Super Rosterbation Thought/Proposal
Ok. So everyone knows that we have a surplus of pitching for our rotation next year. We also have some holes and could use some upgrades in the power dept.
In my personal opinion i believe we should try to part with Lowe. To make him appealing we would have to eat a portion of his contract. I say look at eating around 5-7 mil meaning the other team would be responsible for 8-10 mil of his contract.
Looking at a lot of the teams that could use another starter I think that we once again match up with the Brewers.
With Hardy in their dog house we should see if we can get Hardy for Lowe. We might need to add a lower prospect but Im not to sure.
With Hardy we then shift Prado over to 1B and put Hardy at 2B. Yes I know we could use upgrades in the power department and Prado doesnt really fill that void but he does save us a few million dollars to retain Soriano at the least.
With Chip getting older and playing defense we can have him pull a Garrett Anderson and guard the line more then have Esco, Hardy and Prado shift a bit towards the left side of the diamond kinda like a reverse shift.
From there I would say put Diaz in LF full-time. McLouth in CF, Church in RF. If Schafer and Heyward are ready to contribute towards the middle of the season we could look at trading McLouth as his contract halfway through the season. Then utilize Church as a 4th OF'er.
If Freeman is ready then we utilize Prado as a utility man or see what we could get for him.
Any Thoughts from you guys?

Pretty crazy.
I dont like it. We cant just start trading away players we just got all willy-nilly.
Matt Diaz fucking rules.
Lowe still has 3 years and a lot of money on his deal left. The Brewers are a small market team that rarely adds a big long term contract. Plus Hardy was horrible this season. The power wasn’t there and the average was worse then usual. I personally think he is to big of a risk.
I agree we need to add a power bat this offseason but we’ll just have to wait and see who’s available and how much money we have to spend.
That...
doesn’t really help us at all. Probably hurts us more than helps us. If we’re trading Lowe, I’d rather get prospects, not a career .750 OPS guy.
That makes a lot worse. I think we should give brewers lowe and heyward for Braun and their best prospect
trading Heyward for Braun could be considered a lateral move (assumign Heyward is what everyone thinks he is)… i understand its projection for a commodity where we know what we got… but their best prospect is either Gamel or Escobar and they wont deal either.
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Lawrie
is fun to think about.
Mat Gamel is way too cool for double consonants.

If the Brewers were offering Braun straight up for Heyward, how could you reject that trade? Say Braun is currently at 90% of Heyward’s ceiling, I’d hedge my bet and take an elite, established talent over the guy whose never had an AB above AA.

i never said i wouldnt do it… i said it COULD be a considered a lateral move….and the trade was braun and their best prospect for lowe and heyward… you would do that trade?
their best prospect is no where near as good as Heyward.
if it was straight up Id probably have to do the bet… for the same reasons u suggest

With what the Brewers have on the farm, then No. IF Matt Gamel were a good defensive 3rd basemen, it would give me pause but alas he is not.
I was questioning you, just thinking aloud really.

There’s not too many guys in the league I would accept one for one for Heyward. Obviously, Pujols is one but Braun and David Wright are the only other two I would unquestioningly accept.
Perhaps Hanley, Longoria, and Justin Upton would be considered but I’d be hesitant before I eventually agreed.

We’re not going to be able to trade Lowe, barring some other team’s rotation getting killed in a motor vehicle accident. So you rosterbaters need to get that silly sh*t out of your heads with quickness.
Vasquez is our most tradeable pitching commodity, but I am by no means a fan of trading him. Jurrjens is untouchable in my opinion, as is Hanson. That leaves KK and, if we pick up his option, Hudson. There… now rosterbate until your keys are all gummed up.

I think Kawakami has more of a chance of staying in Atlanta next year then Vazquez does. Vazquez has a lot of trade value and I think if another team offered a top prospect or two for him then I doubt the Braves would hold onto him. Kawakami is a solid pitcher but he is owed a lot of money for a back end starter. I would like to have a rotation of Lowe, Hudson, Jurrjens, Hanson, and Kawakami next year.
A likely destination for Vazquez could be Tampa Bay. They have a very good minor league system or we could go the route of trying to get Crawford from them.
Expect Tampa is trying to cut out money to retain Crawford and Pena. I’m not sure that their a prime candidate to acquire Vazquez from a financial standpoint.
Wouldn’t shock me to see the Cubs jump in on this. They might lose Rich Harden via free agency and they would have a need for a mid rotation guy like Vazquez. Jake Fox is a bat they would probably be willing to deal. Perhaps Fox, Angel Guzman, and a top SS prospect like Hak-Ju Lee would be a nice offer. Fox is 27 and a hitting machine who is excelling in his first ML opportunity and could be a cheap solution at first base. Guzman has good stuff and could develop into a back of the bullpen guy. Maybe we could get another prospect in return but that would at least be a good start. It would save us money to retain a reliever and go after an OF bat.

