Open Thread 9/1: Braves at Marlins
Atlanta Braves at Florida Marlins, Sep 1, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
Here is an interesting stat on that crazy hittin' fool, Matt Diaz:
...he has the highest career batting average at .417 (55-for-132) of any player with at least 100 career at-bats vs. the Marlins and his .423 average (30-for-71) is the highest of any player with at least 75 plate appearances at Land Shark Stadium.
Here is what Diaz is done in August:
led the majors (min. 50 ABs) in: batting average (.404), OPS (1.148), on-base pct. (.467) and was sixth in slugging pct. (.681)
He deserves to be the NL Player of the Month for August, wouldn't you say?
Oh, and some guy named Tim Hudson is making his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery on 8/8/08. I would say that expectations are high for Tim -- we're in the middle of a playoff race after all.

It sure will be nice to see Huddy take the mound
for us tonight! Good Luck!
Go Braves!

It’s nice to be playing meaningful games in September again.
By the way, what happened to that fanshot showing Kruk on BBTN giving the Braves some love? I’m on my Blackberry and don’t see it.

Well I’ve already seen it but was gonna comment on how sure Kruk sounded with his choice. He didn’t even hesitate to mention the Braves.

Two words
Tivo.
If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.
Not really. The problem is most people usually try to lose weight by exercising more only. You have to cut back on your intake as well. Most probably use exercise as an excuse to have that cheesecake for desert or that extra slice of pizza.
"My God! Good news fans, the Braves are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact, they appear to be beating the crap out of each other."
Yeah. I remember reading about it on Yahoo. It definitely makes sense. Most people can do one or the other, but not both.
"My God! Good news fans, the Braves are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact, they appear to be beating the crap out of each other."
its tough..i usually go 5 times a week so I’m not too worried about missing tonight…but the toughest part for me is keeping up with the diet…especially since I like to go out and have a few beers a few times a week
Cockchafer
I’m assuming you don’t drink lite beer.
"My God! Good news fans, the Braves are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact, they appear to be beating the crap out of each other."
Yea, but I should have added that a few is probably more than just a few…but my diet other than alcohol remains pretty clean throughout…but I can see how easy it is to fall off the wagon…i used to be 280 lbs…i’m now 235 at 6’2"
Cockchafer
235 doesn’t sound bad, especially when compared to 280.
If you did want to drop more weight, the beer would have to go, no doubt. It’s not the alcohol, but the liquid calories that go with it. They are the worst. They are easily consumed and still leave you hungry.
"My God! Good news fans, the Braves are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact, they appear to be beating the crap out of each other."
I know all about it…I’m actually in really good shape with a lot of muscle..I used to be a linebacker…whats keeping me from being peak is the beer…but I’m not trying to be a bodybuilder or anything…225 is my optimal weight so I’m almost there
Cockchafer
Anyone care to guess whom Mr Sánchez has his only two victories against?

Ok so question. I already have an XBOX 360, but I am looking into buying a PS3 as well. I’d basically be buying it for the free internet play and the PS3 exclusive games. Is that enough to be worth it?

because Tim Hudson has been our ace for the last couple of years. You can’t throw him in the bullpen. Show him some respect and let him earn his spot
Hudson has never been our ace…Smoltz was. I have plenty of respect for him. I just think it is stupid to put a question mark in a rotation that has been the best 1-5 in the majors during the middle of a playoff chase.

Anyone expecting Tim to look anything like the ace he used to be for a while is rather mistaken. It’s gonna take him a while to get back to form, I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s midseason next year when he’s back to normal.

Whether he’s an everyday player or not, it’s pretty weird to hate on Omar after he had the big hit in the very last game. Not to mention he hit that ball hard, it happens.
I’m not hating on him…just the fact that he is in the lineup day in and day out.

I say BP as the closer. People will say that he makes too much to be a closer, but I counter that with this: he is already under contract and fills a void. we can then use the extra 8 or so million that we do not spend on a CP to sign a good 1B (maybe LaRoche again?) or absorb some salary in a trade.
I think that solution makes the most sense.

OT: Does anyone here
commute from intown atl up 400 and have an idea of how long the traffic would take from say turner field to the exit after the toll plaza around 8am?
Don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing your toughest section will be the connector. But you prob know that! Once you’re past the split, I would think it would open up. Leaving your house at 8? I’ll say 45 min.
thanks

So it's funny
All the moves over the past week got me thinking-Braves made their moves, and they were pretty much done by the July 31 deadline. They’re one of the few teams in contention that didn’t tinker at all at this past deadline.
Sign of a good front office – lack of scrambling.

CF update: After examining the results of Nate McLouth’s MRI exam today, doctors once again determined that his left hamstring is simply strained and not torn. The Braves will further discuss his status as the week progresses and determine whether he’ll continue to rehab with the big league club or in Minor League games.
With his back feeling better on Tuesday, Ryan Church gained hope that he could return to the lineup on Tuesday.

You know it's bad

It actually makes me, a Braves fan, sad about the Marlins’ attendance. I sort of want to buy tickets to Land Shark stadium just so to help fill one more seat.

heres a question i just thought of though at 12:00 am…you know how we say kj etc. is unlucky bc of his babip is so low…couldn’t norton be on a “lucky” streak of facing pitchers who just happen to be throwing more balls off the plate…ive seen multiple 4 or 5 pitch walks that he has been taking…just a rambling thought

it’s not a ridiculous theory, but there have also been several 7 and 8 pitch walks.

save situation (so 3 runs or less), reliever doesn’t blow it
