15 lies Braves fans told themselves

It's been a rough year, and a very teasing one at that. From well below .500 to 3 GB of the Wild Card, and on our way back to .500 again. Of course there were the pessimists, like me, who didn't feel like the Braves were ready for a run anyways. Then there were the optimists, the ones who brought up our great rotation and good young bats. Where the Braves actually are, to be honest, is somewhere between those two trains of thought.

But then there were the liars, the one's who had a sense of hope beyond fathomable levels. Here's the top 15 lies they told.

Star-divide

#15. "Man Bobby needs to start using Peter Moylan more. He's just rotting there on the bench"

#14. "It's all Terry Pendleton's fault!"

#13. "At least Chipper's still hitting."

#12. "Martin Prado will never sustain hitting at the ML level."

#11. "Garett Anderson will catch that ball. Easy."

#10. "It's ok guys, Jordan Shafer will be back soon"

#9. "Oh good, Bobby Cox is going to the bullpen."

#8. "It's D LOWE TIME BABY! Hope the other team is ready to get ACED UP!"

#7. "3 game series against San Diego? How can we lose?"

#6. "Just wait til Kelly Johnson starts hitting again"

#5. "This would have never happened if Casey Kotchman were still here."

#4. "They're just building suspense for Jason Heyward's big call-up"

#3. "The FO always makes a big trade at the deadline. Expect Matt Holliday to be here soon."

#2. "Thank god we got Nate McLouth."

#1. "Greg Norton pinch-hitting, that's a good move!"

Don’t take this too seriously, and don’t get mad. I’m just trying to make people laugh.

I laughed.

Some are right on point, but I feel a couple aren’t lies any fan has tried to make themselves believe – #9 and #1.

I think #6 is great. And I even like Kelly!

as far as #12 goes...

.679 OPS in 191 PA in the second half. .718 OPS vs RHP on the year.

I’m not sold. He basically did what he did last year, got hot for a month and a half. He hasn’t been drawing walks or getting XBH’s since the last week of July.

He’s a very solid utility player, probably top 5 in the league. His versatility his an asset and with an aging Chipper Jones, he’s a great guy to have off the bench. But if someone values him as a starter and would give us a legit, back of the bullpen arm, I’d take it.

he is very good… but some thought hed be our svior… he has a career 800 OPS and plays below avg defense in CF. He’s valuable but he;s not a stud or anything

no rational fan thought he was a stud but they recognized a cheap, quality OF. And his true talent level is a little above an .800 OPS plus he provides this team with SB ability, something almost no one else has

im looking at the stats which point to him being below avg… in addition to pretty much all the scouting reports…. his range isn’t all that great… he makes the plays he gets to but he gets to well below avg amount of balls

evidenced by his career UZR/150 of -9.3 in CF and a range rating of -23.9 (which means he is 9 plays and 24 plays worse than avg, respectively)

It’s called objective evidence… look into it

UZR is objective?...

some guy has to go back, watch, and say, “Well he should have gotten to that one” or “He got to one he shouldn’t have”, or whatever goes into determining that crap. But yeah, it’s “objective”.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 14, 2009 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions

i think ur are drastically underestimating UZR… its certainly not 100% objective… but its more objective than a fan sitting in front of his tv and saying… wow he is a great defender.

If you think u are more talented at determining the defensive prowess of baseball player than a guy who conceivably gets paid to do it… then more power to u… but u probably need to be knocked down a peg or tow.

I didn’t say Martin Prado is a great ML 2B. I made fun of everyone who thought he was just streaking and he’s not a good hitter. He obviously can hit, though his fielding can be suspect.

I’m sorry, I have no idea how many times you check the site, and however it is it’s no problem. What I’m saying is, I really can’t remember seeing your name in any of the other threads, so what I’m seeing is someone who put up a post and is only interacting in that post, going out of the way to refute or argue with every single post from other users that disagrees with your own. You’re asking why it’s become hostile, my argument would be that this style of posting generally leads to hostility, intentional or not.
