An interesting idea for a Roster Addition next year
What about this?
Well, obviously, like most here, I am excited to see that it looks like the Braves are going to have a meaningful September for the first time in a few years. With that being said, I, like many here, do not want to keep on a blind eye on next year. With being said, I thought of an intriguing addition to our team that could be a very shrewd investment.
Now, this idea is solely based on the fact that he may be nontendered, but even if he is not, maybe we can even trade for him. My idea is why not keep an eye on the Conor Jackson situation. He struggled mightily to begin the year, and has been out the rest of the way with what is known as Valley Fever. Understandably, the guy comes with a lot of risk. Do not know if this illness had anything to do with his 99 bat performance this year, but it was simply dreadful. However, if the Braves made a play of him, and this is just a blip on the radar, we could find ourselves with a very nice addition. He also could answer a lot of needs for us. He has experience in the OF and at first, so if Laroche stays, we can play him as an OF (maybe far-fetched), but if laroche leaves, he could be put at first. He also has shown he has top to middle of the order ability (nice .400 OBP, .850 OPS potential), and is a right-handed at bat.
Again, this is all subject to what the DBACKS do with him, but even if they decide not to non-tender him, I would definately consider going after him. I honestly think the guy has very good talent, this is just a lost year for him.

Doubt the Braves sign any outfielders this off-season
Heyward will be up and Church/Diaz in left with the way they’re both hitting is probably a lock. I like the idea of him at first if he comes cheap, since he should be healthy by then.
I know Heywards been great this year
but after this injury i no longer believe he will be our RF out of spring training.
Matt Diaz fucking rules.
I think Heyward will be at AAA until at least early June. There’s no reason to rush him up if he’s not ready. With any luck Schafer will rebound and be ready for CF next year that would move McLouth to LF and allow for Church and Diaz to platoon in RF, although at this point I would rather see Diaz get the job full time and see what he could do.
Jackson would be a solid addition, the only reason that the Diamondbacks might cut him loose is because he has been ill most of the year and hasn’t played well and they don’t want to pay him the minimum of $2.4 million for arbitration. He is making $3 million this year.
if Heyward’s not ready then Schafer isn’t ready either. Both need to hit a little against AAA. This is assuming Heyward doesn’t go all Albert Pujols in the AFL, which is a big assumption. No matter what. Schafer needs ABs int eh minors… he didnt get hardly any this year and a session of winter ball won’t be enough for him to be comfortable with that wrist.
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

I agree that Schafer probably isn’t ready for the majors just yet and would benefit from about 150 at bats at AAA. Before this season began everyone said that he should be fine and be a solid player and that never happened. My argument is that we obviously rushed Schafer and I don’t want to see that mistake made with Heyward because I think that he has the chance to be a great player and I don’t want to see him rushed.
i never said Schafer was ready… I said he only spnt half a season at AA there’s no way he has proven he can hit ML pitching. And I’m still saying it about Heyward

