Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/5

Gwinnett - Off

Montgomery 6, Mississippi 3

  • J. Heyward 1-4
  • F. Freeman 1-3 2B, RBI, BB
  • W. Cabrera 1-4 3B, RBI

After streaking for about 12 games Mississippi has lost 3 straight and 5 of their last 8 games. Jason Heyward played CF in this one, but don't expect him man that spot very often when he gets to Atlanta. He is a prototype RF and that is where he will stay in the long run.

Myrtle Beach @ Salem - RAIN

Savannah 4, Rome 2

  • J. Teheran 5IP 5H 4R 1BB 8K

Julio Teheran's first start in full season ball was a little hit and a little miss. He kept his control strong and had the strike out pitch working. Six of his eight strike outs were looking, and I would wager that they were on his curveball. The scouting report from his last game in the Appy League was he has picked up some depth on the pitch and has been freezing both right handed and left handed hitters with it. His only real problem was when he got hit, he got hit hard. Four of his 5 hits allowed were for extra bases (2 doubles, 2 homers). In the end I still consider this an encouraging game.

Princeton @ Danville - RAIN

GCL Phillies 4, GCL Braves 2

  • A. Odreman 2-4 K
  • A. Feliz 2-4 RBI, K

For a guy that started out so hot, Alberto Odreman has really fallen off. He had 7 of his 8 extra base hits in his first 5 games of the season. He then went on to post a .507 OPS for the month of July. Not great.

Only 3 games? No me gusta.

And WTF Heyward only going 1-4 with no walks? Your OBP of .505 is going to plummet at this rate.

And im glad you saw JT’s start as an encouraging game. When i saw those 4 XBH, i was a little discouraged.

It's his first game in A-ball

5/1/8 are really the only numbers of relevance in his line.

An 18 year old throwing strikes is a good thing to me…the decrease in hits will decrease as Teheran learns…

A man walks into a meat shoppe and goes to the counter. The cashier asks, "Thinking about buying some meat?". The man replied, "No, I'm going to buy meat, I was thinking about punanny."

he also had a wild pitch that helped load the bases in the second inning which was a rough one.

Yea

Julio and the delgado’s should get a call up though. they really have nothing to gain at that level besides experience against weaker comp. thier basically playing against the nats every time they te the line.

Julio was promoted to Rome 36 hours ago…

Delgado has been downright BAD at time in Rome this year. His ERA just dropped un 5.00 for the first time this season. Unless you mean Dimaster Delgado, who hasn’t been exactly spectacular, but he has been solid. They are 19 and 20 years old respectively. They can finish the season at Rome fine.

yeah, no reason to rush them at all.

And BTW, did we ever establish a reason Spurril was sent down to the GCL…and then pitched 6 innings? I know there were guesses and assumptions, but did we ever find out? Its not like he was doing bad.

I haven’t heard anything. Someone said it might be disciplinary, but I doubt that because the braves just outright suspend guys for disciplinary reasons. My best guess was limiting his innings, and then he pitched 6. So i give up.

i gave up too

i heard somewhere he was adding a pitch and wanted to break it in with inferior competition, which sounded good at the time, but why make the kid throw 6 whole innings? Couldnt he just throw 2 innings or even some bullpen sessions?

I think Randall has been doing well. But I agree that he doesn’t need to move anywhere.

Pete Rose was actually banned from baseball for teaching Jeff Francoeur how to play. He made up the gambling stuff to hide his shame.

Most of the K's were on his fastball

Though he was using the curveball very effectively. Two of the guys who combined for 11 TB against him are 23 and 24 years old. Every batter that reached base against him last night, save the one he hit, is at least 3 and 1/2 years older than him. I was very impressed.

Julio was doing well until he gave up his first hit in the 2nd. He then started having a few control issues, including the wild pitch. His curveball looked very impressive, especially with his fastball. Disregarding the homeruns, it was a good start for him to build upon in the future.

Anyway, here’s a link to a very low quality video of him facing Sean Ratliff, with Julio inducing a weak broken bat pop up. Enjoy.
