I wonder if this was the delay in possibly recalling Gregor Blanco. Not that he's an impact bat or anything, but he is likely a better option in center field than anything else we have.

Honestly, I would rather have Reid out there than .293 SLG%, .631 OPS-ing Blanco. Hell, I would rather have Kelly in CF than Blanco.

Blanco is and has been on the 40 man roster and thus can be recalled at will.

Perhaps

they were concerned Barton might not clear waivers (ie, someone would claim him) so they didn’t want to call-up Blanco and risk depleting too much of the Gwinnett outfield options.