The Cubs would be an interesting option. Not sure I would want Guzman though, he has good stuff but hasn’t put it together yet and I would like to stay away from any arm that comes out of that organization.
If Vazquez was made available there would be plenty of teams trying to get him. If we do trade him though it won’t be to the AL or NL West. The Rangers could be a possibility if they were willing to part with one of there outfielders.
Except...
the Rangers are an AL West team…

Its hard to tell who would jump into this. Pretty much any East or Central team in either league save for the Reds, Pirates, Blue Jays, Yankees, or Indians.
I’m not advocating this but Jair Jurrens for Matt Kemp would make some sense for both clubs. Trading cheap, young arms is not always a great strategy but there is a time and a place for it. Kemp is a cheap, young CF’er whose liable to go 30-30 this year. Your not going to pry Ryan Braun’s for Jurrjens but you can get impact ML talent with room for growth.

Probably not a smart trade for LA though and you can say they don’t have pitching depth and have juan pierre on the bench all you want but fact remains matt kemp>jair jurrjens. I love me some jurrjens but kemp impacts the game everyday with all aspects of the game, pretty much a 5 tool player. The only negative is a high strikeout rate but he hits for average well enough, the guy’s a stud CF. I think they would do Hanson for Kemp but not Jair. I wouldn’t trade Hanson for Kemp though
by McCann's the Man on Sep 3, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Good Points
Not sure either team would do either trade we have proposed. They are both reasonable propositions. The only reason I can see the Dodgers considering that trade is because of the “win now” mode they appear to be in. Jurrjens is probably capable of pitching more innings than Hanson at this point which is something the Dodgers sorely lack. Hanson will probably be fantastic for 175 next year, whereas Jurrjens would probably be a 200+ inning guy. If Jurrjens were made available this winter, he might well have the most value of any available starter given his low salary and length of contractual rights.
For the Braves, trading Jurrjens doesn’t make sense from a financial standpoint. In a perfect world, Hudson would dominate down the stretch and bring a good return via trade.
"Four of us wolves, running around the desert together in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine..."
I think you can right off the White Sox to and probably the Cardinals. I think the Tigers could make sense also. Not sure who they would be willing to part with though. Porcello is part of their rotation now and their minor leagues aren’t very good.
The Cubs do make sense but I really don’t like their minor league system.
NO.
Frank Wren for GM of the Year.

Absolutely not. I am all for trading Lowe (if we are to trade a SP), but trading McLouth makes no sense.
I would like to see us use Lowe as a closer, since he is already under contract. I know people say “you don’t pay a closer that much”, but if it helps the team and makes us better, does it matter how much we pay him? It isn’t like we are giving him a raise or adding to our payroll. It fills a need internally, and we now have roughly 6-8 million more to spend on that power upgrade or 1B hole.

No idea. Maybe someone with pitching needs and deep pockets, but I cannot name anyone that necessarily fits that description that is a viable trade partner.

I think Lowe’s contract makes him nearly untradeable

Agreed
He’s doing about what we expected him to do. He may be slightly falling short of expectations but he has been solid. With the young guys and Kenshin’s transition to the 5 man rotation, Lowe has taken some pressure off of those guys by steadily going out and eating innings.

Trading McLouth
Only happens if Schafer and Heyward are in the Majors doing good for themselves. I said to use Diaz over McLouth for his RH Bat and the fact that McLouth most likely will have higher trade value and he also has the higher contract. Therefore we save a few million

