Game 144 Recap: Mets 0, Braves 6
Wow, that kid Tommy Hanson is good. He shuts the Mets out on 3 hits through 7 innings, striking out 8. He had some help from Adam LaRoche, who made a mockery of Mets pitching by hitting 2 homeruns and 2 doubles.
Question. By keeping us hanging on like this, are the Braves being cruel to their fans?

Assuming the Rox lose (and they're down 10-2 in the eighth...)
We’re up to a 5.5% chance of making the playoffs. And even before today’s results, we were only supposed to need 91 wins to have a better than even shot at it. At this point, that means we could go 15-3 over the rest of the year. That is an .833 clip, but certainly that’s more feasible than batting 1.000 for the rest of the year.

in a word, YES.

YES
They’ve been like this all year. They go on a nice streak or take a couple of series in a row and then we start looking ahead to when we play the Reds, Nationals, Pirates, or Padres saying to ourselves " we will definitely sweep those games and be on a big time roll". And then the opposite happens and we lose the series or get swept and it brings back down to earth. This team would be tough in the playoffs with our pitching, but the hitting and bullpen has been very un-clutch this year and it will cost us a chance to go to the playoffs.

I said it the day of the Cardinals series opener
“alright, it’s time to win something like 21 out of 24 just like the Rockies did in 2007.
So far, were 4-0.

The problem with that is, including those 4 games, there’s less than 20 games left. But we’re only five away from Colorado in the loss column and they’re getting crushed by SF right now.
My only hope is the Rockies end the year in LA. I gotta think the Dodgers would do whatever they can to destroy the Rox. We play the Nats, so if were close, you never know.

I would say the vast majority of Braves fans don’t live in Alanta. I have been a Braves fan since grade school and I have never been to Turner field. The problem is I live 500+ miles away and I’m not made of money.

I can't speak for everyone else
But the Atlanta sports fan bashing is really old.
I’d like to see more justification other than attendance that gives so many of you, especially the out-of-staters, reason to keep playing this broken record.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I don't need anything more than attendance.

For those of you who don't live in ATL
I can understand why fans didn’t go to this game, There was a light rain at the start of the game and it was expected to get really ugly around the 5th so I can understand why fans didn’t go.
There were some pretty bad storms around the area for most of the day, so that could have affected the actual attendance. They didn’t really stop until about an hour or so before the game. I would have been there if i had tickets and didn’t have work to do, but i know that probably has an effect for some.
by BravesFanScout on Sep 16, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions
I was still there
And they all showed up late, naturally. But there was some big-time traffic delays in the heart of the city.
But it’s football season, school’s back in session, the weather was crap, and it’s getting cooler (for Georgians). There are a lot of underlying factors for why people aren’t coming to games as much anymore, but I’m still attending as many as I can.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Well said. Thank you.
Yet another factor…I know it may be hard to believe, but some Atlantans still have jobs. Jobs that provide food, shelter, tuition, books, etc. And unfortunately sometimes those jobs, and other life factors that rh mentioned, keep them from going to every home game. I too go to as many as I can, but sometimes it’s just plain not possible.
As an example of the weather this week in Atlanta, last night it was raining so hard in my area 15 miles north of the Ted, that it took an hour and a half for my commute. How far? 7 miles. At that rate, it would’ve taken me 3 hours just to get near the stadium, then 15 minutes to park and walk (unless some free shuttle with 20 guys came by), 10 to get a ticket, and 10 to get to my seat. Of course the game only lasted 2:27, so…yeah.
But I have to help my Dad pick up his car this afternoon (wink), so I’m getting out of work early and going to the game (and Friday, Sat. & Sun.). Annnnnnnnd cue the grousers for the “the game thread is empty; we’re the only true fans” bitchfest.

That's all well and good...
But are you suggesting that Atlanta is the only pro sports city in the nation where people have jobs? I guess the unemployment rate in Miami must be, like, 0.5%

I don't know why I'm doing this to myself, but...
Giants are leading the Rockies, 7-1, in the third inning.
I doubt it’ll mean anything, but Atlanta could pick up ground on the Rockies for the 4th consecutive day.
Anything is possible.

