OK so I haven't been following this blog or the Braves much lately but I decided to stop in a couple days ago and saw we had traded for Melky Cabrera. I actually had only heard of him before and never seen him play nor had cared to know what kind've player he was. Today I decided to assess Melky Cabrera.
I've read the comparisons to Failcoeur and I have to say this guy couldn't hold Jeff's jockstrap. Why are people a fan of this guy? I see NY fans coming over to TC just to get in on some Melky talk. The guy is a career .269 hitter that basically gets you 10 and 60. Do I even want this guy to hit 8th if I'm Bobby Cox? Do I keep him on as a utility guy/pinch hitter? I would GLADLY stick Matt Diaz out in right and watch him get on base at an almost .400 clip like last season rather than play MELKY CABRERA. Oh yeah and Diaz cost 200 grand less. Granted 1.4 mil isn't breaking the bank. But still. Is he a defensive stud and I'm just an idiot. Did I get too wasted last night? Am I totally in the wrong? Somebody set me straight because I know Cabrera wasn't the centerpiece of the trade but Javy was an ACE last year and the only other thing we got was prospects right? I need clarification fellow Braves fans.
[UPDATE] Everyone was focused on my gondee's? someone else's comparison of Cabrera to Francoeur but what about the comparison to Diaz? I've heard you all saying Melky is a 3rd or 4th outfielder but wouldn't you rather have Diaz in right after the way he hit last year? From what I've watched he's a decent outfielder with a solid bat. I would put Cabrera on the bench and use him situationally.
