John Halama got hammered for 7 runs in 5 innings in this game, definitely his worst start so far as a Brave. I wonder if Brandon Jones was pouting for most of the year for not making the big club and now he is over it, because he has apparently found his power stroke in the last few weeks. Just in his last 10 games he has 7 of his season total 24 XBHs. I am guessing he is going to get a chance at a September call up. (He probably was anyways, but he is cinching it I believe).

Jose Ortegano has been dealing since he was promoted to Mississippi. He is 3-0 in 3 starts with 21 K in 20 IP vs only 3 BB. You really can't argue with that. He also just turned 22 years old. Can't complain about that either. I am very impressed with how much power Jason Heyward brought with him to Mississippi. He is actually homering slightly more often than he was in the Carolina League (HR/17.8AB - AA; HR/18.9AB - A).

The Pelicans got beat by some hot shot in the Pirates organization by the name of Jeff Locke. This was the best start by Cole Rohrbough in over a month and even then I wouldn't call it a rousing success. But he only allowed 1 run on 3 hits so I hope it was a confidence booster for him.
Rome - Off
I am wondering if Mike Minor will start for Rome tomorrow since he has joined the team now. I guess we will see!

Matt Crim continues an impressive start to his career. He is now 8-0 in 9 appearances. Like I said last time, his peripherals aren't mind blowing, but he has been pretty solid with a strong ground ball rate. Cory Harrilchak is now hitting .364 on the season. He isn't going to hit for a ton of power, but he will probably continue to hit for a good average (not .360, but still .300+) and get on base. Maybe a future 4th OF or a possible lead off candidate if he adds some doubles power.

I’ll take all of that… Except I don’t think the Carlyle/Acosta move is necessary. Carlyle is forgettable. At least Acosta has some potential.

I’m just wondering what else he has to prove. He’s only been the best hitter in AA since being called up… He’s not hitting Double-A like a person who still has work to improve, he’s hitting AA like someone that has no business being in Double-A. If you leave him there, you risk stagnating him. No one’s rushing him, he’s rushing everyone’s preconceived notions.

Heyward’s AA wOBA is .185 points higher than Mike Stanton’s.

outside of HRs, Stanton’s numbers are garbage compared to Heyward’s.

I’d really like a scouting report on Ortegano, at this point. All i really know about him is that he’s a soft-throwing lefty from Venezuela.
1) What’s he throw?
2) What’s his best pitch?
3) Does he project better as a starter or reliever?
4) Overhead, 3/4, or side arm delivery?
1) Fastball, Changeup, Curve
2) His changeup is his best and its a plus pitch. His fastball is 86-89 but he can get it up to 91. He does have good command of his fastball and changeup, and can throw his curve for strikes.
3) Ortegano is thin and listed at 145 lbs. He needs to add some muscle and his frame would support it. If he can gain strength, he could probably be a legit starter prospect. If not, he could be a very useful reliever, and not just a LOOGY. His changeup is good enough to get righties out. With added weight, Ortegano could pick up a few ticks on his fastball and if that happens, he’s could wind up climbing some prospect lists in a hurry.

Anybody know for sure if he’s still with the team in Gwinnett? I know he’s injured, but has he been sent home for the year, or is he still with the team at games? Not what players normally do – I’d like to know if anybody knows for sure.

Cole Miles
I don’t know how much of a prospect Cole is, but he’s turning things around in the second half at MB. He hit in the low .200s for most of the year, but he’s pulled his average up to .271, which is no small feat considering where he was. He’s hit .406 in his last 10 games. He’s a nice guy and a fun player to watch….here’s hoping he continues his success!

If you’re going with that rotation, the OLDEST guys would be Jurrjens and Hanson at 27. Minor will only be 25 and Delgado and Teheran will 23. We would have to get a veteran pitcher or two in there.

