Neftali Feliz's debut

Neftali Feliz made his debut for the Rangers today against the lowly A's. Yahoo was all over this, even placing a link on their front page titled "Rookie Pitcher's Incredible Velocity". Here's the article in case you missed it:

101 Reasons to enjoy Neftali Feliz

Good to see one of our former prospects doing well in his first appearance. Sadly, anytime this is discussed we'll have to hear about how big of a mistake it was to trade this kid. Oh well...best of luck to him.

Why

do you wanna make the past week any worse for us?

That wasn’t my intention. Just happy to see the kid is doing well. Sucks that we traded him away but that’s how it goes.

by MTSU11 on Aug 4, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

i know. its, just when you’re team is 2-5 in the past 7 games, its kinda hard to watch a guy you signed and developed go on to become a potential all star closer.

Now if we were 10 games ahead in the NL east, maybe it wouldnt be so tough. But when you’re 5+ games out in the playoff races, it can be hard to watch.

Feliz is only in the pen this year, he’s not a future all star closer. He will be the #3 or 4 starter next year behind Millwood, Holland, and possibly Sheets

most reports think he’ll end up as a closer…

just saying.

I think that would happen if they didn’t have such a need for SP. The only guys you can really lock into the rotation next year for them are Holland and Millwood. He could become a closer down the line a la Hughes (i know he’s setup but just go with me) if he fails as a starter

by McCann's the Man on Aug 4, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I haven’t read that for at least a year.

From the Yahoo article linked.
Feliz will be a starter long-term, and presumably a good one. But over the final two months of the 2009 season, he’ll be a member of the Rangers’ bullpen.

Watching that highlight on Sportscenter pissed me off. I wish I could punch Wren in the face really fucking hard right now.

by rocket8188 on Aug 4, 2009 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

That was Schuerholz move before he left the GM position. Wren was his assistant so I’m sure he had an opinion but that one technically isn’t on Frankie Wren’s record.

by MTSU11 on Aug 4, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Wren takes so much undeserved crap from some braves fans and i think it’s because some honestly think that he was the one to pull off this trade. The man’s been gold since taking the job

KK’s signing aside…

by pancanbra on Aug 5, 2009 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions

?

He’s a ML rookie who’s pitched very well in the majority of his starts. Get over it.

$$

He’s a $7.5M pitcher who’s on track to underperform his salary.

by Yakker on Aug 5, 2009 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you really want to play that game?

I can find about 50 pitchers who are overpaid worse and have actually, you know, hurt their team instead of making it better as Kawakami has.

by MichaelProcton on Aug 5, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

And I can find plenty of “rookie” pitchers who’ve pitched well in most of their starts.

by Yakker on Aug 5, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

actually he’s on pace to be about a 2 WAR player, which is worth 8.8-9.2M dollars on the FA market

by McCann's the Man on Aug 5, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting

Fangraphs has him at 0.8 through 110 IPs, with a value of $3.7M. If he pitches 200 IPs, that’s 1.45 wins.

Where are you getting your numbers from?

by Yakker on Aug 5, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess he’s regressed as of late then because 2-4 starts ago he was at 1.0 WAR

by McCann's the Man on Aug 5, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Its also worth mentioning

that this was done against the A’s AAAA lineup. They’re pretty pathetic right now.

by JFP on Aug 5, 2009 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Last I checked...

There ain’t no such level in professional baseball.

Have you seen the A’s or Pirates play recently? It’d be like us basically calling everyone up from Gwinnet to finish out the season. That aside, the Tiexiera trade still pisses me off.

by pancanbra on Aug 5, 2009 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m still waiting for word that he’s three years older than they think he is.

I don't know

Saw him in the flesh last night. He’s got a real baby face and definitely seems like the age they say he is.

by Yakker on Aug 5, 2009 2:01 AM EDT up reply actions

You’re probably right. I remember seeing him with the Braves in Minor League ST and he looked very young. I guess I just want something to shut up all these we never should have traded him fools.

Not sure you’ll get it, although Single A live arms rarely pan out. This one did.
