Hanson

I'm not one to read much of what ESPN puts out but Jerry Crasnick has a nice article about Tommy Hanson up.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=crasnick_jerry&id=4434913

It's a good read and also talks about some other rookies this year but mostly Hanson.  It talks some about how well he handled himself with all the hype surrounding him and what some of the other veterans have thought about him.

Ha, you should read some of the comments the Phillies fans leave there about JA Happ. Jeez, Ja Happ is just an average pitcher with that offense. But what else do you expect from Phillies fans, such classless indviduals.

He’s a middle to back of the rotation pitcher. My question is why is he just now making his major league debut he’s 26 years old.
And the classless fans thing pretty much goes for any fan of a team in the northeast. Notice how many of those people came out when the Red Sox starting winning or the Patriots got good. Talk about jumping on the bandwagon.

by jack dein on Sep 1, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to be too negative...

but Braves fans aren’t much different, not many people at games, but if we were in 1st, bet it would be filled. It’s not just northeast, it’s all sports.

you’re confusing lazy/fickle fans with dumb assholes.

by Cracker! on Sep 1, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah

Braves fans didn’t show up even when ATL made the playoffs. At least they’re consistent.

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

by Yakker on Sep 1, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be honest

I think this team could benefit from a consistent channel broadcasting our games like NESN, YES, etc…

Get our fan base back.

by drumzalicious on Sep 1, 2009 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure

The Braves had a consistent channel broadcasting their games for years and years. The SuperStation. However, even when TBS was at its peak with Skip, Don, Joe, and Ernie, the Braves routinely failed to draw sellout crowds, even for their playoff games, since those TBS fans were all across the country and not able to get to Atlanta.

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

by Yakker on Sep 1, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This isn’t really true. For most of the 1990’s the Braves were in the top 5 in attendance every single year. The decline really started to occur in the 2000’s (when we failed to get out of the NLDS year after year and ownership went through a drastic overhaul).

The problem is and always will be

Turner Field can seat upwards of 55,000-57,000 depending on whom you ask. The highest crowds this year were two consecutive days of 50,000 and 51,000 during the Mets series where Greg Maddux’s number was retired, and the All American Rejects had a free concert. The Yankees and Red Sox series still topped out in the 47,000-48,000, despite being declared sell-outs.

Unless you’re playing once a week on Sundays, it’s pretty much very difficult to get 55,000+ into a venue with regularity. They have too many seats, and not nearly enough interested fans to come and fill them.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Sep 2, 2009 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but your enormous bulk can take up, what, 4 – 5 seats? They sell them like airlines do, right?

by soup du jour on Sep 2, 2009 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They could do away with 437-431, and probably not be affected at all. Those are always the last seats to be filled, because they are the farthest away from the action. They are the last ones to see the shade arrive and are brutal on day games. The Braves could demolish that section, and put up another giant idol of some local company. Whats left? Or leave it open to get a good view of the neighborhood/war zone.

What are you talking about, I love being able to see that Kroger has a $5.99 chicken meal at a low low price, every day, and that they’re open 24 hrs a day. The skyline could ONLY become better if we could see the ABC/Package store that was used in the filming of “famous” rapper, T.I.’s ATL.

lets get real

Happ has a 2.63 ERA, how is he a back of the rotation starter? I hate the Phillies too, but that just doesn’t make much sense.

by SayHeyWerd on Sep 1, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Happ’s got a 4.83 tRA and a 4.27 FIP. He’s been severely aided by a .249 BABIP and an 86.2% LOB.

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

by Yakker on Sep 1, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t forget the philly defense. If we put a better defense behind Hanson we could shave .2-.5 runs off his era and then he’d be right there with happ

by McCann's the Man on Sep 1, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right

Think that’s part of the BABIP.

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

ERA

says very little, nowhere near enough to make you ROY

by BravesRaleigh on Sep 1, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually Happ gets a ton of help from his defense as well, I’d argue the Phils D is the reason he’s pitching so well

by McCann's the Man on Sep 1, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not so sure it'd be that different

Maybe cause we’ve been pretty bad for a while, but I still remember empy seats in the playoffs at the launching pad.

lets face it

theres defentely a lot of quality Braves fans on this site, but theres really not that many fans of the Atlanta Braves compared to other teams. At least we still have gangstas repping our hat.

Ahead of the Dodgers, Cubs, and Cardinals….yet the local fans only care about that Georgia/Georgia Tech game.

It’s too bad that the South is completely obsessed with college football. Mindless entertainment, really. Football, to me, is running up and down a field for 3 hours. There is no drama. It’s like eating turkey. Just puts me out cold. And the last 3 minutes of the game last an hour. If that’s your cup of tea, or you find that enjoyable, more power to you; but I, most certainly, do not.

Southerners are aware of the Braves, but just don’t care. If nobody is getting leveled in the game, they consider the game to be “boring.” The South thinks of the Braves as, “the team that makes it all the way and then caves.” People give up very easily in the South. They/We could learn something from Cubs fans, for God’s sake. Even if the Cubs are 12 games out in mid-September, it’s sell-out after sell-out after sell-out. But honestly, lol, Cubs fans are wasting their time. The Cubs are cursed.

So, to sum up: the majority of people in the South are idiots. Only a few of us actually know what’s up.

What? The truth hurts.

Go Braves.

A lot of it is population. If you were to draw a circle with a 50 mile radius around every stadium, then where would Atlanta rank? I’m just throwing out random guesses, but Atlanta would probably have 5 million people in that circle, whereas NY would have 25 million, LA 20 million, Chicago 15 million? Plus, a large percentage of Atlanta residents migrated there. They didn’t grow up in the area and don’t really have any attachment to the local sports teams. That’s why you see so many opposing fans (see this years Yankees, Cubs and Red Sox series) at the ballpark.

Don’t fool yourself, football is more popular in every part of the country, it’s just that the baseball zealots are more noticeable in stadiums where they are drawing from much larger population pools. Notable exceptions would be St. Louis (good) and the Marlins (bad).

by DCP916 on Sep 2, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

baseball is more important in St. Louis than anything else…and it’s not even close. The same is probably true in NY and Bos, but its closer. college football has no hold in these areas and thats part of the reason I am sure.

Oh sure. Population plays a huge part as well. I agree. But my thinking is that our attendance should be significantly higher than it is. It shouldn’t matter whether we are playing the Red Sox or the Reds. People should come out to see the BRAVOS.

LA, NYC, and Chicago actually all support 2 teams, so it’s not a fair comparison. Heck, even the SF Bay Area supports two teams, with an aggregate pop around 5m.

If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.

I don’t know if it was you, but someone made the same point a while back about football being completely mindless, and I refrained from entering the discussion because I didn’t know where to begin, but now that you’re somehow tying it all in with Southerners being idiots and “giv[ing] up very easily,” I’m going to have to call you on your B.S. Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or what?

“Like I said”………….

If football is your thing, then great. But I’m not one to jump on bandwagons. The only point I was really trying to make is that the South is obsessed with college football. Baseball, not so much. It’s not generalizing, it’s looking big picture.

Football is in no way shape or form retarded. In fact, I bet football players have a higher IQ than most baseball players.

Football is so much more complex of a game than baseball. Football is one of the most complicated sport out there!

Thanks for the article link

I missed it somehow.

God those comments are awesome. Even on the best day ESPN commenters are spectacularly stupid, but if you cross section that with the Philidelphia Sports fan sub section, you get a whole special level of asshole.

Good stuff. Makes me appreciate the level of discourse on this site.
