Atlanta Braves - Cincinnati Reds: (Musical) Series Preview

I'm doing a bit of a different series preview this time as the Atlanta Braves face the Cincinnati Reds for three games this weekend at Turner Field. Instead of the usual Q&A with a Reds blogger I'm going to try and encourage fans to go to the ballpark... not there are any other types of sports going on this weekend. If you go to the ballpark, here are the tunes that the Braves organist will be playing for each Reds batter as they come up to bat, via the Twitter feed of Matthew Kaminski, the Braves Organist.

  • 'Brahms Lullaby' for Paul 'Yawn'ish (Janish)
  • 'Paper Moon' for Craig Tatum (O'Neal)
  • 'The Price is Right' for Kevin (Bob) Barker
  • 'Blitzkreig Bop' for Joey 'Ramone' Votto
  • 'Ob, la, di, ob, la, da' for Corky Miller
  • 'Every Rose Has it's Thorn' for Adam Ros(e)ales - gotta love the Poison walk up song!!
  • California Dreamin' for Brandon Phillips (John and Michelle Phillips were part of the Mamas and Papas)
  • 'Miami Vice' for Drew (S)tubbs
  • 'Andy Griffith' for Jonny Gome(r) Pyle
  • 'Old McDonald Had a Farm' for Darnell McDonald - great for the kids!
  • 'My Funny (B)alentine' for Wladimir Balentien. . . It's always great to throw in some jazz!
  • I like 'Rawhide' for Scott Rolen . . . 'Rolen, Rolen, Rolen. . . Rawhide!'
  • 'Who's Johnny' for Johnny Cueto
  • In honor of Dragon-Con, perhaps I should play some sci-fi songs this weekend ;) Trogdor is in order :)

If you're on Twitter, go here and offer up any suggestions for other walk-up music he can play for the visiting team.

I love...

that Turner Field has an real live organist again. I was reading an article about him in the AJC earlier this season. It’s a game in itself to listen to what he is playing and make the connection to the player who is batting or the situation at hand. Definitely another reason to take in a game at the Ted.

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." Live organists should come back at every park

It could be a matter of pride/competition as to who had the best organist.

Absolutely. Live organists add so much to the fan experience, as opposed to recorded music.

No question in my mind about the best: Nancy Faust at old/new Comiskey Park (now US Cellular Field) in Chicago.

Mac the Knife for Dusty?

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

"Raise the Knife" by Dream Theater...

… for when Dusty comes out to make a pitching change.

Oh, Bobby.

I’m feeling good about this series. Anything less than a sweep in this series will be a disappointment because every team ahead of (or tied with) the Braves is playing a sub-.500 team this weekend.

Florida vs. Washington
Colorado vs. Arizona
San Francisco vs. Milwaukee
Philadelphia vs. Houston

Also, the Cubs are only two games behind the Braves in the WC, and they’re playing the Mets. Good luck to the Braves the rest of the month.

Here's the organist's blog:

something about Corky getting the theme from Life Goes On...

considering his ability at the plate and the star of that show, just seems wrong.
