Open Thread 8/29: Braves @ Phillies

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies, Aug 29, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

Derek Low will take the mound for Atlanta tonight and he's coming off of two less than stellar starts. His last time out he was relieved after allowing 3 runs in 5 innings, which was a major improvement over the game before where had allowed 8 runs in just 3.2 innings. But, before those 2 games, he had a streak of 7 straight quality starts, so hopefully he can return to form.

Opposing D-Low will be Philadelphia's ace and major trade aquisition, Cliff Lee. Lee has been amazing for the Phillies, racking up wins in all 5 of his starts for them to go with a tiny 0.68 ERA. Lee's dominant pitching doesn't make for a good matchup with Atlanta's sputtering offense, so the Phillies clearly have an advantage heading into the game. But, anything can happen in, as Brian McCann calls it, the high school fild that is Citzen's Bank Park.

We are not the Reds. Therefore it is impossible to win.

Damn right we’re not the Commies. But impossible to win? It all depends on where ‘Low’ induces his balls.

by eaheckman10 on Aug 29, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

I should really do this in a fan post.

but

Do NOT resign Hudson. Thats 11 mil.

Soriano makes something like 6.5 mil this year and Gonzo 3.75

Garrett is coming off the books as well, thats 2.5 mil, total of 13.5 mil open

Sign Soriano at 8 mil base salary plus incentives up to 11 mil. Gonzo 7 mil up to 10 mil.

Thats 10.5 mil extra but it would be worth it IMO.

We cant have a dynamite rotation and a crappy BP

by drumzalicious on Aug 29, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Even still

you cant have 5 #1/#2 type pitchers and a shaky end of the BP. We saw that last year. I do not trust Moylan to come close to a closer and he is the closest person to it. Also Kimbrel isnt close to ready.

That’s probably the most expensive thing we can do, between Lowe’s contract and Hudson’s option. Lowe would be paid as one of the top closers in the league…and he probably wouldn’t be one.

I’m hoping that one of Gonzo/Soriano can be retained for about 4.5-5 million per. Probably unrealistic, but it does look like there’s plenty of relief pitching available this offseason.

can’t see the field or anything, how’s the weather look?

by SuperNewb on Aug 29, 2009 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

About 10 minutes ago, they cut back to the park from the documentary. It was still pouring and Joe was saying the game would be called soon as it is obvious the field would not be playable tonight.

by fandave on Aug 29, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

In all seriousness

Matt Diaz might be the best player nobody’s ever heard of. He’s fighting Ryan Zimmerman for that honor lately.

by Bronn on Aug 29, 2009 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

i fucking hate ryan zimmerman

by SuperNewb on Aug 29, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Might I ask why?

I don’t really have a problem with the guy-he plays for a divional rival (well, kind of…) but he’s only got a .787 career OPS against Atlanta…hasn’t really done much against us that’s memorable.

by Bronn on Aug 29, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

see… i live in northern virginia, so i go to a fair amount of games at nats park…

i was there for this one:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2008_03_30_atlmlb_wasmlb_1

and a couple others where he’s done some memorable damage… and the thing that annoys me the most is the entire city thinks he’s pretty much the best hitter in the league… which is even more annoying because i don’t think he’s spent a season above .300

by SuperNewb on Aug 29, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah yes

forgot about that one. Seems like so long ago, now.

by Bronn on Aug 29, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

alright i checked… over 20 games he was .387 in 2005 and this year he’s right at .302

yeah… i guess it wouldn’t be that memorable if you weren’t there trying to beat that fake ass baseball team in their new ballpark, but it left a good dent in my ego

by SuperNewb on Aug 29, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't really think

ryan zimmerman is a “player nobody’s ever heard of”

by atl192485 on Aug 29, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

He’s very underrated, though, because he plays for Washington, and because nothing in his stats really is eye popping. But his overall line is extremely good, and his defense is superb.

by Bronn on Aug 29, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

and live in the one place where everybody has heard of him

by SuperNewb on Aug 29, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

He just got some player of the night award on BBTN.

by Bobby Cocks on Aug 29, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

He definitely deserves NL Player of the Week Honors.

by Bronn on Aug 29, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

And you could easily make a case for NL Player of the Month. The two guys with a higher OPS are Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn. The fact that they play for a non contender really hurts them.

by Bronn on Aug 29, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

If we continue to play as we have tonight, it is possible. We just need to be consistent!

Someone needs to sneak into the Philly clubhouse and clip Ryan Howard in the back of the knees before tomorrow night.

I agree, it’s going to be a good race. Just thankful the Falcons might actually be competitive in the division!