I was generalizing before the 2009 season started most people believed that Schafer would be able to learn major league pitching and weather early season struggles. I think Heyward is a better hitter than Schafer but I don’t want to see him brought up before he’s ready and have those same struggles.
The reason Schafer struggled is because he is so prone to the strikeout
Most people realized that he wasn’t going to hit for a halfway decent average, but between his defense, on-base skills, power, and speed, he was our best option. Heyward almost certainly isn’t going to struggle like Schafer because he doesn’t strike out.
Another player to think about is Milton Bradley. I know he hasn’t been great this year but the Cubs want to get rid of him and are rumored to be willing to pay most of the $21 million he’s owed. It probably wouldn’t take much to get him and he is a proven player who also switch hits.
did you really
just say the Braves should go after Milton Bradyley? Theres a better chance of me pissing purple than him coming to Atlanta. You should look up “headcase” in the dictionary; it’ll have “Bradley, Milton” listed as the main definition.
Frank Wren for GM of the Year.
I love how people on this site can only put down others ideas. This offense cannot go another year with no power. I am sick of hearing everyone say that Heyward is going to be with the team out of Spring Training because that just isn’t happening. Last year Hanson was older more developed and pitched very well in the AFL and still didn’t come up until after the season started. There is simply no reason to rush Heyward he is going to be a great player but me don’t want to ruin him.
Hanson didn't come up
because we had other decent pitching options. Who do we have for the outfield? I don’t think there’s any doubt in the FO that Heyward is capable of hitting major league pitching right away, so it makes no sense to spend millions on a guy like Bradley, when the only reason to keep Heyward down would be to save money by pushing his arb years back. The argument of no reason to rush Heyward was OK for this year, but you don’t ruin a player as polished as he is by bringing him up after he demolished AA while showing great plate discipline. So there is no reason to get Bradley, and that is ignoring any of his attitude problems.
I think the bigger argument here becomes if Heyward comes up to start the season which I still don’t think he will but if he does and McClouth plays center with Diaz and Chuch in LF then what becomes of Schafer. I still have a lot of hope that he turns into a good player. If Schafer comes up to start the season that moves McLouth to LF with Schafer in CF and Heyward in RF. That makes Diaz a bench player and probably means no more Church.
I agree that Bradley has been a disruption but he has had only one problem in Chicago and he plays for Piniela who can be tough to get along with. Plus the Cubs would be willing to pay most of his salary.
So your argument is that Schafer should get a job instead of Heyward?
Because rushing Heyward would be a risk to his development. I find that interesting because I would argue that starting Schafer is a much bigger risk to his development than starting Heyward would be to his.
The biggest issue for prospects who get called up is plate discipline and while Schafer has about twice as many AA at-bats as Heyward, it’s Heyward who has shown far more major league readiness in his time. He struck out almost a third as much as Schafer did and walked a little bit more, while showing more power.
If Heyward gives this team the best chance to win, and I don’t think there are many people that would argue that Heyward instead of Schafer in the outfield makes the Braves a weaker team, then Heyward should be starting and the rest can be figured out either by a trade or whatever. It’s not like we’re dealing with a huge contract that will have to be shed to give Heyward a shot.
Go back and look in the archives for Heward posts
there’s a post that shows Heyward in the minors compared to Pujols, Griffey, and A-Fraud in the minors, and he’s either the same or better than all 3. (with more at-bats) That’s why people are calling for him to be called up.

So
Griffey came through the minors 20 years ago, Pujols about 10 years ago and A-Rod over 10 years ago. Thats just 3 examples of players who hit minor league pitching well and then went on to be very good major league players. I’m sure theres some players who hit minor league pitching and then couldn’t hit in the majors. Heyward is only 20 years old. I think he is going to be a great player but I don’t want him to come up and struggle and then have confidence issues like Schafer did.
well i think it goes without saying that ATL has the OFs they need right now, without adding any salary onto the team. Church, Mclouth, Diaz in the OF, with BJones, kelly, or Infante as the 4th OF and a June call-up of Heyward and/or Schaefer. You have to figure that with all the salary we have wrapped up in the pitching staff and chipper, we arent going to be able to afford Bradley even if we were interested (which the Braves never would be). And yes, he’s a legit headcase.
Not as crazy as you might think

no f'ing way
I don’t care if he’s the nicest guy in the world in real life. In the baseball world, all he does is cause problems.
And… i agree with the earlier statement… a wee bit early for serious rosterbation
Heaven is a baseball field.
I like the idea
Here’s the thing, though. Conor Jackson sucks defensively at 1B. He’s actually decent in the OF, but he’s terrible at 1B. If we’re going to get a crappy defender at 1B, I’d rather us just shift Chipper to 1B and use Prado at 3rd and KJ or Infante at 2nd.
Regardless, I actually like the idea for OF. He’s a nice buy-low proposition.

Chip needs to go to 1st. He’s getting worse at 3B as time goes by, and playing 1B would allow to play a little longer in the field and not need so many days off (unlike this year, in which he’s been fairly healthy, albeit not as effective of late)
Sick
From all reports, Jackson is seriously sick. And not in a good way. In a career-threatening and serious medical condition affecting his life way.
If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.
Yes, he has Valley Fever
I’m not a doctor, but my understanding is there’s no treatment for it. Either you recover or you die. This post is only applicable if the former is true.

Right
And my point is that it probably makes sense for Jackson to demonstrate that he’s recovered before any of the rest of this even worth discussing.
Plus, with Kotchman, I think the Braves already filled their 1B, weakened-by-illness quota.
