, BaBIP is not a fancy way to say someone got lucky, unless their BaBIP unexplicably shot up for no reason. Jeff can’t recognize the strike zone and hits for limitted power with a high K rate and even worse BB rate – a little spike in his batting average (due to an increase in BABIP) is worthless.

My point was just that he turned it around when he went to the Mets
I know about the last 3 years, I just think he’ll sustain those numbers for 1 more year, then get signed for 3/20 and then suck, best case scenario for the Braves.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
Agreed on the best case thing. But, I don’t see how Frenchy could turn his hitting around by being more impatient. I mean, yeah, he increased his average. Great. He had a good average for a few stretches last season in Atlanta too.

In reality, he put up better numbers in 2007 than he did in 2006. Better AVG, OBP, OPS, more Hs, 2Bs, RBI and BBs. He then went really bad, tanking with a sub .650 OPS for his last year and a half with the Braves. But, clearly, there was no three year downward trend.
Also, looking at BaBIP without consideration of line drive %s and pontificating grand conclusions is equally baseless.
But Justin loves to PONTIFICATE even if Frenchy doesn't know what it means
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
True but he did get his K rate down under a 100 for the 1st time in his career
He also made contact more, I don’t understand it, leaves me wondering if Sheffield might make a good hitting coach.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
The gross number of strikeouts a player has is by definition not the "rate."
