Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 9/6

Charlotte 1, Gwinnett 4

  • W. Timmons 2-3 2B, 3B
  • J. Heyward 2-4 RBI, K, SB(1)
  • C. Kimbrel 1IP 0H 0R 2BB 2K

On the season, Craig Kimbrel has 103 K and 30 hits allowed in only 60 innings of work. The flip side to that coin is he has 45 BB in that same span. If he can somehow harness his control he is going to be dominant. But those walks will catch up to him in the Show. Also of note is that Jason Heyward has 10 SB this year and has only been caught once. He isn't a speed demon, but his baseball intelligence extends to all facets of his game.

Star-divide

Mississippi 0, Carolina 1
  • C. Johnson 1-4 2K
  • E. Osuna 7IP 6H 1R 1BB 2K

Edgar Osuna threw a gem in this one but the Mississippi offense was nowhere ot be found against Jerry Gil (of the 7.98 ERA). Osuna is yet another solid arm that we must count in our pitching depth. Right now, Mississippi has a lot of interesting players to me with Osuna, Diamond, Cofield, Gearrin, Gunderson, Ortegano, Mejia, T. Jones, Cabrera and Rodriguez.. Those are all guys who I think have decent potential but get overlooked a lot. (Also this team is loaded with LHP.)

Winston-Salem 7, Myrtle Beach 9

  • C. Miles 2-4 3B, RBI, BB
  • G. Rodriguez 2-5 2B, HR(12), 3 RBI, 2K, SB(4)
  • C. Shehan 2-4 2B, RBI

Some of you may remember that I touted Chris Shehan as my breakout candidate at the beginning of the season. Well that didn't happen in Rome, but he has been a little better in Myrtle Beach (though is peripherals don't speak well). I still have some faith in his bat, but he needs to find the power stroke he showed in college and he needs to learn the strike zone.

Rome 7, Augusta 1

  • M. Kramer 2-4 2B, HR(2), BB, K
  • S. Sime 2-4 2B, 2 RBI, BB, 2K
  • R. Delgado 6IP 5H 1R 0BB 5K

I am going to say in the end that Randall Delgado has had one the two or three best seasons out of minor league pitchers this year. Granted he had a very rough two month stretch where walks killed him, but he only walked 5 men last month and has allowed only 9 in his last 55 innings. Just for giggles here are his stats minus May and July (where he had an ERA over 6.00):

3.10 ERA

78.1IP

71H

29BB

90K

That also comes to 10.3 K/9 and 3.33 BB/9. For a 19 year old these are pretty spectacular stats and he is a guy we can really look at going forward. Easily a top 5 prospect for us right now.

I say we call up Heyward and Kimbrel right now just for kicks and giggles

It might make our games semi-interesting and fun again.

Why does Kimbrel get so many Ks? Slider?

by blitzerlover on Sep 7, 2009 9:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Coming into the season his slider was considered to be inconsistent so I don’t know about that. He has a great fastball that has a lot of movement on it and he comes from a low angle with a lot of deception which probably helps.

how hard does he throw?

Eric Cooper = shit

by heap16 on Sep 7, 2009 12:27 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

He sits 93-95 and can get it up to 98. The thing to watch with him is his size. He is listed at 5’ 11" but i hear that is a generous listing. So he generates a lot of leverage with his arm.

by yondaime4 on Sep 7, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so would it be safe to say that he might have some arm trouble in the future because of the torque he puts on his arm?

I am not a kinesiologist, so don’t take my word as bible. I would guess he has about the same shot as everyone else. Coming from a lower arm angle than most pitchers helps him though since 3/4 and submarine don’t stress the arm as much. I’d have to see more of his delivery before I decide if he is putting stress on his elbow. Being a closer will help as well without putting as many innings on his arm.

It looks like it would hurt his shoulder, if anything.

Matt Diaz flipping rules.

...>_>

It's inconsistent mostly because he can't control it

and he can’t control it in big part because of how much movement it has. The thing has a ton of break and leads to a ton of strikeouts but also a ton of walks.

I wish there was better minor league pitch data where we could see what players do with each of their pitches. Maybe one day.

by yondaime4 on Sep 7, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah I saw this a few weeks ago. It looks like he works fast too, which is helpful for keeping hitters off balance.

by yondaime4 on Sep 7, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the stuff is exciting. That’s closer stuff if he can harness it and at least get decent control

by was385 on Sep 7, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

would I be wrong in assuming that Heyward has an excellent shot st starting 2010 as our RF?

Eric Cooper = shit

As long as TP isn’t the hitting coach I’m fine. He’s already tried to ruin Chipper and BMac and the rest of the team, and he did successfully ruin Francoeur.

it would be nice if we could convince Rudy Jaramillo to come to Atlanta

Eric Cooper = shit

by heap16 on Sep 7, 2009 11:18 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

as long as he doesn't bomb in the AFL or get injured

I think it’s pretty close to a guarantee.

by was385 on Sep 7, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Make Rudy manager.

by graf on Sep 7, 2009 11:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t be opposed to a managerial change, I just don’t think FW will cut ties with Bobby like he did with Smoltz and Glavine. Then again, I think FW has shown he has a lot of testicular fortitude when it comes to making moves that he knows will be less than popular.