For what purpose?
Mentoring the young guys? Let’s just bring Greg Maddux in every spring, and then twice a month during the season. Millions cheaper than signing, oh, a 36 year old Aaron Harang to “anchor” the rotation. The only guy on this proposed rotation who’d be making big bucks would be JJ-Tommy should be in arbitration ( I think) and none of these others would even be arbitration eligible yet.
And that’s not saying we have to stick to the Delgado/Teheran plan-we’ve got so much pitching in the system with Medlen, Ortegano, Spruill, Cordier, DeVall, Diamond, the other Delgado, possibly Hale as a starter, Rohrbough, maybe Oberholtzer…I just don’t see why, 5 years from now, we shouldn’t have a starting rotation comprised entirely of guys from our own system.
I’m with you, but likely hood of even half of those guys working out is incredibly low. That’s why you need an insane amount of depth, so that maybe one of them will work out.

We don't need half of them
We just need 3. Maybe just 2 , since Minor is supposed to be as close to a sure thing as you get when drafting a pitcher.
Plus, the 5th guy in the rotation doesn’t have to be a stud, he just has to be good. We’re in good shape because with Hanson and JJ, we’ve got at the very least the top two spots in our rotation locked down for years. When I’m looking at 5 years from now, I’m not questioning where we’ll find 3 SPs (that’s 3 we need out of the 13 guys I mentioned, and I forgot about JJ Hoover, who some are bullish on). My questions are: 1) Who’s playing 3rd base? 2) Who’s playing second base? 3) Who’s playing left field? 4) Is Escobar still here? 5) Who’s on the bench? 6) Who’s our closer?
I’m just really confident that the Braves have enough pitching in their own system to lean on that. If the Braves are spending money in the offseason prior to 2014, let them sign a third baseman or left fielder, and save on pitching by going with the cheaper, in house options.
Gwinnett v Toledo
I live in Toledo and attended 2 of the games. I never saw Halaama top 82 on the gun and a lot of the outs he did have were of the noisey long variety. The box score doesn’t do Brandon Jones justice, the ball absolutely explodes off his bat. Barton was an absolute defensive fiasco in center Sunday night.

i mean, they were probably in a playoff race of their own, but they let him mature in the minors. There’s something about having a year in a league to get muscle memory and quick twitch muscle reactions fine tuned. Otherwise, the player rushes and, when faced with adversity, turns into simply over-swinging on balls (Andruw, anyone?). It’s a fine balance between wanting the youth in the majors and wanting him to take some lumps before they threaten an otherwise brilliant career.

Upton was brought up in August 2007, where he played 43 games for Arizona and finished the season with them. Then he played the entire 2008 season with Arizona (with the except of a 5 week stint on the DL) and finished with an .816 OPS on the year (better than McLouth, Diaz, Francouer, Schafer, Garret Anderson-every OFer except Church).
So I don’t know how they lost time, unless you believe that he wouldn’t have been injured had he stayed in the minors longer. If this team had the 20 year old Justin Upton, we’d have a much better outfield.

Pujols spent a single year in the minor leagues. He played 133 games, and ascended through every level that year. He was older than Heyward because he’d already spent a year playing JUCO, and didn’t play in the season following his draft selection. He made the team coming out of camp as a 21 year old. Given that he was a 20th round draft pick (those guys usually don’t carry high expectations) I’d say certainly, the Cardinals rushed him to the big leagues.
Heyward has played 219 games in the minors, and he’s posted comparable numbers to Albert
Albert: .314/.378.543, .920 OPS. HR every 25.8 ABs
Heyward: .323/.392/.519, .911 OPS. HR every 28.9 ABs
Pujols homered more frequently, but Heyward has played in some notorious pitchers’ parks.
So, I’m glad you brought up Pujols, because Hewyard has been putting up fairly similar production, at a younger age, over a longer sustained period. I certainly don’t think he’s going to Albert Pujos, but there’s no reason to think the kid isn’t ready for The Show.
I am pretty sure pujols was drafted out of jr college and spent maybe a season and a half in the minors. he wasn’t even supposed to make the roster but he was so impressive in ST they made him the starter. I can’t cross check that right now though
