Open Thread 8/30: Braves @ Phillies
Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies, Aug 30, 2009 8:05 PM EDT
The Braves will attempt to win the series against the Phillies and keep their playoff hopes thriving, as Jair Jurrjens faces off against Joe Blanton. Jurrjens has reeled off 3 straight quality starts, including a 7.2 inning, 1 run gem against the Padres that resulted in a no decision in his last start. Blanton has reeled off 9 straight quality starts, spanning July and August, compiling a 4-2 record over that span.
After busting out for 9 runs last night, the Atlanta offense will look for more of the same tonight, led by baseball's hottest hitter, Matt Diaz. He's 19 for his last 31, slugging .935 over that span. So, it's really true, Matt Diaz does f'n rule.

nothings wrong.
its just something about optioning position players and how they cant afford to option KJ or Gorecki now that both Church and LaRoche are hurting

Not Good.
If church keeps playing hurt it will make it worse. With McLouth ailing it looks like we are going to be stuck with Gregor Blanco during Sept.

IMO
Yunel should stay at the bottom of the lineup. He hits tons of balls on the ground that usually turn into Vidros.
although i just looked it up and he hits em kinda evenly
by drumzalicious on Aug 30, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions
NEWSFLASH
McLouth has played at an AVERAGE level with the Braves. What we need is the McLouth who played for the Pirates this year.
Personally
Wish Nate and Church were both healthy right now-our OF defense could really use a hand.
We should get Ryan Langerhans.
lol
except, I was being completely serious. Somewhere (I think it was beyond the boxscore) they were talking about how much Langerhans would add to the Braves because his defense really carries his WAR. Him instead of GA in LF would have added like 3-4 wins, I think.
Greinke retired the last 22 batters of his game today…wow.

Any feelings on his defense?
Sample size is too limited for UZR to be meaningful. I think he’s been all right-probably not good enough to make up for his bat, though.

While it is true that direct observation is better than statistical analysis alone, I can’t help but feel there is a certain arrogance behind a comment like that.

I don't need the numbers
I can just watch a guy and TELL if he doesn’t have it going right.
He knows all the baseball players so well. He’s probably a guy who watched Gary Sheffield and said “with that bat action, he’ll never be a major league hitter.”
Since SBNation is archaic and doesn't offer a delete account function
I am going to locked myself out of my account. I spend way too much time on this site. Seriously… what are we doing here? Even if the Braves win the world series, are all these wasted hours worth it? Are our lives that vapid? Peace.

Anyone else think that sounded weird from Joe?
“Ryan Church took batting practice-I watched him, and I know, and that’s why he couldn’t go.”
Almost like he’s saying he recognized that Church wouldn’t be in the line-up, and that he’s somehow responsible for not including him.