Lowe still eats innings, we’re going to need that if Javy gets traded. Go back to a bullpen by committee. Let Soriano and Gonzo walk to free up some cash
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).
Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.
not a big fan of the research thing are you….
he has an unsustainable BABIP and a track record fo 2-3 years of being a 4 win player… so he is actually a ML player
DUH
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?
by fatazfoot on Jan 7, 2009 8:59 PM EST
People who could be interested in Javy
Assuming he would waive his NTC to the Western teams:
LAA
LAD
TEX
If not, then maybe:
CHC
HOU
MIL
Matt Diaz fucking rules.
none of those teams have anything we would want i dont htink either… the non west teams that is
does HOU have any prospects ( ilike Chris Johnson, but thats bc i know him)
CHC has pretty much no one exciting
MIL wont trade Gamel or escobar and they dont have a lot after that that would fit our needs
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?
by fatazfoot on Jan 7, 2009 8:59 PM EST
With Milwaukee, Bret Lawrie and Rickie Weeks intrigue me. I know Weeks is coming off of an injury but with Hardy/Escobar up the middle, Gamels/McGehee at the hot corner and Cameron now saying that he’ll take a pay cut to stay in MIL, I think that makes Weeks expendable.
He’s a legit 20/20 guy with at least a .340OBP. We don’t have anyone that could match his production at second base.
he’s not a 2B…he happens to field balls that are occasionally hit towards the second base area ( I stress occasionally)
Offensively he is outstanding and has a really high ceiling…I still think he needs to be moved to CF…but we’ll have to see what happens with that.
he isnt worth trading Lowe for him though…unless we get Lawrie (and I really don’t see how he fits into our roster)
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?
by fatazfoot on Jan 7, 2009 8:59 PM EST
Well I don’t have +/- handy but if we’re going by UZR (which I don’t entirely trust, but regardless) then he’s no worse at 2B than any of our internal options and is a clear upgrade offensively over Prado, KJ, Infante, et al.
As for Lawrie, he doesn’t really fit with our roster now. However he’s a young right-handed bat with obvious talent that’s able to play 2B/3B.
And I’m not saying that we should necessarily trade Lowe for them, but there’s obviously a surplus of starting pitching here and Milwaukee needs some good pitching. There’s a match. Of course some would rather us keep all of our pitching.
this is a paraphrase of a quote in relation to Lawrie
when asked about Lawrie’s defense at 2B… the scout said he is a really good hitter…the question was again asked what about his defense and the scout replied he has a good glove for a DH.
I think that pretty much fits in with the Brewers organizational philosophy of crappy pitching, no defense and good offense. But its not part of what the Braves are all about.
I don’t know what to think about Week’s in relation to his UZR… i know the scouting report has him as a pretty weak defender…if he is better than KJ I wouldn’t be shocked.
Like I said I am a fan of Weeks, despite his ridiculously low batting avg. and high K rate… he is able to get on base and has good speed and power… so he’s definately valuable. I just don’t think the parts are there for the Brewers and Braves to work out a deal
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

what about
him at 1B? has he ever played there?
by drumzalicious on Sep 4, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Lawrie… I’m not sure…
according to what I’ve heard… he wanted to play catcher… but apparently that didnt really work out. as it appears the Brewers are serious about him playing 2B, as thats what he is listed as… but I suppose he could play 1B… we wont know because i doubt the brewers will try him there until the have to, seeing as they have a couple guys who don’t have a position
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Lawrie sucks. Very overrated and has makeup issues. I would stay far, far away from him.

Vasquez has said he would like to stay in Atlanta
Its close to Puerto Rico, where he is from. Perhaps he would give us a discount. Latin Players like playing for the Braves. Vasquez is only 33 and has a lot of good pitching ahead of him.
I really like Hudson. He is a great guy and team mate, but if someone has to be traded, it should be him.
yeah…jj hardy is a minor leaguer. he was on my fantasy team for 2 weeks and made me hate him this year. If we go looking for a big bat via pitching trade, (a definite possibility) i say we holler at texas and see who they’re willing to part with. they got the farm system to get away with it
haha…oh man…imagine Ian Kinsler playing 2nd base. I’d go to sleep smiling forever.
Greg Norton has 9 hits all season, for a major league baseball team
how bout dealing vaquez and minor maybe for Halladay
then trade Chip and GA for longoria that way you have LF: Halladay Cf:mclouth or Church RF: Diaz 3B: longoria
When did Roy Halladay start playing the OF?

How about us focusing on the players we now have, and how they can be used to make our current team,
a team that can not only make it to the play offs, but capable of winning once they get there!
We have players that could be potentially better, if used or not used, in the situations they are now being used.
IMO, management decisions are costing us games. We have the players now to have a play off team, IF used correctly!
I’m ALL for rosterbating about off season trades, when the time comes…….
Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.
I mean
we could very well make due with Prado at 1B and KJ at 2B. Make Lowe the Closer and retain Hudson and call it a day
by drumzalicious on Sep 4, 2009 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions
I think our team is fine
We need a coaching overhaul similar to what the Rockies went through. Same talent, much improved team.
How about we...
Trade Kawakami for Bradley. I’m serious. We don’t need Kenshin and I don’t want to have to count on Schafer. I’ll take Milton in LF next year.
MATT DIAZ IS THE FUCKING MAN.
OK, I'll still believe...
if this was a video game sure but i wouldn’t want to deal with milton bradley in real life. His ~.400 OBP would look nice in the lineup but the problems he brings are not worth it. Besides who said anything about relying on Schafer? The OF looks to be Diaz-McLouth-Heyward barring anything unforseen
