Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/4
Gwinnett 5, Columbus 1
- R. Gorecki 3-4 RBI, BB, SB(13)
- B. Canizares 2-5
- V. Pope 2-3 HR(2)
Holy Crap! Van Pope is almost hitting .200 for the season! He is actually hitting .312 in his last 10 games. Todd Redmond pitched his second straight good game, going 6 strong innings without giving up any runs and only allowing 2 hits. He hasn't allowed a run in his last two games.
Montgomery 5, Mississippi 1
- M. Young 1-3 HR(3), 2 BB
- J. Heyward 2-3 HBP
- E. Osuna 6IP 5H 4R 1BB 3K
I am glad to see Jason Heyward in this game after he left yesterday's opening game and didn't return for the second game. I didn't know if he was out because of injury or what. The box score says he is fine. His OPS is still just north of 1.200 in AA. Edgar Osuna posted his second straight game where he allowed 4 runs in 6 innings. I think he is going to have games where teams just get to him because of how soft he throws. If his command isn't razor sharp he is going to be hittable.
Myrtle Beach 4, Salem 1
- C. Miles 2-4 HR(4), 2 RBI, CS(3)
- G. Rodriguez 2-4 RBI, K
- R. Gress 2-4 2B,
- J. Thompson 5.2IP 7H 1R 1BB 5K
I don't know where Cody Johnson has been lately. He has not played in a game since July 29 and he isn't on the DL currently. I wonder if they pulled him to help him straighten out his swing a little. I think they did that with him last season in the second half and it really paid dividends. Also, Randy Gress is a monster.
Savannah 2, Rome 3
- A. Milligan 1-3 2B, BB, K
- L. Sumoza 1-4 2B, 3K
- B. Schlehuber 3-4 2B
- C. Culver 1-3 2B, 2 RBI
Also in this game JJ Hoover went 5+ innings and struck out 7 while allowing only 1 run. John Sickels talked about him a little today if you want to head on over there and read what he has to say. Buddy Carlyle made a rehab start as well and allowed 1 hit through 2 innings.
Princeton 0, Danville 3
- LV Ware 2-4 2 2B
- C. Harrilchak 2-4 RBI
- M. Crim 7Ip 4H 0R 1BB 3K
Ware has been a double machine in Danville (also he is 17/19 for SB) and I think he has this level mastered. Maybe it is time to send him back to Rome for a month to see if he can make the adjustment. Matt Crim is from my old stomping grounds of Charleston, SC (he was drafted out of the Citadel and I used to live a block from there) and has accomplished a fairly impressive feat so far this season. He is 7-0 in 8 appearances. The amazing this is that his stats aren't overwhelming at all. in 44 innings he has allowed 48 hits though only 7 walks to go along with 30K. The one thing he does well (and apparently a lot of our pitchers do) is he induces a lot of groundballs.
- K. Rose 1-3 3B, SB(18)
- C. Bethancourt 2-4 HR(2), 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB(5)
- J. Hanson 2-3 BB
- C. Perez 4IP 4H 3R 2BB 3K
You know, the Braves may not have a lot of depth at the top of the system, but on the whole we might have a larger supply of high ceiling guys than any other system. Heyward, Freeman, Spruill, Teheran, Bethancourt and Carlos Perez. What do they all have in common? They are all teenagers and they all have big ceilings.

You guys keep sleeping on
Robinson Lopez! This kid has just as much upside as Perez, his stuff is comparable to Teheran’s with less command.
i think the key is less command… im not saying he doesnt have a high ceiling….but until u start showing some command… u are just a hard thrower
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

His command hasn't been too horrible
This season though and this is his first professional season. He’s doing very well so far.
Anyone have a scouting report on
Randy Gress? I hear and see his name all the time, but know absolutely nothing about him…hell, I’m not even sure I know what position he plays.
If you could help it would be much appreciated.

The Reason...
Heyward left yesterday’s game due to Heat Exhaustion, had nothing to do with an injury.
And on the youth subject..
there’s a lot of spanish sounding names with really young (90s) birth years that have some very good pitching #s down in the Dominican Summer League. Hopefully some can come up like the Delgado’s and others.
hmmm
so whats going on with cody johnson right now? as well as parr ive kept tabs on him since his pelican days.
also with the addition of church who is not playing for some reason and roachy what happens to freeman does he start to get time at 3rd too now as well or does van pope still get the nod i dun think we have a decent 3b in the minors at all and wheres eric campbell too btw?
Parr is rehabbing in Gwinnett. I believe he pitched yesterday or the day before. I’m not sure why you think we need a 3B. Our current one is signed till 2011 I believe which is enough time to find a good one from somewhere… And Laroche is done after this season unless we decide to bring him back for one more year (which may not be that hard).
It might be harder then you think
This is LaRoche’s first big FA contract. He’s probably looking for a deal to set him for life, and I doubt a 1yr deal is going to do that.

come on now
to sit here and think chipper is going to keep raking and feilding with no drop-off what so ever is a bit out there. time catches us all you know he’s prolly waiting on t.pendeltons’ contract to run out to take over hitting coach duties.
I didn’t say there wouldn’t be a drop off. he’ll he is dropping off this year from the past couple of seasons, but do you really think he is going to drop off enough before then for bobby to sit him?

Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium
I am seriously considering a road trip to Montgomery (from Panama City, FL) next Friday to catch a game between the “Biscuits” (huh?) and the MS Braves. Does anyone have any inside information about this park that might be useful?
If you come Thursday rather than Friday you can get $1 beers. YAY thirsty thursdays!
The stadium is located in downtow Montgomery directly across the street from the largest and, in my opinion, nicest hotel in Alabama, The Renaissance. Tickets were pretty damn cheap. I took a date there once and spent about $40 on everything, including seats behind home plate. (David Price pitched that night,) Also, if you gonna go to Riverwalk be sure to check out the Locomotive Loft and have some ribs.
Also, if you dont know the area too well I sugest a GPS. Although the downtown area is pretty nice, there are alot of one way streets and it is very easy to get lost and find yourself smack dab in the middle of a pretty bad ghetto.

I have been through Montgomerey several times but wouldn’t claim to “know” it that well. I do have a GPS and will be using it. Thanks for the information…maybe I will just have to make it Thursday and Friday. I just seemed like to good an opportunity to see some of the young Braves, including Heyward and Freeman, to pass up on.
Cody Johnson
Cody has been rehabbing a strained obique. He played hurt for about a week and just needed to stop and heal. He may DH tonight (Wed). Interesting note: The 475+’ HR he hit in Winston-Salem that everyone has been talking about . . . he let go of his top hand because of the discomfort and hit that bomb one handed.