I live in Asheville, NC and I still make it to the Games from time to time
I go with a friend and we share expenses, I have cheap season tix. I’m so far up there I can smell the exhaust from the jets taking off from the airport. But during the week when there aren’t that many people there, we sit closer. The ushers don’t mind. As for the Braves up and down streaks this year it’s just something I’ve gotten use too. I just hope they finish above .500, which it looks pretty good that they will.

Ridiculous streaks like they go on only make you wonder why they couldn’t have put it together and won 95 or 100 games this year.

I don't wonder why.
Bobby’s managing is the reason the Braves haven’t won 95 to 100 games.

having FYF, Sucky KJ, Recovering GA, and Broken Wrist Schafer in the lineup everyday at the beginning of the season is the reason the Braves haven’t won 95-100 games.
McLouth, LaRoche and Church are vastly superior to their predecessors and the resurgent KJ and recovered Anderson make this lineup that much more dangerous.

I can think of a few games where Bobby’s “stingy management” cost us the game, His loyalty to the players is commendable, but he should have sent Frenchy down with Schafer and tried something different with KJ. Don’t even want to get into leaving pitchers in for too long, or having Norton PH in crucial situations and sending a tired Soriano in to blow Hanson’s shutout was just too much. He’s notorius for overworking the same guys in the bullpen and as we get to the end of the season it really starts to show. I also wonder why the offence is so damned streaky or why KJ goes down with an injury, spends time in AAA and comes back a hot bat. Frenchy leaves and is still hitting around .300 for the accursed Mets Mr. Pendleton.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
Really?
You think Francoeur’s suddenly hitting because he got away from Pendleton? You don’t think it’s because his BABIP is 10% higher than his career number (and right at his career high of the ’05 season?)

Rec'd
I’d rather them have a slim chance and keep it interesting, than it be like in the 70’s when they sucked so bad you didn’t ever expect a win and people had to work to give away their tickets! Should the Braves come up short and you’re disappointed, then that means you care.
I am not arguing with you~I'm telling you.

Glad to see our boys having fun out there tonight, enjoying the win. Apparently Kenshin was imitating different guys’ batting stances in the pen, getting some big laughs. Hopefully we can carry that light mood into next season and play like we’re capable of.

I just hope Bobby has seen the light
and will bat LaRoche higher in the lineup. The guy is absolutely crushing the ball right now we need to have him hitting between Diaz and McCann while chip is resting. Then after that Diaz needs to move up to the #1 Spot. so.
McLouth
Prado
Diaz
LaRoche
McCann
etc.
then
Diaz
McLouth
Chip
LaRoche
McCann
etc.
So, I'm sure it's been said somewhere already,
But Mr. Hanson now has as many wins as ESPN’s …the Phillies J.A. Happ, with 10. He has a lower ERA (2.65 to 2.77) and now only trails Happ in K’s by eleven (104 to 93) while pitching 40 fewer innings. I’d say at the very least, we have a greater than 5.5% chance of being involved in the Rookie of the Year race.

The answer to the question is YES
Especially when you think about where we could be if we’d maybe picked up one of those last two games against the fish (both of which we should have won) and NOT been swept by the reds…
It’s not hard to figure out where the Braves would be if that happened: they’d still be 5+ games out, and a huge long shot to make the playoffs.
Or Tommy's gem Soriano blew...

The Braves are a playoff calibre team so maybe they get hot
Sounds really tough to win 6 more games than the Rockies simply to catch up with them. Braves also have to worry about the Giants since they are the first beneficiary of a Rockies collapse.
If the Rockies lose tonite, and the Braves win…….the Rockies will have lost 5 straight, and the Braves will have won 6 straight.
No more bullshitting around. And I think our guys know this. We have to play to win right now. Hopefully DLowe has a good night tonight.
And that Giants/Rockies game will be on ESPN tonite after the Braves game. Sweet.
