Chipper Jones may retire if next season disappoints | AJC.com
This is why Chipper Jones may be the greatest Atlanta Braves player to ever put on the uniform.

(Yunel is still the Queen of Hearts)
Stuff like this is what makes you hope even more that he can come out and dominate next season.

I’d rather him keep playing and just play for league minimum. We could use the money to improve the club and he could remain as the team leader. I know he’s unhappy but maybe bringing in another $10 million/year hitter would help us win and in return would make it worthwhile for him.
I doubt he plays for the league minimum, and he shouldn’t. But if he wants to give back some of his salary so that the team can go get an impact bat in free agency, awesome.

Nah, no reason he should do this. I would love for him to come back producing like a 13mil player should…hell, even at a little less production since he’s my favorite player. He’s already given so much to the team in terms of restructuring his contract and such, I don’t think we could ask for anything more.

I love Chipper Jones…20 errors and all. He realizes that his lack of production throughout the season is a large factor in the Braves not being in serious contention right now, and he’s not happy about it. I fully expect him to have a a great season next year, but if he doesn’t, I also expect him to, at least, somewhat follow through with his pledge.
By somewhat, I mean restructure his contract to where he’s making a couple million, but not retiring. I don’t think he should retire until he’s tired of playing, not because he has a mediocre season. Plus, his baseball wisdom could make a huge impact on the influx of bright, young talent joining the ballclub in the near future.
It’s things like this, coupled with his amazing abilities and career, that make Chipper Jones my all-time favorite position-player.

I'd like to see him as the hitting coach
Not next year, maybe 2012 or 2013 if he doesn’t do well. I don’t know how good he’d be as a coach, but I’m sure it wouldn’t be as poor as we’ve seen the last couple of years. He might just want to go to his ranch in Texas though, when he retires. This team needs a coach that can get players out of slumps and I would like to see Chipper get a chance at it.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher

In fact, within a few years I think the four big legends of the last 20 years could serve this ballclub very well.
Chip knows average and power from both sides of the plate, also knows how to attack an at-bat and how to adjust to get out of/avoid slumps. He’d make a fine hitting coach.
Maddux, the resident baseball supergenius, needs to be coaxed out of retirement to manage and succeed Bobby. His knowledge of the game is effing uncanny, and i think if he decided to take the job and stick at it he’d eventually go down as one of the best, on top of being a fantastic pitcher.
Smoltzie I think could be a great pitching coach (though McDowell certainly hasn’t done a poor job, and I’m not advocating running out and replacing him like I do Bobby and Terry, but down the line I’d like to see him get a shot). He knows starting and closing, so he could legitimately benefit an entire staff (and yes, I know we’d still have a bullpen coach). He’s also very good at taking a little off when the innings are going smoothly and ratcheting it up to escape jams and can help convey that approach well to future young guns to prevent them from getting in trouble by trying to blow everyone away (assuming the future young guns actually listen to him- he tried to mentor Jo-Jo but Jo-Jo ignored his advice, and we all know how well THAT worked out…)
Lastly, I think Glavine could wind up as a GM one day, and I hope when that day comes the Braves will have patched up relations with him and he won’t still have a sour taste in his mouth from his departure this year. He is a former Player’s Union rep, and over the course of his career he’s worked out big and small contracts, extensions, etc. He knows the business side of the game well, and was fortunate enough (and unfortunate in a couple of cases) to have really experienced every side of it in his day, from working for the minimum to the first big contract, to leaving your original team for a more lucrative contract, to a homecoming at a discount. And he knows what it’s like, sadly, to be dicked around at the end. He always conducted his business with respect and dignity, and I believe he’d do the same as a GM and would go to extra lengths to ensure that what happened to him never happens to anyone he works with.
It’ll be interesting to see what all these guys do post-playing career, but in particular I want Maddux and Chipper as the manager and hitting coach. The sooner the better.
Just posted this to Yahoo: Chipper’s tired and frustrated, both with himself and with the situation where the Braves haven’t learned to win without him and McCann in the lineup. The front office spent last offseason straightening out the rotation; it now needs to spend this offseason bringing good offensive players here, including Chipper’s eventual replacement, because like it or not, he’s reaching the end of the line. As far as I’m concerned, he’s earned the right to take the rest of the season off.
So you're too young
to remember Hank Aaron?
Now if Chipper was man enough to move to 1B …., then maybe I’d nudge him above Eddie Matthews.
Chipper you’re awesome, can’t believe the hate that has been going on here lately towards him
